Donna Jean Baker


Donna Jean Baker, formerly of Carlisle, PA, passed away quickly and peacefully on April 26th. She is predeceased by her father, Wilbur Baker, Jr.  

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Baker of Carlisle, PA; son & daughter-in-law, Bryan Baker & Liz Dunn; granddaughter, Cate of Ardmore, PA; daughter & son-in-law, Beth Cate-Freeman & William Freeman of Harrisburg, PA; two brothers & sisters-in-law, Donald Baker & Cathy of Carlisle, PA; Kenneth Baker, Sr. & Nancy of Dillsburg, PA; sister & brother-in-law, Patricia Reidenbach & Thomas of Gettysburg, PA; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. 

Donna was a force from the moment she entered the world. With red hair and an independent streak, she loved adventure.  She was at her happiest surrounded by music, animals, and nature. She loved horseback riding, nature photography, traveling, and line dancing. She built her own business as a computer programmer and consultant in the 1980s – one of few women in the field at the time.  Donna spent her final years in Floyd, Virginia surrounded by friends and a community she loved. An avid music lover, she played several instruments, including the Dulcimer which she learned to play in her retirement. 

She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by so many whose lives she touched.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, May 17th at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 647 Forge Road, Carlisle, PA 17015. The Reverend Todd Christine will preside and the service will be available to stream on the web which is available at https://youtu.be/M_8G_o55kqs

Calvin Lafayette McAlexander

 

Calvin Lafayette McAlexander, 90 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2022.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Goldie Jeston Thompson McAlexander; sisters, Eloise Hall and Ethelean Largen.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elvaleen Turner McAlexander; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Nester (Bucky); son and daughter-in-law, Jason McAlexander (Jennifer); sister, Maytrus Self; grandchildren, Jennifer Nester, Travis Nester, Makenzie McAlexander, Cameron McAlexander, Elliana McAlexander; great grandchild, Landon Boyd.

Graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at the Burnette Cemetery with Pastor Howard Nester officiating. The Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home prior to processing to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Terry Wayman Burnette, 59 of Riner, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2022.

He is survived by his parents, Charles Wayman and Hilda Duncan Burnette; son and daughter-in-law, Josh Wayman Burnette (Wendy); brother and sister-in-law, Charles Allen Burnette (Rita); granddaughter, Remi Burnette; nephews and nieces, Charlie Burnette (Tabitha), Sam Burnette (Kadi), Aaron Creed (Lauran), Megan Hash (Tyrone); uncles and aunts, Larry and Dian Burnette, Loraine and Earl Reece, J.B. Goad; cousins, Kim Brown, Daryl Reece, Mike Burnette (Krista), Steve Burnette (Vanessa), Judy Cain (Don), Dale Goad, Michelle Collins (Delbert), Charlene Rudd, Brenda Goad (Darrell), Patricia Christman (Greg); extended family and friends; his special companion, Blue.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren with Pastor Marvin Wade officiating. The interment will follow in the Beaver Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Nancy Carolyn Mize, 78 of Fork Mountain, VA., passed away Monday, April 25, 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie & Mary Alice Merrimen Pickurel; husband, Lynwood Harrison Mize; brother, Doug Pickurel; sister, Patsy P. Martin.

She is survived by her sister, Jean P. Jackson; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at the Mountain View Cemetery, Ridgeway, VA with Pastor Jeff Evans officiating.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care showed to Nancy over the last six years at the Fork Mountain Rest Home.

Taylor Leigh Bedsaul, 25 of Floyd, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from an automobile accident. She is preceded in death by her father, James Gregory Bedsaul; and grandmother, Peggy Bedsaul.

She is survived by her daughter, Emma Rae King; mother, Angie Shylene Spradlin (Jeff Poff); dad, Michael Radford; grandparents, Ewell & Linda Hodges and James Bedsaul; many aunts and uncles and many cousins and close friends.

Dwayne Leslie Sowers



Dwayne Leslie Sowers, 61 of Willis, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

Dwayne was a long time employee of Volvo, an avid NASCAR fan, he enjoyed working on cars and trucks and he was well loved by the community.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Christine; parents, Leslie Cline and Larmie Lovelyn Higgs Sowers; brother, Timothy Cline Sowers.

He is survived by a host of friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Dalton officiating.

Hallie Loraine Harry Terry

 


Hallie Loraine Harry Terry, 82, of Meadows of Dan and formerly of Floyd, Virginia passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2022. She was born in Giles County, Va, on June 22, 1939. Loraine was a member of New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She worked a great many years as an assistant registrar at the Floyd County Court House.  Loraine was preceded in death by her husband, Elder Alan Terry; father, Sid Harry; mother, Amber Rose Harry; a daughter, Deborah Patterson; daughter-in-law, Mary Terry; sisters, Aretta Helvey and Jerlean Worrell; brothers, Kirkner Harry and Dewey Harry. She is survived by her brother, Eugene Harry of Rocky Mount; sister, Dorothy Ferrell of Rich Creek; two sons, Gary Edward Terry of Rocky Mount and Victor Alan Terry (wife Veronica) of Moneta; two daughters, Rhonda Terry of Floyd, and Glenda Robinette of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Stacie Yaunsem, Eric Huff, Bobby Joe Robinette, Kelly Robinette, Sean Patterson, James Patterson, Daniel Terry, and Erika Terry; and six great-grandchildren;  Funeral services for Loraine will be held Friday at 11 a.m., at New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Carl Terry, and Mark Terry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday April 14, 2022 evening from 4 – 7 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd, Va. In Lieu of Flowers, donations will be accepted or memorials may be made to the New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church c/o Tony R. Horton, 1429 Howlett Street, Hillsville, Virginia, 24343. Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd is in charge of arrangements.
