Ralph Morris Vest, Sr.


Ralph Morris Vest. Sr.,86 of Copper Hill, passed away peacefully Friday, December 30, 2016.  He is preceded in death by his wife,  Frances Vest; parents, Morris and  Ida Vest; son, Ralph Vest, Jr.; mother of his children, Mary Vest; brothers, Kyle Vest and David Vest.
He is survived by his daughters & sons-in-law, Cindy and Art Luby, Donna and Oliver Hepler, Dee Dee Williams; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Penny Vest, Charles and Loretta Vest, James and Katie Vest; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Janney, Ruth and Elvin Ingram, Marie and Bill Thomas; devoted companion, Vestal Whitlock; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Rev. Bob McLavey officiating with interment in the Stonewall Church Cemetery.  Family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 6, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Betty Jean Slusher Mannon

Betty Jean Slusher Mannon was born November 25, 1929 to George and Callie Slusher in Floyd County, Virginia.  She died December 22, 2016 after a brief illness at the age of 87.  Betty learned the hard work of farm life on her father's farm and her creativity in sewing and crafts from her mother.  She married Carnice Mannon on December 26, 1950.  Her supportive work made it possible for him to serve the Lord in ministry as she formed their home and raised their four children, Lester, Larry, Dale and Vicki.  She was known in the community for her work as a seamstress.  After her children were grown, she worked for Simpkins Photography, and cared for many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her humble simplicity endeared her to many.  She will be remembered as a person of great character, strength and generosity.  She is survived by her siblings:  her brother Maurice Slusher and his wife Nadine, her brother Edward Lane and his wife Mina, and her sister Jane Williams.  She is survived by her children:  her son Lester Mannon and his wife Barbara, her son Dale Mannon and his wife Lauri, and her daughter Vicki Morris and her husband Keith.  She is survived by her grandchildren:  Misti Gardner and her husband Jared, Derek Mannon and his wife Allie, Callie Balentine and her husband Bo, Jedidiah Mannon and his wife Shelley, Logan Morris, Sarah Mannon, Carley Mannon, Jared Mannon, Jordan Mannon, Lindsey Mannon, Jacob Mannon and Tate Mannon.  Finally, she is survived by her great-grandchildren:  Daylon Mannon, Mallorie Gardner, Jonah Gardner, Knox Mannon, London Mannon, Olivia Mannon, Mabry Mannon, Louella Balentine and Drew Mannon, as well as many extended family and friends.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Carnice, and her son, Larry.  The family appreciates the work of Dr. Baum and his staff, and the staff of the Skyline Nursing Home for their care and kindness.  The family will receive visitors at the Floyd Church of Christ on Monday, December 26 from noon to 2:00pm, followed immediately by a memorial service and then burial in the Mannon Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please send any memorial gifts to the Mannon Cemetery Fund, P. Clarence "Red" Moore



Clarence “Red” Moore, 80 of Blacksburg, peacefully went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 20, 2016.  He retired from VPI-SU and enjoyed music, laughter, farming and never met a stranger.
He is preceded in death by his wives, Eloise Wright Moore and Aletta Moore;  his parents John Ulysses and Olivia Beulah Meredith Moore;  sisters, Dorothy Hendricks, Ruth Fleck, Catherine Bloxom, Ada Harrison, Thelma “Sylvia” Price; brothers, John Moore, Clifford Moore and Charles Moore.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Angie& Joe Gallimore, Pam Moore Hughes & Adam, Lisa and Shad Cobb; four  step-children; grandchildren, Matthew Moore & Brandon Brogan, Brittany Dowdy & Cory Kennedy, Tamara Dowdy & Zac Dobb, Montanna Collins, Hunter & Grant Gallimore;  great-grandchildren, Carmen and Blaze Brogan, Chloe & Jeremy Moore, Ellie Dobb; sister & brother-in-law, Doris & Charlie Trumbo; brothers & sister-in-law, Bobby Moore, Denny & Shelvey Moore; sister-in-law, Rita Moore; many  nieces & nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2016 at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren (409 Ridgeview Rd. Floyd, VA) with Pastor Steve Johnson officiating with interment in the Beaver Creek Cemetery. Family will receive friends 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Paul Lincoln Slater, Jr.


Paul Lincoln Slater, Jr., 70 of Copper Hill, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen M. Slater.
Paul was an U.S. Air Force Veteran and served in Vietnam.  He was a loving father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, William Slater and Leslie, Wade Slater and Betty Minnix, Scott Slater and Angie; grandchildren, Kristen, Samantha, Caleb and Zack.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
