Russell M. Harris

 

Russell M. Harris passed away at the age of 92 on February 26, 2023. 

Born and raised in Floyd, VA, he was a son of Clarence and Lura Alderman Harris.  After serving four years in the US Air Force he moved to Northern Virginia where he worked as a mechanic for Capital Airlines at the now Reagan National Airport. He later made a career change, working as a State Farm agent for many years until his retirement in 1990. His retirement home was in Warrenton, Virginia.  He and his wife, Margurite, purchased an RV and enjoyed many years of travel, often spending winters in Florida.  They made many friends along the way.  Russell was an avid golfer enjoying many rounds with friends and family over the years.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Sarah “Margurite” Epperly Harris; and daughter, Beverly Gail. 

He is survived by his son, Roderick (Sherry) Harris; daughter, Shelley Harris Kapp; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Wendell (LaNita) Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, in the Topeco Cemetery with Pastor Mike Battle officiating.  A celebration of life will immediately follow at the Topeco Church of the Brethren fellowship hall.

Ruby C. Breeding

 

Ruby C. Breeding, 77 of Check, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. She is preceded in death by her parents, Winfred & Lurlie Prater; and 15 siblings.

She is survived by her husband, Dwight Breeding; children, Robbie & Stephanie Compton, Eric & Sarah Compton, and Dede & Clyde Wilson; grandchildren, Kayla, Scotty, Nikki, Tiffany, Brittany, Shawnee, Maizie, Allie, Nathan, and Baby Emmy; 19 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Lurlie May Coleman, Hazel Ball, and Betty Amundson.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Lacie Arwood Cox

 

Lacie Arwood Cox, 83 of Indian Valley, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023. He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Gallimore Cox.

He is survived by his sons, Norman A. Cox, Norbert L. Cox, and Raymond N. Cox; daughter & son-in-law, Judy Duncan (Alton, II); grandsons, Trey Duncan (Sierra) and Caleb Duncan; siblings, Waitman (Patricia), Eldridge (Mary), and Payton (Judy), and Gayle; brother-in-law, Bobby Phillips (and the late Noble); special friend Sandra

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Thursday, February 23, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Nathan Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Ambrose Cox Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until Noon prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses on the medical unit at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center for their care as well as Lacie's special friend Sandra.

Evelyn Newman Conner

 

Evelyn Newman Conner, 64 of Check, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. She is preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Newman; and daughter, Lindy Rupe.

Evelyn took pride in being a dedicated nurse at Skyline Nursing and Rehabilitation.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, William Michael Conner; daughters & sons-in-law, Deana & Michael Trail and Debra & Michael Gallimore; father, Harold Newman; grandchildren, Caytie Rupe, Matthew Conner, Amber Rupe, Nathan Trail, Garrett Gallimore, and Evan Gallimore; six brothers; and one sister.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2023 for a celebration of Evelyn’s life in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Paul S. Hill

 



Paul S. Hill, 89 of Willis, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, John F. & Nancy Poff Hill; brothers, John Hill and Joseph Hill; and sister, Eva Webb.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Outten; daughters, Deborah DeJesus (Ronald), Pauline Horton (Richard), and Donna Marshall (Harvey Marshall, Jr.); sons, David Hill and Paul Hill; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister, Ann Henley-Paulson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Nathan Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Willis Cemetery with Military Rites by the Grover King VFW Post #1115 and the Army National Guard. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Geneva Mitchell Williams

 

Geneva Mitchell Williams, 95 of Indian Valley, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband, Forester Williams; parents, John & Mandy Reece Mitchell; sisters & brothers-in-law, Pearl & Curtis Huff, Essie & Joseph “Mutt” Franklin, and Ocie & Cecil Stevenson; and brother, Charlie Mitchell.

She retired from the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

She is survived by her sons & daughter-in-law, Foster & Helen Williams and George Williams; daughters & sons-in-law, Carol & Brad Boehmler, Sharon & Andrew Glenn, and Margaret & Billy Love; grandchildren, David Williams (Lynn), Donnie Williams (Diana), Melanie Leonard, Richard Williams (Kerri), Greg Williams (Amber), Anita Williams (Richie), Brad Phillips, Stephanie Boehmler, David Coward, and Amanda Love; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2023 in the Mitchell Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Nathan Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Jerrel Ray Harris, 73 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Nellie Harris.

He is survived by his sisters, Beulah & Charles Conner and Rhonda & James Holland; nephews and niece, David Conner (Karen), Danah Meadows (Gene), Jason Turner (Wendy), and Wes Turner (Julie Scalza); and great-nephews and great-niece, Matthew Conner, Ian Conner, Solomon Mayes, Ethan Meadows, Hadley Turner, Hudson Turner, and William Curry.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Stevie Dell Thompson, 68 of Willis, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Forest & Frances Thompson; and brother, Michael Jim Thompson.

He is survived by his children, Michael Thompson, Christopher & Rebecca Thompson, Brandon Thompson, and Randy Thompson; grandchildren, Phoenix Thompson, Maddox Thompson, Laura Thompson, Noah Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson, Steven Thompson; sisters & brother-in-law, Janey & Larry Price and Peggy Barbour; and nephew, Bryan Price.

Graveside services will be held at Noon on Friday, February 3, 2023 in the Pineview Cemetery with Pastor Nathan Montgomery officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.
