Carole Harris Mitchell


Carole Harris Mitchell, 75 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Oden James & Lorane Hylton Harris; and her sister, Judy Dulaney.

She is survived by her husband, Kevin D. Mitchell; sons & daughter-in-law, Coy & Lucinda Mitchell, Clark Mitchell, and Kreg Mitchell; granddaughter, Amber Mitchell; sister-in-law, Melva Stultz; niece, Lisa Dulaney Sutphin; and nephew, Claude Stultz.

Per Carole’s request, services will be private.

Chester Harley Sowers



Chester Harley Sowers, 92 of Floyd, departed this life on January 29, 2020.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Claudine Thomas Sowers, and their four children: Martha Altizer (Jim); Rebecca Sowers, Joseph Sowers (Vickie) and Virginia Sowers (Tom Loper); four grandchildren: Suzanne Yearout (Monty), Wesley Altizer, Phillip Sowers (Melissa) and Amanda Lovelace (Daniel); and four great-grandchildren: Caroline, Jordan, Elias and Wyatt.

Additional survivors include his much-loved sister Joy Huff and his Thomas family in-laws; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; close neighbors, friends and his church family.

A long-time member of Little River Baptist Church, Chester served through the years as a trustee, deacon and Sunday School teacher. A WWII Veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy.

We remember our husband and dad as a man who tirelessly worked the land and generously shared the fruits of his labor.

The family extends its love and appreciation to the caregivers of New River Valley Carilion Hospice, especially Karen and Debbie; and to our caregiving neighbor Lara.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Little River Baptist Church with Pastor Bradley Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Red Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Walter Robert Thompson

Walter Robert Thompson, 85 of Roanoke, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond & Nellie Thompson; brother & sister-in-law, Roy & Betty Thompson; brother-in-law, Chuck Salmon; and father-in-law & mother-in-law, Rufus & Newassa Conner.

Walter served in the United States Navy. He was a licensed pilot and flew many missions with the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of Laurel Ridge Primitive Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Scruggs Thompson; step-sons, Brian (LeAnn) Scruggs, Joseph (Bethanie) Scruggs; son, Shaun (Tina) Thompson; step-grandchildren, Conner, Adam, and Julien Scruggs, and Ryan Watson-Triplett; sisters, Sue Thompson, Nancy Mason, and Ellen Salmon.  

Funeral services will be held at  2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Timothy Crane officiating. Interment will follow in the Restvale Cemetery with Military Rites by the Floyd VFW Post 7854 and American Legion Post 127. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Susie Ann Overstreet


Susie Ann Overstreet, 71 of Willis, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy & Beatrice Goad; brother, Edward Goad; and sister, Geneva Walker.

Susie was a graduate of Floyd County High School. She was a faithful employee of Willis Village Mart for 22 years.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James E. Overstreet; sons, James Overstreet (Cheryl Polage) and Jonathan Overstreet (Karen Dixon); grandson, Nathan Overstreet (Brittany Shipley); brother, Roy Goad; sister-in-law, Carolyn Goad; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the funeral home.

Stylite “Bridgette”  Harmon, 85 of Floyd, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Harmon; and son, Patrick Harmon.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2020 at the Topeco Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Sutphin officiating.
