Rosemary Gathercole

Rosemary Gathercole of Lafayette, VA, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017.  She was preceded in death by her Mother, Father, two Sons, Grandson, Father-in-law, Brothers, and Sister.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Gathercole; children, Patricia Ann & Freddie Smith, Douglas & Michelle Gathercole, Kimberly Dawn Gathercole; Five grand-children; Four great-grandchildren,; two Sisters; and a Brother.
Funeral service will be held at Noon, Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Aikens officiating with interment in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.  Family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Carl Marvin Hale

Carl Marvin Hale, 59 of Copper Hill, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2017.  He was a big Nascar fan and loved his Washington Redskins. 
He is survived by his parents, Edgar and Vannie Sue Hale; daughter, Jenny Hale (Shannon); son, Daniel Belcher (Heather); granddaughter, Mariah; grandsons, Randy, Colin, and Elliott Belcher; brothers, James Hale (Tammy), Amos Hale (Kathy), David Hale; sisters, Becky Owens (Charlie), Martha Beckner (Tim).; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Charlie Spencer and Rev. Mark Spencer officiating with interment in the Restvale Cemetery.  Family will receive 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., prior to the funeral service.

Joe Roger Salmons

 
Joe Roger Salmons, 68 of Floyd, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Susie Pratt Salmons.  Joe was a kind and loving man and knowing his love for others, his family decided to honor his memory by donating his eyes that someone else would be able to see.  He never met a stranger, was ornery, fun loving and set in his ways, but if he liked you he was a good friend.
He is survived by his wife Juanita T. Salmons; son, Kenny Joe Salmons; grandsons, Matthew & Kody Salmons; sister, Janette Spangler; step-sister, Indy Mae Branscome; brother, David Salmons; special doggie “Digger”; several brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law; many friends and good neighbors.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor Stanley Hawkins officiating with interment in the Duncan Chapel Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the funeral home.

Arnold Leon Link

Arnold Leon Link, age 89, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. He was the son of the late Coy and Minerva Essie Link of Copper Hill, VA. He was married to Georgianna Conner Link for 65 years until she was laid to rest in August of 2015. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Ronald C. Combs; brothers Larry Link and Alvin Link; sisters Ernestine McElwee, Helen Cundiff, and Violet Forbes. 
He was a retired Carman with the N&W Railroad, having worked in Roanoke, Norfolk, and Bristol, VA. 
He is survived by his daughter, Melinda Link Combs; sons Wayne Link, Dwight Link (Debbie Phillips) and Terry Link, all of Bristol, TN; grandchildren Brian Combs and Angela Combs; sister-in-law Mrs. Larry (Glenna) Link; brother-in-law Arthur Conner; and many nieces and nephews. 
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd, VA, with the service immediately following. Burial will be Monday, March 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Restvale Cemetery in Copper Hill, VA.

Robert Lee Claytor




Robert “Bob” Lee Claytor, 68, of Floyd, VA departed from this life Monday afternoon, March 13, 2017 at home. 
He was born on March 16, 1948 in Floyd, VA to the late Clara Lucille Claytor and James Turner. 
Bob was educated in the Floyd County School Systems and bravely served in the Unites States Army during the Vietnam War.  He served Little River Missionary Baptist Church as a Deacon and Trustee until his death.  He enjoyed taking care of his beloved cows, going fishing, playing with his grandkids, helping those in need, and giving advice. 
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Nathaniel Claytor, Andrew Claytor, and Anthony Claytor.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Joanna Claytor; three sons, Robert McAllister, Cecil (Rose) Saunders, and Gregory Saunders; one daughter, Roschella (William) Stephens; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Tommy Claytor; two sisters, Brenda Simonson and Linda K. Claytor; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Claytor, Linda B. Claytor, and Jacqueline (Julius) Moore; four brothers-in-law, Kenneth Hampton, Marcellus (Laurice) Hampton, Emmett (Edith) Hampton, and Troy (Thelma) Hampton; as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Maberry Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Clinton Crump officiating.  Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until the hour of service. Interment to follow at Little River Cemetery.  Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the Good Samaritan Hospice nurses and staff for all their love, care and support during the illness of our loved one.

Joseph Norman Ouellette

Joseph Norman Ouellette of Salem,  passed away peacefully at home Thursday, March 9, 2017 after a long illness.  His wife Evelyn passed away in December 2014. They were married for 59 years.
Born in Amesbury, MA October 1, 1929, he was the son of Elias Ouellette and Lauria (Gendron) Dow and step son of Bill Dow.
He was predeceased by his sister Leona and brothers, Wilfred, Raymond and Robert.
He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Ouellette of Salem; son, Michael and wife Chris Ouellette of Roanoke; grandchildren, Britney Huffman (James), Logan Poff  (Joe), Josh Ouellette (Morgan), Matt Ouellette (Kara); great-grandchildren, Remington, Mason, Barrett; special friends, Jim and Arby Tyree.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem, VA.  with Raymond Christian officiating with interment at a later date.  Visitation will be held 2:00 pm to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2017 at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem, Va. Edward Evans Altizer


Edward Evans Altizer, 86 of Floyd, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Vada and Annie Altizer, and sister Betty Duncan.
He is survived by his siblings, Teddy Altizer, Bernice Akers (Russell), Tazewell Altizer, Lawrence Altizer (Marti), Phillip Altizer(Norma), Ruth Moran(James), Rosie Altizer (Gene),Thomas Altizer; special friends, Harvey and Amy Reed, Hubert Reed; several nieces and nephews.  
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Pugh officiating with interment in the White Rock Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Barbara Anne Whitaker

Barbara Anne Whitaker, 76 of Floyd, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, March 5, 2017 at her home after a lengthy illness. Barbara was born July 1, 1940 in Indianapolis, and after graduating from high school in Eminence, Indiana, she pursued a career in business working as Assistant to the Director of Nursing at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and later as Executive Secretary at Rielly Tar and Chemical.  After marrying and starting a family Barbara chose to be a full time mother to her four children.  After moving to Floyd Virginia, Barbara worked at Heritage Hall and at the Forestry Department at Virginia Tech.  Her final working years were spent at several clothing manufactures in Floyd.
Barbara’s home was always open to friends and family.  Her cooking skills were well known as well as her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A true servant of God, Barbara will be remembered always.
She is survived by her husband of  54 years, David Whitaker; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Joyce Whitaker, Josh and Ashley Whitaker, Levi and Jennifer Whitaker; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Alvin Collette; grandchildren, Kristen Whitaker, Laura Whitaker, Mary Whitaker, Raven Whitaker, Emily Whitaker, Levi Collette, Joshua Whitaker, John Whitaker, Aaron Whitaker, Jacob Whitaker, Thad Whitaker; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Nevaeh, Rielly, Zoey, Macsamus, Zanetta, Varion, Xavier; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommie and Judy Emberson, Rodney and Eleen Emberson; sister and brother—law, Mary and Jim Romminger.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating with interment in the Jacksonville Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the funeral home.

Jack Allen Hylton



August 28, 1936 – March 2, 2017
Jack Hylton went to his heavenly home on March 2, 2017.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Darlene H. Hylton and his daughter, Trina H. Minter and her husband Steve Minter; his daughter-in-law and husband, Khris and Randy Morris.  He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Justin and his wife Kayla, Jonathan, Jordan, Kayelin Hylton and Meredith Minter.  Jack had six great grandchildren, Olivia, Kiley, Brayden, Wyatt, Blaine and Liam Hylton.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferry and Odell Hylton and his two sons, Scott and Lyndon Hylton, as well as several brothers and sisters and his special cousin Wayne Hylton. 
He is survived by his brothers, Clinton Hylton and his wife Eva, Larry Hylton and his wife Renee, Jerry Hylton and his wife Karen, John Hylton and his wife Belva and Ralph Hylton and his wife Joan.  He is survived by his sisters, Linda H. Bobbitt and her husband Leonard and LaMyra Haynes and her husband David.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister in-law, Dallas and Margaret Hubbard.
Jack worked as a farmer and a surveyor.  He retired after 35 years of surveying for the Virginia Highway Department.  He was an active member of the Topeco Church of the Brethren for more than 60 years.  He loved Floyd County’s Buffalo Mountain, its people and history. 
The family will receive visitors at Maberry Funeral Home, located at 367 S. Locust St in Floyd, VA, on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from 6:00-8:00pm and again on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Topeco Church of the Brethren, located at 3460 Floyd Hwy S in Floyd, VA, from 1:00-2:00pm.  Funeral services to follow at 2:00pm with internment in the Topeco Cemetery.   Jack was a gentle soul who loved children.  In lieu of flowers,  Jack would have wanted you to contribute to the Topeco Church of the Brethren playground fund or to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
