Wanda Marie Stuart


Wanda Marie Stuart, 68 of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020. She is preceded in death by her mother, Martha Washington Stuart; father, Robert Stuart; brothers, Henry Lee Price and Wilfred Stuart; and sister, Pearl Stuart. 

Wanda is survived by her daughter, Valerie Stuart; siblings, Hawthorne Stuart, Virginia Stuart, Cornelia Couch, William Stuart (Rosa), Helen Loretta Moore, Barbara Stuart, Martha Saunders, and Matthew Stuart (Debra); last remaining uncle, Joe Stuart; a host of nieces and nephews that were loved by Wanda as well; family friend, Mary Chapman; sidekick, Johnnie Smith; and special friend, Maurice Gordon. 

Pallbearers for the service will be Demario Smith, Donnell Smith, A.J. King, Jonathan King, Vincent King, Mandell Jones, Hawthorne Stuart, and Greg Stuart.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Leon Denson officiating. Interment will follow in the Stuart Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 – 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020 prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to LewisGale Emergency Room and doctors, Roanoke EMS, numerous caregivers and caretakers who cared so much for Wanda over the years, medical providers, clinicians, social workers, “Moms in Motion”, all those who contributed flowers, food, etc. to the service and repass, and to all of those who came to show their respects to our beloved Wanda.

Bobbie Showalter Slusher


Bobbie Showalter Slusher, 87, of Monroe, NC died on February 21, 2020 in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Mrs. Slusher was born in Iron Gate, VA on November 11, 1932. She was the daughter of Joseph Yount Showalter and Virginia Durham Showalter. She was a long-time resident of Alleghany County and Wise County, VA, operating numerous business enterprises with her late husband Paul, before moving to Monroe, NC in 1995. Mrs. Slusher served on the Virginia Small Business Advisory Board for eight years under Governors Jerry Baliles and Doug Wilder. She was an active member of Oakland Baptist Church in Monroe, NC.

Mrs. Slusher is survived by her son, Chris Slusher and his wife Annissa, stepson James Slusher and his wife Connie, stepdaughter Paula Feather and her husband Dan, stepdaughter Judy Handfield and her husband Jay, grandchildren Wyatt Slusher and Harper Slusher, special foster grandson Roman Hawkins, her brother Guy E. Showalter and his wife Wanda Moore, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Elsey officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurel Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2020 at the funeral home.

Bruce Avery Roberson


Bruce Avery Roberson, 57 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvis Hubert & Edna Roberson.

Bruce was a graduate from Floyd County High School. He was a talented artist, avid gardener, and a wonderful chef who enjoyed cooking and canning. He had a big heart, especially for working with the elderly, and greatly enjoyed working as a Certified Med. Tech at Commonwealth Senior Living. 

He is survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Leah & Luke Weber; son, Axton Carroll; grandchildren, Clay & Josie Weber; brother, Randy H. Roberson; sisters & brothers-in-law, Sharon & Bob Roseberry, Carlene Alvis, and Sheila & Rodger Kirtner; aunts, Reva Morrow and Helen Roberson; uncles, Glen Hansel Roberson and Oscar Garman, Jr.; and numerous nieces & nephews. 

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Dixie Lee Harris Whitlock Neighbours, 81 of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, William & Nora Harris; step-mother, Maude Harris; husband, Carol Neighbours; grandson, Corey Lee Newman; and brothers, Mack Harris & Joe Harris.

She is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Roy & Ina Whitlock and Dennis & Karen Whitlock; daughters & son-in-law, Gladys Whitlock and Louise & Kenny Newman; grandchildren, Tabitha Whitlock (Chris), Jerry Whitlock, Gabriel Whitlock (Lianna Koberoski), Eric Whitlock (Ashley Taylor), Devan Newman (Jodi), and Bradley Newman (Michaela Kern); great-grandchildren, Desiree Whitlock, Cheyenne Whitlock, Christopher Whitlock, Tegan Whitlock, Blendon Sathoff, and Lucas Newman; sisters-in-law, Margaret Harris and Judy Sweeney (Barry); step-sister, Shirley Oliver (David) and her extended Neighbours family. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the funeral home.

Reneda Cox Shelton


Reneda Cox Shelton, age 79, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2020. She was preceded in death by Husband, Arthur W. Shelton; Parents, Coy and Sylvia Cox; and Sister Mary Helen Bolt.

Survivors include Sons and Daughter-In-Law, Michael Shelton, David Shelton, Steve and Heather Shelton; Granddaughters, Allison Bishop Woods, Joci Shelton, Addie Shelton, and Amanda Lineberry; Brothers, Alfred Cox, Bobby Cox; and Sister Vada Sarsfield.

After growing up in Floyd County, Virginia and living near Christiansburg, Virginia, for more than 50 years, she lived the last year of her life at Commonwealth Senior Living in Christiansburg, making new friends and enjoying new and exciting experiences with her fellow residents. 

Reneda will be remembered as a remarkable wife, sister, mother and grandmother. She loved her family and always put the needs of the ones she loved above her own. She enjoyed visiting with friends, watching sports, being outside, and keeping her grandchildren as they grew. She commented often about raising three sons and then having three granddaughters, enjoying the best of both worlds. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clyde Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Troy Ervin Smith, 99 of Indian Valley, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Misouri Hill Smith; his wife, Clarice Cox Smith; and daughter-in-law, Geneva Smith.

He is survived by his sons & daughter-in-law, Ronald D. Smith, Richard & Helen Smith, and Rickie Smith; grandchildren & spouses, Raymond & Marsha Smith, Elaina & Richard Graham, and Katrina Smith;  and great-grandchildren & spouses, Brittany & Samuel Burke, Justin & Katlin Smith ,Cassidy Graham and Mason Moles. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Indian Creek Cemetery with Military Rites by Grover King Post #1115 Hillsville. Joyce Mitchell Manson



Joyce Mitchell Manson, 82 of Floyd, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas John Manson; and her son, Phillip Burton.

She is survived by her sons, Robert Burton and Harold (Jessica) Manson; and granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Manson.

As were Joyce’s wishes, her cremains will be buried in the Thomas Family Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Joseph Conroy, Sr.; sons, Kenneth Joseph Conroy, Jr. (Heather) and William Christopher Conroy (Lisa Mickey); daughter, Ashley Renee Gainey (Bobby); grandchildren, Jasmine Rose Gainey, Danielle Mickey, and Elizabeth Crump; brothers, Ralph Vest, Melvin Vest, Elvin Vest, and Robert Vest; and sister-in-law, Doris Vest.
