Jewell Alden Higgs

 

Jewell Alden Higgs, 82 of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn Lucille Higgs. 

He is survived by his daughter, Pam Linkous (Danny); sons, Mike Higgs (Terrie), and John Higgs (Kelli); brother, Doug Higgs; sister, Dianne Criner; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Bentley and Pastor Bruce Hagee officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ellis Taswell Dulaney, "Jr."

 

Ellis Taswell Dulaney, “Jr.”, 81 of Floyd, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 29, 2025. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Shelby Spence Dulaney; sons, Eric Dulaney (Kari) and James Spence; sisters, Arlene Radford and Shelby Slusher (James); brother, Gary Dulaney (Drema); grandchildren, Gavin Hylton, Aubrey Dulaney, Ava Dulaney, and all others who called him “Papaw”; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor Stanley Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Rachel "Nadine" Akers

Rachel “Nadine” Boyd Phillips Akers, age 86, passed away Monday, May 26th, 2025 at her home in Radford. 

Nadine was born Feb. 23, 1939 in Loudoun County, Virginia to the late James “Colen” and Laura Franklin Boyd. In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her siblings, Harold Claude Boyd, James “Melvin” Boyd, Catherine “Darlene” Farmer and an infant sister, Josephine Belle Boyd.  

She leaves behind four daughters and their spouses: Debra and Don McAlexander, Donna and Clifford Shirah, Sharon and Tim Allen, and Connie Phillips; two grandchildren: Melissa Goodson (John), and Wayne Lucado, Jr.; three great-granddaughters: Chandra Black (Jacob), Olivia Vest (Ian), and Aleah Goodson; three great-great-grandchildren, Riley and Mackenzie Black, Noelle Vest; and ten nieces and nephews and their families.

Never judging and generous to a fault, Nadine will be missed by many. 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Sawyer officiating. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:00 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.

A special thank you to her daughter Donna for her care of Mom the last couple of years. The family would also like to thank Mary Jane Dunford, Tammy Dalton and Jade Jones for their help and support during Mom’s last couple of months. Caytlynn “Caytie” Sabrina Rupe, 27 of Floyd, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. She is preceded in death by her mother, Linnette Rupe.

She is survived by her father, Robbie Rupe; sister, Amber Rupe; loving grandparents, Michael Conner and Linda Carnell; and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved her very much.

When there is something beautiful in the world we must share it, and when we love it we must let it go.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Barbara Lucille Stuart

 

Barbara Lucille Stuart, 72 of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert & Martha Price Stuart; brothers, Thomas Wilfred Stuart, Henry Price, Hawthorne Stuart, and William Stuart; and sisters, Pearl Stuart, Cornelia Couch, and Wanda Stuart.

She is survived by her sons, Gregory Stuart (Jessica) and Thomas Stuart; grandchildren, Dylan Robert Stuart, Joshua David Stuart, Brendan Thomas Stuart, and Autumn Colleen Stuart; brother, Matthew Stuart (Debra); sisters, Virginia King (Johnny Smith), Martha Saunders, and Helen Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Marlan Morris officiating. Interment will follow in the Stuart Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Nancy Jane Blackwell Shank

 

Nancy Jane Blackwell Shank, born on January 30, 1934, in Floyd County, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on May 8, 2025. 

She was a long-time faithful member of Stonewall United Methodist Church where she taught a Sunday School class for pre-school children for several years. She loved to read God’s Word, having read through the Bible many times over the years. 

Nancy Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Miles Shank, Jr.; parents, Sherman and Eula Williams Blackwell; brothers, Robert Blackwell and Kenneth Blackwell; stepbrothers, Gene Quesenberry and Fred Quesenberry; brothers-in-law, Frank Shelor, Tommy Hall and Wilmer “W. B.” Nolen; sisters-in-law, Harriet Allen and Manila Canaday.

She is survived by sons, Joel Shank, wife Amanda, and Stewart Shank, wife Tammy; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Ileda Shelor, Louise Hall, and Mary Nolen; sisters-in-law, Patrica Blackwell and Kathy Blackwell; many nephews and nieces, including niece Iva Ferguson who was very special to her; and numerous cousins.

Nancy Jane excelled as a homemaker, seamstress and cook. She enjoyed flower gardening when she was in good health. She was a member of the homemaking and quilting clubs at Floyd for years. She won awards for some of her quilts and canned goods. 

The family is grateful for the care she received at South Roanoke Nursing Home, particularly the care given to her by aide Pam Terry. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Stonewall United Methodist-Church of the Brethren with Pastor Darren Landon and Pastor Jerry Hylton officiating. Interment will follow in the Stonewall Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Jasi Marie Meade

 

Jasi Marie Artis Meade, age 51, passed away on April 30th, 2025 after years of battling cancer.

She was a loving mother to her only child, Julia Jasi Meade (age 22) and an amazing wife to her husband, Gerald Todd Meade (age 50). She is preceded in death by her mother, Susan Marie Gullion; and father George William Artis. She is also survived by her father, Ron Gullion; step-sister, Shirley Hicks; brother Christopher Artis; sister-in-law, Krista Artis; and niece Kathryn Artis. 

She was born in Pennsylvania, but settled in Pilot, VA with her husband, where she lived the remainder of her life. Though she had many jobs throughout her life, the job she was best at was being a stay at home mom, which she did for many years. On April 1st, 2025, P. Green Dragon was officially released, a childrens’ book written by Jasi, her daughter Julia, and her mother, Susan. Jasi was dedicated to writing, but also very dedicated to her faith. She was a member of Haven's Chapel Methodist Church in Pilot, where she wrote the monthly newsletter, and volunteered at the church’s food bank for many years. Jasi was very involved with the community always, and was constantly helping others in any way she could. Through God, she was able to reach so many people, and touch so many lives. She will be dearly missed by not only her family, but her whole community. 

Janice Terry Harmon

 

Janice Terry Harmon, 86 of Willis, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arley and Geraldine Terry.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Carlton Harmon; son, Rick Harmon; sisters, Jackie Lawson (Nash), Brenda Owens (Jerry), Aleta Elvin; brother, Sheldon Terry (Marie); and numerous nieces and nephews.

James B. Vest

 

James B. Vest passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born April 13, 1949, on the family farm, on Boothe Creek Road in Copper Hill, to Morris A. and Ida Cannaday Vest who preceded him in death along with his granddaughter, Constance A. Vest; grandson, Billy Neighbors; brothers, Kyle Vest, Ralph Vest, David Vest; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Janney (Thurman) and Ruth Ingram (Elvin).  

He is survived by his loving wife, Katie Spence Vest; son, James B. “Jimmy” Vest; great-grandsons, Douglas James Vest and Aiden Hajek; brothers and sister-in-law, Paul Vest and Charles Vest (Loretta); sister and brother-in-law, Marie Thomas (Bill); along with brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arthur Spence, III (Marie) and Jimmy Spence (Janie); and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. 

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to friends and family for all the help during his illness.

Carolyn Laverne Quesenberry Webb

 

Carolyn Laverne Quesenberry Webb, 69 of Willis, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025. She was born on June 5, 1955 in Indian Valley, to Cecil and Virginia Allene Quesenberry. Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband, Rick Webb; and her parents.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Beth Cope; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Lois Quesenberry; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Luther Henley; a niece and two nephews; and numerous cousins. Carolyn is also survived by her two grandchildren, David and Nova who were the joy of her life. 

She devoted her life to being a house wife, mother, grandmother and loving daughter.

John Willis Pendrey, III, 86, of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Pendrey; children, Wayne Pendrey, John W. Pendrey, IV, Tracey Pendrey DeCowsky, and Charles Pendrey; sisters-in-law, Shirley Pargiello, and Faye Randall (Rick); nieces, Heather Matthews, and Shannon Fortenberry; nephews, Robert Knight, and John Knight; and many loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Memorial/Interment services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025 at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 5550 Bagging Plant Rd, Dublin, VA 24084, with Pastor Rick Randall officiating.

Elsie Ann Adams Cruey

Elsie Ann Adams Cruey, beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18th, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was one of ten children born to the late Melvin and Retta Adams. 

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by all of her siblings Juanita Yates, Melvin Adams, James Adams, Richard Adams, Bernice Thweatt, Beulah Branson, Margaret Hayden, Mildred Holley, and Ronnie Adams. 

Born on January 11, 1936, in the quiet town of Chilhowie, Virginia, Elsie’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, strength, compassion, and joy.

On January 12, 1957, she married the love of her life, Harry Cruey. Together, they embarked on an extraordinary journey as a military family, and Elsie embraced the life of an Army wife with grace and fortitude. From the heartland of Missouri to the sunlit shores of California, the rugged beauty of Alaska, and the charm of France, Elsie made every place feel like home. She also built meaningful roots in several communities throughout Virginia—Saltville, Marion, Prince George, Fort Lee, Fort Eustis, Fairfax, Norfolk, and Meadows of Dan—and for a short time, in Charlotte, North Carolina. In every city, every base, and every neighborhood, she created treasured memories and lasting friendships.

Elsie was a woman of many passions. She found joy in creating with her hands—designing unique jewelry, shaping beautiful ceramics, and sewing handmade clothing for her daughters with care and love stitched into every seam. She cultivated beauty in everything she touched, whether through her vibrant gardens where flowers, trees, and vegetables flourished, or through her artistic talents that brought joy to those around her.

She found delight in life’s simple pleasures: the quiet patience of fishing, the magic of a good book, and the infectious rhythms of her favorite country music. A lively spirit, Elsie loved dancing, laughing, and gathering around the table for games with family. In addition to the thrill of bingo, she especially enjoyed spirited rounds of Rummikub and Uno, always playing with a playful spark in her eye and a competitive streak that kept everyone on their toes.

But above all, her heart was most full when surrounded by her family. She is survived by her three devoted daughters and their husbands: Susan Cruey Schold and Joseph Schold, Sandra Cruey and Michael Cranston, and Sharon Cruey Stewart and David Stewart. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: David L. Stewart, Jessica Stewart, Spencer Schold, Alex Cranston, and Rachael Cranston, and her great-grandchildren: LeeAnne Stewart, Hunter Stewart, Austin Stewart, Caroline Stewart, Dallas Stewart, and Nairi Schold Murray. Each carries forward her warmth, creativity, spirit, and the deep love she so generously gave.

Elsie’s presence was bold and full of life, grounded yet adventurous. Her smile was contagious, her energy unforgettable, and her zest for life left a lasting mark on everyone she met. Her life was a testament to devotion: to her husband, her family, her home, and the many lives she touched along the way. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the gardens she planted, the jewelry she made, the stitches of every handmade dress, the laughter of a family game night, and the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Tepee Raden Turman

 

Tepee Raden Turman, 94 of Durham, NC, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lee Eanes Turman.

Tepee is survived by his son, Curtis Lee Turman; brother & sister-in-law, J.D. & Elsie Turman; sister & brother-in-law, June & Jay Staples; and many nieces, nephews and family friends.

He was a simple man who led a simple life, not fancy, no frills. He had a strong belief system of right and wrong, and to some, a gruff exterior, but to those he liked always a smile.
 
Tepee enjoyed his career of being a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for the Dept. of agriculture for the state of North Carolina. He was proud of his Military service and the accomplishments from his job. Dad was a big Nascar fan, as well as baseball. Diehard Ford fan and pulled for the Yankees, regardless of who was on the team.
 
He never forgot where he came from, and always considered the mountains home, so it's only fitting that he be laid to rest in amongst family on top of that hill. In the last few years he had started wearing bib overalls on occasion. He would recount that when he was a child, most of the men never wore suits, it was even considered appropriate for church, as long as the overalls were clean, and a clean white shirt was worn with them. I guess he considered it going back to his roots, so that's how he will be dressed for his funeral. A suit and tie would be totally out of character, because I can count on one hand the times I saw him wear one.
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Randy Sutphin officiating. Interment will follow in Turman Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of normal pall bearers, I ask that anyone that knew Dad, and had an enjoyable memory...... to carry that in their heart, and let that be the way he is remembered. The last year of his life took its toll, and he was a shell of the person that most knew. I know he would prefer memories of good times instead of sad. 

Ricky Lynn Goad

 

Ricky Lynn Goad, 60 of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents, Billy Goad & Annie Goad Slaughter; brother, Larry Goad. 

Ricky is survived by his brothers, Michael Goad (Audrey) and William Goad (Connie); nieces Frances Dalton, Julie Winkey, Brianna Goad and Jayden Goad; nephews, Shawn Shearing and Dustin Shearing; and special friend, Kim Crosby.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025 in the Laurel Branch Cemetery, with Pastor Vernon Dalton officiating.

Patsy Mae Harman East

 

Patsy Mae Harman East, 78 of Floyd, went to be with her lord and savior on Monday, April 14, 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Beulah Harman; brother, Edward Harman; and sister, Linda Eanes.

Patsy was a faithful member of Fairview Church of the Brethren. She loved old time and bluegrass music and played the upright bass for the Pine Ridge Boys and Patsy. She was Merle Haggard’s biggest fan.

She is survived by her son, Brian East; daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Ann and Chad Phillips; grandchildren, Brystal and Benjamin Phillips; and special aunt, Corine Sowers.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025 in the Topeco Cemetery with Pastor Jason Pratt officiating.

Ruth Naomi Yoder

Ruth N. Yoder, aged 90, of Floyd, Va., crossed over the river into eternity on April 12, 2025, at her home after suffering a major stroke several days earlier.

She was born August 2, 1934 in Kempsville, Va. to Eli M. and Amelia (Beachy) Yoder. On July 1, 1954, she married Eli B. Yoder with whom she shared 62 years of love, respect and devotion until he passed in 2017.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest and Robert; sisters, Annie and Grace; and three grandsons, Cameron, Michael and Gabriel.

She is survived by four sons, Merle and wife Mary, Robbie and wife Lydia, both of Gladys, Va., Steve and wife Joan, of Floyd, Va., Calvin and wife Sheila of Wakarusa, In.; and one daughter, Judy and husband David of Floyd, Va. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren and 55 great grandchildren.

“Mama” was well loved and appreciated by all for her caring and gentle ways. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at Beaver Creek Church with Pastor Leon Yoder, Pastor Milo Zehr, and Pastor Sonny Yoder officiating. Interment will follow in the Wills Ridge Mennonite Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2025 at Beaver Creek Church.

Robert William James

 

Robert William James, 70 of Willis, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2025. He is preceded in death by his father, William R. James; and brother, Steven W. James. 

He served 30 years in the United States Navy with his last position being a Sonar Technician Master Chief Petty Officer. His primary specialties were combat systems senior enlisted, journeyman level acoustic analyst, intermediate acoustic analyst, and Navy recruiter canvasser. During his time in the military, he earned many decorations, medals, and ribbons including, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Destroyer Squadron 12 Letter of Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Battle “E” Award, USCG Meritorious Unit, Commendation Operation Device, Navy Achievement Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal. 

After retirement from the Navy, he worked in a naval shipyard. When he met Tia, he was working in a small engine shop and completed his Bachelors in Psychology.   

He is survived by his wife, Tia Roddey James; son, Johnathan James (Petra); daughters, Lisa Cintron (Steven), Tonya Cunningham (Aaron), and Megan Carr (Joshua); grandchildren, Kayleigh, Emily, Remington, and Theodore James, Jaden Cintron, Kaitlyn, Landon, and Harper Cunningham, and Caleb Carr and Ellie Carr; step-mother, Winifred V. VanHuizen; step-son, Richard Damien Ellis; brother, Bradford James; sister, Debra L. Georgeson (Clayton); beloved pet, Dusty James; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the James Residence. Inurnment will be held at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Sierra Vista, AZ, at a later date.  

Vorice Kirk Varney

 

Vorice Kirk Varney, 97 of Indian Valley, VA went Home on April 10, 2025.

She was born August 4, 1927 in Martin Co., KY to Millard & Lucy Kirk. She was the last survivor of 12 siblings. As a young woman she worked in a bus station where she met the love of her life, Rudolph Varney. She spent most of her life as a Homemaker after marrying Rudy in 1948. They were married 61 years until his death in 2010. They started their married life in WV, eventually moving to Salisbury, MD and finally settling in Greensboro, NC. In 2021, Vorice moved to VA to live out her last years with oldest daughter and son-in-law, Pat & Richard Bishop.

Vorice’s lifes mission was to be a faithful, loving wife to Rudy, to raise her children to know God as their personal saviour, and to show everyone she met the love of Jesus in hopes they would follow him. She instilled in all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that a life lived for Christ was the greatest life you could live. You could find her singing daily or listening to Christian music as she went about her work, or studying and reading her Bible, her most cherished treasure. She spent several years as a cafeteria worker. She was an excellent seamstress, loved gardening, was known for her tidiness, and was famous for her Sunday dinners. For many years she volunteered as the church clerk, taught Sunday school, cleaned the church, and sang in church. She was best known for singing “her song”, The Old Ship of Zion. Church attendance was always a top priority for her and this is where she was when she had a stroke a few days before she passed away.

She is also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Misty Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Minnie & Howard Moore; sisters, Lucy, Ruth Ann and Oretha Kirk; brothers, Ted, Paul, Charles, Joe, and Bill Kirk; brothers & sisters-in-law, Forrest & Cindy Kirk and Lacy & Polly Kirk; brother-in-law, Ralph Varney; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Betty & Rex Stone, Stella & Andy Chancellor, and Homer & Lois Varney.

Her legacy lives on through her daughters & sons-in-law, Pat & Richard Bishop and Lynn & Randy Yost; nine grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren with two more on the way. Also left to cherish her memory are brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim & Polly Varney; brother-in-law, James Mahone; and sisters-in-law, Betty, Millie, Annette, and Shirley Kirk, and Peggy Varney; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank her special caregivers that made her last few months more enjoyable, Hannah Wells, Melissa Young, Crystal Black, and Mary Ellen Nissley, as well as hospice the nursing staff at Carilion New River Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Indian Valley Church of God with Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at Indian Valley Church of God. Entombment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2025 in the Westminster Gardens Cemetery, Greensboro, NC.

Daniel Hayes Way

Daniel Hayes Way, 77 of Riner, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Hayes & Bessie Jones Way; brothers, Bobby Way and Charles Way; and sisters, Betty Bailey and Mary Gunter.

He is survived by his sisters, Lilly Barlow and Phyllis Baker; several nieces and nephews;  and special friends and helpers, Mark & Sue Conner.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2025 at New Hope Church of God with Pastor T. Michael Bond and Pastor Dwayne Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Gary Wayne Crawford

 

Gary Wayne Crawford, 75 of Radford, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025. He was born in Talcott, WV, to the late Howard and Hazel Crawford. 

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Loretta Young Crawford; son, Gary Wayne Crawford, Jr. (Lori); and granddaughter, Tera Crawford. He is also survived by his extended family, Theron Lester (Cyndi), Lori Lester and Molly Carroll.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.
