Arthur Allen Stockner, 83 of Copper Hill passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018.  Interment will be in the Stockner Cemetery in Fancy Gap.

Karen Marie Simmons Hammond

Karen Marie Simmons Hammond of Griffin, GA passed away on Friday April 27, 2018 in Griffin, GA where she lived with her husband, Thomas Hammond for many years.  She was preceded by her husband, her mother Freeda Cannaday, and her father Hugh Cannaday.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Ehlers, son-in-law, Crawford Ehlers and one grandson, Christopher Ehlers. Also survive are her many family and friends in Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee.

Karen retired from Delta Airlines after 23 years of service.  Most recently, she worked in a fabric store where she enjoyed sharing her passion of sewing with others.  She was an avid animal lover and pampered her two Pekingese’s, Pebbles and Rebel.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 4, 2018 at Jacksonville Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to the Floyd County Humane Society, www.floydhumanesociety.org.

Sherman Dials

(June 7, 1931 — April 25, 2018)

Sherman Dials, 86, passed away, surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va., leaving behind an indelible legacy of love for his large family.

The child of Johnnie Dials and Addie Muncy of Martin County, Kentucky, Sherman was born on June 7, 1931, in Martin County, Kentucky. Often heralded by his children as “the happiest man alive,” Sherman was always singing and dancing, from the moment he awoke, throughout the day, and into the night. With a whistle and a smile, he worked hard to support his large family, instilling a work ethic and drive that has been passed on and nurtured among the generations that followed. But to Sherman, family and fun always came first, which served — and continues to serve — as a timeless example of how to properly live and love for the next generations. His smile, quick wit, hilarious one-liners, perfectly-combed hair, favorite songs, and nicknames for all of his children and grandchildren will be sorely missed, yet remembered and immortalized via the countless memories cherished by the family.

Sherman was working in Columbus, Ohio, when he met Nettie Grace Burnett. Both Sherman and ‘Gracie’ describe their introduction, subsequent courtship and marriage as destiny — they just “knew” that they were destined to be together, and it’s a love story that’s been written now for 56 years. They were married on July 22, 1961, and became the proud parents to six children — four sons (Jeff “Pooch,” Donnie “Tucker,” Johnnie “Whistle Dick,” and Tommy “Bo”) and two daughters (Lisa “Lucy-kye” and Trisha “Pee-Wee”) — eventually settling in the Appalachian Mountains of Floyd, Va.

Sherman has left to cherish his memory: his wife, Gracie Dials, of Floyd, Va.; his son, Jeff and (wife) Cathy Dials, of Novi, Mich. (children: Mindy Dials-Twyham and husband Drax [E.J., Noah, Andrew, Ruby, and Eva], Logan [Ada], Shane and wife Susan, and Janice); his son, Donnie and (wife) Nancy Dials, of Floyd, Va. (son: Tucker); his son, Johnnie and (wife) Marcie Dials, of Inez, Ky. (children: Megan, Haley, and Lucas); his son, Tommy and (wife) Alicia Dials, of Floyd, Va. (children: Derek and wife Jessie, Bradley, Kendall, and Jasmine); his daughter, Lisa and (husband) Freddie Gerald, of Indian Valley, Va. (children: Emily Creek, Lauren Paige and husband Austin Moles, and Mackenzie Gerald); and his daughter, Trisha Ann and (husband) Sam Calhoun, of Boones Mill, Va. Sherman is survived by Ray (brother) and Odell Dials, Moses (brother) and Liz Dials, James (brother) and Gladys Dials, Glenn (brother) and Rita Dials, Edith Diamond (sister), Liddie Jo Hunter (sister), and Anna Mae Dials (sister).

A visitation for family and friends is planned for 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at Maberry Funeral Home, located at 367 South Locust Street in Floyd, Va., with The Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. A funeral is planned for 11 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018, at Indian Valley Church of God, located at 2297 Macks Mountain Road NW in Indian Valley, Va.  Words of comfort and memories may  be shared with the family at www.maberryfuneralhome.com.

Carl Issac Belcher

Carl Issac Belcher, 80, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018. He was born on September 29, 1937 to Luther and Louana Belcher. He is preceded in death by both parents; sister, Sylvia Epperly; brother, J. B. Belcher; and son-in-law, Ricky Boyd.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geneva Wood Belcher; daughter, Alicia Boyd; sons and wives, Alan & Lisa Belcher and David & Lee Ann Belcher; sister, Juanita Moore; six grandchildren, Amy and Arthur Boyd, Lori Phillips, and Malory, Isaac and Brenna Belcher; three great-grandchildren, Aiden Boyd, and Jonathan and Emily Phillips; a niece and five nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 23, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd, VA. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church conducted by Pastor Jeff Dalton with interment in the church cemetery.

Carl loved his church, his family, bluegrass music, beagles, and horses.

Jewel Mae Coln Hubbard

Jewel Mae Coln Hubbard, 87 of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dillon H. Hubbard.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara Hubbard and Linda Hubbard; son, "John" Kelvin Hubbard; sister, Mary Ruth Chandler.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Topeco Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.   

Iva Keith Tolbert

Iva Collene Keith Tolbert, 89 of Floyd, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018. She was preceded in death by  husband, Palmer Tolbert; parents, Kerry and Bula Keith;  brother, Elmer (Delphinia) Keith; sister, Shirley (Ralph) Duncan; sons, Lester Michael Keith, Dwight Lee Hopper.

She is survived by daughters, Mary (Steve) Tolbert, Teresa (Sanford) Hatcher; of Floyd, son, Robert (Wanda) Hopper; of Suffolk, sisters, Edna Weddle, Peggy Bishop; of Floyd, brother, James (Doreda) Keith; of Christiansburg, nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren.

Iva graduated from Floyd High School in 1946 where she played basketball. She was a long time member of the Kemper Home Extension Club where she held a host of offices. She attended the Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store for many years where she made many friends.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Battle and Pastor Angela Tolbert Carr officiating. The interment will follow at Jacksonville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Ovada Cox Weeks, 91 of Floyd, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, April 13, 2018.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvie Weeks.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Troutt (Dewayne); stepsons, James Weeks and Roger Weeks (Dianne); grandchildren, Lisa McDaniel (John), Dena Wood (Dean), Denise Webb, Amanda Beverly (Dexter); step-grandchildren, Michelle Bourne, Jamie Weeks, Shawn Weeks; great-grandchildren, Dillion Wood (Lara), Drew Wood, Ashlyn McDaniel, Brooke Webb, Stacey Beverly, Olivia Beverly; step-great grandchildren, Matthew Bourne, Brittany Bourne, Christian Weeks; great-great granddaughter, Caroline Wood; step-great great grandchildren, Jayden Bourne, Bentley Bourne, April Bourne; brother, Archie Cox; sister, Agnes Montgomery.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Dewayne Troutt and Pastor Darlene Marshall officiating with interment in the Greasy Creek Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
