Daphne Lorene Byrd Sledd

Daphne Byrd Sledd, of Riner, VA., passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2018.  She was born in Martinsville, VA.  August 5, 1937 to the late Leonard and Mary Bondurant Byrd.  She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Lane Sledd and a sister, Mildred Byrd Grindstaff.  Daphne and her husband were self- employed with Sledd Body shop.

Survivors are son, Leonard Darrell Spencer; stepson, Donivan Lane Sledd and wife Tammy; grandson, Chris Spencer and wife Laney; step grandchildren, April and Roger Linkous; five step great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is one niece, Cassandra Grindstaff Campbell (husband Gary) and great nieces Danielle White (husband Chris) and Lindsey Campbell.

She had a great love for crafting and especially the art of quilting.

At Daphne’s request, there will be no visitation.  Family and friends who wish may gather at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville, VA. at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the gravesite to celebrate and remember Daphne’s life.  Anyone wishing to make memorial contributions may consider Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 1707 Mount Carmel Road, Rock Mount, VA. 24151 or Riner Rescue Squad, PO Box 858, Riner, VA. 24149.

Christine Jeanette Light Vest

Christine Jeanette Light Vest went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 20, 2018.  She was 96 years young.  A resident of Check her whole life, Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Lee Vest, whom she married in 1946; parents Prof. Brownlow and Ardella Prillaman Light; brothers, Harris Hart, Julian Nelson, Irving Binford and Ralph Emerson Light; sisters, Corinne Martha Light McNeil and Evelyn Light Shank.

She is survived by sons, Robert Irving (Kathy), Roger Lee, Daniel Brown (Kirsten) Vest; grandchildren, Robert Irving, Jr. (Melinda), James Lee (Kristy), Paul Alfred (Scarlett), Ian Edward (fiancĂ© Olivia Goodson), Ragan Christine Vest; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Eli and Ava Leigh Vest; nieces and nephews,  Lois McNeil Basham, Louise McNeil Shank, Maynard McNeil, Sadie Shank Benn, David Shank and Leslie Light Burton as well as many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Christine loved life on the farm and spent countless hours walking the hills checking on her cows, tending to her huge gardens, canning the bounty from those gardens, enjoying the beautiful flowers she and Roger planted around the house, and watching the hummingbirds and occasional orioles that came because of the flowers.  She took great pleasure in cooking and especially loved making fried apple pies for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Darren Landon officiating with interment to follow at the Wilson Cemetery in Check.  Visitation will be Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Maberry Funeral Home.

The family would especially like to thank Carilion Clinic Hospice and Home Health for their tender care of Christine and help to our family during the past week.

Charles Francis Baur

Charles Francis Baur, 85 of Floyd, passed away Monday, August 13, 2018.  He was preceded by his wife, Kay Baur on June 24, 2018, his parents, Florence and Frank Baur and sister, Marie Shearer.

He served in the US Navy from 1952-1956, Newport, Rhode Island on USS Saipan. He was a prior member of BPOE and River Road Rescue Squad in Piscataway, NJ.  He was also a retired member of Plumbers Union Local 24.

He is survived by his son John Baur (Sue); daughters, Denise Grant (Tim), Cheryl Limbach, Wendy Amodeo (Joe);grandchildren, Christopher Baur, Michael Baur, Brian Grant, Joseph Baur, Robert Grant, Grace Amodeo.

Madeline Sweeney Shortt








Madeline Sweeney Shortt, 89 of Floyd, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 12, 2018.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Shortt, Sr., sister, Christine Moore and great-granddaughter, Caliana Rose Moody.

Madeline was a founder and lifelong member of the Little River Baptist Church.  She served her church as a choir director and also served as a Sunday school teacher.  She was a great cook and loved gospel music as well as blue grass too.  She spent her Friday nights with Hubert at the Floyd Jamboree. She will always be remembered for her sweet smile.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Shortt, Jr. and Judy, Gene Dale Shortt and Peggy, Mark Shortt; daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn Shortt, Brenda Moody and Jim; brothers, Sonny Sweeney, Elwood Sweeney; grandchildren, John James, Kim Caldwell (Paul), Tara Pagan (Gamiel), Sarah VanDyke (Justin), Chad Moody (Sara), Krissy Davis (Jason);great-grandchildren, Brandon James, Mason James, Abbie Caldwell, Leah Pagan, Logan Pagan, Isabella Moody, Jazlyn Moody, Scarlett Moody, Paxon Moody, Saber Moody, Meadow Davis, River Davis; special friend, Hubert Harman.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Little River Baptist Church with Pastor Bradley Turner officiating.  Interment to follow in the  County Line Cemetery.  Family will receive friends Friday, August 17, 2018, 2:00 pm -4:00 pm and 6:00pm-8:00 pm at Maberry Funeral Home.

Teddy Allen Quesenberry

Teddy Allen Quesenberry, 50 of Willis, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Margaret Harris Quesenberry and brother Kerby Dean Quesenberry.
He is survived by his brothers, Robin J. Quesenberry and Daniel G. Quesenberry; nephew, Dustin C. Quesenberry; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
