Aretta Quesenberry Peters

 


It is with great sadness that we announce Aretta G. Peters, formerly of Floyd, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 26, 2023. Aretta was our dearly loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and she will be greatly missed by her loving family and close friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James E Peters; and her son, Alan Peters.

She is survived by her two children, Jackie Daly and David Peters; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Rev. Timothy Hale officiating.

Norma Colene Hill Martin


Norma Colene Hill Martin, 88 of Rocky Mount, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. She is preceded in death by her parents, Asa C. & Bertha J. Hollind Hill; three brothers; three sisters; one son; two daughters; and one grandson.

She was a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren since she was eight years old. She retired from Leggett Department Store after 27 years of service.

She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Goodwin and Rebecca Sell; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 in the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with Pastor Bill Hinton officiating. Interment will follow in the Copper Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until Noon prior to the service at the church.

Hubert Hubbard

 

Hubert Hubbard, 88 of Willis, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Jean Quesenberry Hubbard; son, Lane Hubbard; and sisters, Norma Jean Alderman and Wanda Hylton. 

He is survived by his son, Alan Hubbard; daughter-in-law, Sandy Hubbard; grandchildren, Johnathan & Kadesh Hubbard, Matthew Hubbard, Danielle Hubbard, Keith Hubbard, Zachary Hubbard, and Emily Hubbard; 10 great-grandchildren; brother & sister-in-law, Fred & Joyce Hubbard.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dale Belcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Shelor Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Orland Westley Phillips

 

Orland Westley Phillips, 104, of Willis, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leora Marshall Phillips; parents, Elbert and Nora Phillips; brothers, Eldon, Holly, and Delbert; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

He was a loving father to his four daughters. He was a World War II veteran and enjoyed photography and we have many photos of the birds on the feeders and the chipmunks playing on his front porch. He had the mind of an engineer and was always coming up with puzzles to be worked, and other inventions. He loved working in the woodworking shop and made many pieces of furniture. He made each of the females in the family a jewelry box.

Orland is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Reece McPeak, Jr., Mary and Roy Hodge, Nora and Roy Junior Bentley, and Paulette and Mike Gardner; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, special friends and neighbors that meant so much to him.

The family wants to thank the loving and compassionate caregivers that took such good care of him. We also want to thank Mountain Valley Hospice.

It was Orland’s wish to donate his body to science, so a celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 at New Harvest Ministries in Willis, Virginia, with Pastor Roy Junior Bentley officiating and Military Rites by the Floyd VFW Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a church or charity of your choice.

Nancy Ellen Boothe Dulaney

 

Nancy Ellen Dulaney, 88 of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 8, 2023. She was born in Floyd County and lived in Florida before moving back to Floyd. She retired from the Christiansburg Wal-Mart as a people greeter. She was member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Maurice Dulaney; parents, Willie Roscoe & Clydia Reed Boothe; and brothers, William “Scotty” Boothe and John Nelson Boothe.

Her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew no bounds.  She was the best teacher without even trying just by sharing her life and love with us.

She is survived by her children, Jack & Deborah Dulaney, West Palm Beach, FL, Rick & Joann Dulaney, Pembroke Pines, FL, Eugene Dulaney, Floyd, and Janet & Juan Khoury, Miami Springs, FL; grandchildren, Gary, Kristina, Michael, Shawn, Lauren, and Kelly; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Kenzie , Caleb, and Davidson; sisters, Nellie Lloyd and Sue & Foster Bond; brother, Shirley & Ruth Boothe.

Mom and grandma, thanks for always being there for us.  You will be in our hearts forever!

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Bonnie Louise Leonard


 

 Bonnie Louise Leonard, age 94, passed away at Skyline Manor Nursing Home, Floyd, VA on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Rev. Kenneth R. Leonard; daughter, Rebecca Daughtry; granddaughter, Shana McGee; and many other beloved family members.  

Left to cherish the many wonderful memories of their loving mom is her daughter, Linda McGee, Lexington, VA; son, Richie & Susan Leonard, Willis, VA; and son-in-law, Gary Daughtry, Ayden, NC.  Bonnie was a wonderful Memaw to five granddaughters & their spouses;  Carla  & David Clark, Lynn Loflin, Jennifer & Pete Magielnicki, Megan & Daniel Wetherington, and McKinley (Luke Sloss) Leonard.  She was also known as Old Memaw to her great-grandchildren; Tyler, Katie, Nick, Matthew, Maribeth, Gabriella, Braxton, Mischa, Charlie, Thomas, Opie, and Bella.  She also has two great-great-granddaughters, Myah Grace, Harper Lynn, Harper, and Harmony. 

Bonnie and Kenneth first started their Christian ministry in Collierstown, VA until they were called to Tabernacle Baptist Church, Bassett, VA where they served over 30 years.  Bonnie was an excellent seamstress mending many things and making doll clothes for the granddaughters.  In her later years, she enjoyed sitting at her kitchen table watching for the deer and birds to come by her window while putting together many, many puzzles.  Her cooking couldn’t be matched through the years that she provided for the many missionaries while they were visiting with the congregation at Tabernacle, their church family, not to mention her own family. 

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023 in the Hillcrest Cemetery at Colonial Baptist Church in Blue Ridge, VA with Rev. George Warden officiating. The family will receive friends from 5p.m. until 7p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Skyline Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation for their kind and loving care for Mom over the last two years.

Louise Dickerson Vest

 

Louise Dickerson Vest, 96 of Floyd County, went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2023 surrounded by family.

She was born on September 4, 1926 to Clarence and Elsie Dickerson. She was the beloved wife of Charlie “Hamp” Hampton Vest whom she now has joined in heaven. She was greeted in her heavenly home by so many including her parents, siblings and two daughters, Peggy Bott and Tammy Hiatt.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kathy (Haden) Dulaney; son, Kevin Vest; special daughters, Kimberly (Brandon) DeVault and Rebecca Gillespie. Additionally left to miss her are her grandchildren, Brad (Kimberly) Dulaney, Angie (Barry) LeNoir, Wayne Gillespie, Amanda (Matt) Anthony, Justin Gillespie, Kimberly (Brandon) DeVault, Rebecca Gillespie, Zach Vest, Douglas Gillespie, TJ Lunsford; many great-grandchildren; and many friends that became family.

After graduating from Shawsville High School, she went to work at Southern Dairies. While traveling to work on the bus in 1946, she met the love of her life, whom she married on December 28, 1946 and spent 70 years together. One of many pastimes she enjoyed was playing basketball. She played every year at Shawsville High School as well as many years on an independent team for Check Elementary at the age of 47 and many more enjoying cheering others on.

She had been caretaker to many over her lifetime including adopting four children, raising two grandchildren and she took care of both her parents until they passed. She cared for  many others whom she mentored each summer until the adoption of her four children. She has affected the lives of so many people in this area, not only as a Sunday School teacher of many years at Piedmont Methodist Church and Crockett Springs UMC. She was the treasure of Crockett Springs UMC for over 16 years, overseeing the construction of the new church and continuing to help as a founding member of Crockett Spring UMC throughout her lifetime. Additionally she touched the lives of many children working in the cafeteria for 15 years at Shawsville Elementary, including several years when she managed the cafeteria.

One of her most cherished accomplishments was advancing her way thru the chapters of the Eastern Star and leading to the title of Worthy Matron, inducting many others into it as she went on.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Crockett Spring United Methodist Church with Rev. Brad Dulaney officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. 

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for the wonderful care they have provided these last few months. Special thanks to Monica, Shannon and Todd.

Wayne Douglas Altis

 


Wayne Douglas Altis, 71 of Copper Hill, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, May 1, 2023. He is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Smith Altis; granddaughter, Halie Yaunsem; mother, Della Smoot (Earl); father, Charles Douglas Altis, Sr.; brother, Charles Douglas Altis, Jr.; and brother-in-law and good friend, James Mullins.

Wayne served with the 101st Airborne division, 506th Infantry from 1970-1973 and was a Vietnam War Veteran.

He is survived by his loving children, Adam & Heather Altis, Ashley & Joseph Yaunsem, and Allen Altis; grandchildren, Kalyan and Amaleah Altis, Irelyn, Rafe and Tabius Yaunsem, Zayne Altis; great-grandchildren, Kehlina and Kayden Altis; sisters, Bonnie Johnson (J.B.), Sylvia Mullins, Becky Forenash, and Donna Overstreet; brothers, David Altis, Dave & Charlotte Crouch; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration honoring Wayne and Patsy’s lives will be held at a later date.

Hazel Slusher Rutrough

 

Hazel Slusher Rutrough, 89 of Floyd, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband, Giles Lee Rutrough; sons, Jimmy Boothe and Danny Boothe; parents, William & Louise Davis Slusher; five brothers; and three sisters.

Hazel was known for her beautiful needlework including knitting, crocheting, and cross stitching. Among other things, she created lovely tablecloths and quilts for her family by using embroidery and cross stitching. Every year she also knitted caps and scarves for Christmas for Children.

Many of us were blessed by her God given talents.

She is survived by her children, Gary Boothe (Alisa), Brenda Allen (Lynwood), and David Boothe (Beverley); five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Bud) Slusher; sister-in-law, Phyllis Slusher; her special Slaughters’ Family; and her Laurel Branch Church Family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Angela Carr officiating. Interment will follow in the Slusher Jones Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her nurses at Good Samaritan Hospice, Monica Holfield and Taryn Brewer, and to her caregivers Shirley and Karen.
