Arlene Williams Blackwell


Ileda Arlene Williams Blackwell (Granny to most who knew her), 102, of Check, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 26, 2016.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Ramon Blackwell, her daughter, Mildred Blackwell, and her parents, Charles and Olive Williams.  She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Henry Williams, Kate Whitlock, Dave Williams, Abe Williams, Ike Williams, Alverta Martin, Elzada Boothe, and Eula Martin.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, John L. and Betty R. Blackwell of Check, her daughter, Linda B. Barlow of Check; grandchildren; Sandra B. Settles and Nate Settles of Salem, Carol Blackwell of Check, Kathy Barlow and Michael Aftandilian of Roanoke and Dianna Blackwell-Hale and Paul Hale of Check.  Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Alexandra C. Turpin and Austin Turpin, Rachel Custer and Cameron Elkins, Nicholas Conner, Christoper Conner, Jared Custer, Trey Hale, Emma Hale and Caroline Hale; great-great grandchildren, Madison Worrell and Harper Worrell.  She is also survived by a multitude of dearly loved nieces and nephews.Granny was a member of Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren.  She was a retired farmer and an avid gardener until just a few years ago. She loved the Lord and enjoyed reading her Bible, singing hymns and watching preaching on TV.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren  with Bro. Hebron Quesenberry and Bro. Elbert Lee  Naff officiating. Interment in the Red Oak Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made in Granny’s honor to Red Oak Grove Cemetery or  Floyd County Station 3 Fire Department, as Granny was very proud of Jared’s service there.



Covy Melvin Sowers


Covy  Melvin  Sowers, 96, of Willis, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 28, 2016.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Elverna Harris Sowers and Great-granddaughter, Wendy Weddle.

He is survived by his son, Roy Sowers; daughters, Christine Martin (Owen) , Melva Sutphin; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; one great-great great grandchild.
Funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m.,  Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor  Mike Varner officiating  with Military Rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. Interment to follow in the Topeco Cemetery.  Family will receive friends, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Virginia "Ginny" Turman




Virginia “Ginny” Turman, 83, of Bahama, NC, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 20, 2016.  She was born in Martinsville, VA, the daughter of the late John Eanes and Ruth Slaydon Eanes.
Mrs. Turman is survived by her husband, Tepee Raden Turman; son, Curtis Turman and Ruth of Raleigh and granddaughter, Cassie.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Sutphin officiating with interment in the Turman Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from Noon to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Hallie Edith Webb Semones

Hallie Edith Webb Semones, 76 of Salem, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 19, 2016.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Dawn Semones.
She is survived by her husband, Donald H. Semones; daughters, Vicki Mabery, Kathy Bell (George); brother, Sidney Webb (Allie Belle);sisters, Lois Boyd, Mozelle Boyd, Hilda Dalton; grandson, Jake Mabery (Maria); step grandson, Da’Von Bell.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Howard Nester officiating with interment in the Topeco Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Ruby Dickerson Turman, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016. She was preceded  in death by her parents, Moten & Gracie Burnette Dickerson; siblings, Judy Clyde Dickerson, Oleida D. Marcum, Virginia D. Robertson, Margaret D. Hylton, GonzaLee D. Mitchell, Moten H. Dickerson, Jr., John Beryl Dickerson.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Evergreen Memorial Park, 1307 Summit Avenue,  SW.,  Roanoke, VA. 24015.

Joann Mitchell Estes

Joann Mitchell Estes, 79, of Riner, passed away Friday, March 11, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Larmie Mitchell; husband, James Butler Estes, Jr.; brother, Bill Mitchell; sister, Linda Nolen; great-grandson, Chase Conner.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Garry and Sherry Estes; of Floyd, Randall and Sandy Estes; of Riner; daughters and son-in-law, Patty Noland and fiance’ Michael Parrish; of Oklahoma, Jean and Clinton Marshall; of Floyd. Six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Joyce Manson, of Floyd; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Harrison, Mary Ann Estes, Sadie Estes; brothers-in-law, L.T. Nolen, Fred Estes.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday March 14, 2016 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. The interment will follow at the Thomas Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday March 13, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Sparrel T. Turner


Sparrel Tyler Turner, 95, of Floyd, passed away into his eternal rest March 7, 2016. He was born in Floyd County January 4, 1921 to the late Stant W. Turner and EllaTrail Turner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Claris Radford Turner and several brothers and sisters.He is survived by his son and daughter- in- law Tyler and Frankie Turner, and daughter and son-in-law Doris and Hebron Quesenberry all of Floyd, sister Venice Barton and sister-in-law Arlene Turner. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Melissa Thompson (Scott), Tammy Williams (Jeff), Renee Turner and Tina Osborne (Terry), nine great-grandchildren, Bridget Lucas (Justin), Brandon Thompson, Vincent and Michael Osborne, Spencer Turner (Brittany), Fayth Nichols, Megan, Nicholas and AJ. Williams. Also surviving are two great-great grandchildren, Amelia and Cooper Lucas, one step-Granddaughter Kristi Shaw (Mark). Several nieces and nephews also survive.
He retired from Radford Arsenal on February 1, 1983 after 34 years of service.He is a member of Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren.The family would like to thank a very special, caring caregiver, Kathy Lingelbach  who has been caring for him 8 years.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m.Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Bro. Hebron Quesenberrry and Bro. Richard Thomas officiating.  Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2016.  Family will also receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

Newassa Craighead Conner



On March 3, 2016 at the age of 89, Newassa Craighead Conner went peacefully to heaven to be with the Lord and her husband Rufus (Brown) Conner. Brown and Newassa were married for 61 years before his death on February 19, 2005. She was born August 31, 1926 to the late Cora & Ivory Craighead. Preceded in death by her infant twins; step-brother, Harry Vest, brothers-in-law & Wives; Joe & Doris Conner, Earnest & Evelyn Conner, sisters-in-law & husbands; Doris & Homer Gilliam, Edith & Arvel Slone.


She is survived by her devoted daughter; Dolores Thompson (Walter); grandsons; Brian Scruggs (LeAnn Triplett) and Joseph Scruggs (Kelly); great grandchildren; Ryan Triplett Watson, Conner Scruggs, Adam Scruggs and Julien Scruggs; nieces and nephews; two cousins; Jo Ann Maberry and Gwendolyn Angle.

She was a dedicated, loving mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a member of Laurel Ridge Primitive Baptist Church.

Thanks to Gentle Shepherd Hospice and special thanks to care giver Shelby Sullivan who was a God send to Dolores.

Funeral Service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Elder Timothy Crane.  Interment will follow at Restvale Cemetery.  Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
