Deborah Faye Nester Quesenberry Lucas

 

Deborah Faye Nester Quesenberry Lucas, 68 of Radford, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022. She is preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Griffith; mom, Eloise Cunningham Nester; and siblings, Tamra Roberts and Donna Griffith.

Debbie lived her life always putting others before herself. She always had a smile on her face resulting in a smile on your face.

She enjoyed the simple things in life, raising two wonderful daughters and devoting a life profession of working with and around young students during her 30+ years of service to Radford University.

She was known as the “card lady” to her father and siblings. Not a holiday went by that we did not receive an expression of the season. Debbie thrived on being around her family and friends who are truly going to miss her.

She is survived by her children, Melissa Quesenberry & fiancé Vastine Walker of Dublin and Christy Roop & fiancé Mark Crawford of Christiansburg; father, Robert Lee Nester, Sr.; grandchildren, Stuart Quesenberry (Morgan) of Kannapolis, NC, Corey Roop (Amri Enger) of Willis, Kelsey Roop (fiancé Peyton Bailey) of Knoxville, TN, and Lindsay Hunt of Dublin; great-grandchildren, Noah Quesenberry of Kannapolis, NC, and Hemma & Sergio Delatorre of Willis; siblings, Charlotte Nester Phillips (Duane) of WIlliamsburg, Robert Lee Nester, Jr. of Morehead City, NC, Jeanette Nester Brown (Dale) of Atlantic Beach, NC, Teresa Nester (Susan) of Floyd, Dale Nester (Stephanie) of Fredericksburg, Lisa Lovern (David) of Christiansburg, Diana Weeks (Roger) of Riner, and Debbie Keith (Douglas) of Riner; and special friends, Janet Garrett and Joe Lucas.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Julius Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Joseph Harmon Caldwell

 

Joseph Harmon Caldwell passed away on June 26, 2022 at Carilion Hospital of NRV in Radford.

Joe was born during a terrific snowstorm in Floyd VA on March 4, 1942 to Thornton William and Senora Harmon Caldwell. With the exception of time spent in the military, Joe lived on his farm in Indian Valley, VA.

Joining the Army at age 18, Joe served in the 101st Airborne Division as a proud “Screaming Eagle” until he was transferred to Korea, where he served over two years. After military service, Joe was a long -distance truck driver and enjoyed driving all over the United States until he retired to care for his wife, who had M.S.

In addition to taking care of his farm, Joe was an admired trainer of foxhunting dogs and was a respected breeder of foxhounds on the East Coast. One of his greatest pleasures was running the hounds with his foxhunting buddies.

He was a great storyteller and possessed a sense of humor that his friends and family enjoyed. He had a natural talent for training horses.

Joe was a man of strong faith, who loved his family and delighted in his children and grandchildren, and loved his country.

He was an outdoors person who enjoyed fishing, the mountains, bluegrass music, and God’s creations.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Thornton and Senora Caldwell, and his loving wife of forty-four years, Alice Shelor Caldwell.

He is survived by his children, Rhonda (Chuck) Lydeard of Morehead, KY; Jennifer (David) Billstrom, Black Mountain, NC; Jimmy (Brandy) Caldwell, Abingdon, VA; Senora (Paul) Faulkner, Floyd, VA., and grandchildren, Khalil Caldwell, Dustin Faulkner, Sandra (Jack) March; Peyton Faulkner; Rachel Caldwell; James Caldwell; Luke Buchanan and Cole Buchanan, and his siblings, Mary (Ab) Huff, Mildred Weddle, Sandra (Jack) Davis, and his sisters-in-law, Susie Shelor and Edna Ann Shelor.

The family wishes to offer special appreciation to Joe’s wonderful caregivers, Teresa Moses and Harmony Pratt, who enabled to Joe to be in the comfort of his home during his extended illness.

And, special acknowledgment to Joe’s daughter, Senora, whose outstanding nursing care and love and support gave strength to her Dad.

The family is also grateful to the compassionate staff at Carilion NRV/Radford, who treated Joe with respect, empathy and excellent care during his last day on earth.

Visitation for Mr. Caldwell will be held at Meadows Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan on Friday, July 1st, 2022 from 11am to 12:30 pm, followed by the funeral service at 12:30pm. Military rites will be held at the graveside at the church.

William "Bill" Gary Turman


William “Bill” Gary Turman, 75 of Indian Valley, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, Otis & Lydia Howell Turman; grandsons, Daniel Joseph Turman and Anthony Shane Vest; brother & sister-in-law, Archie Wayne & Edna Turman; sister & brother-in-law, Lois Jean & Paul Edwards.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Etheleen Anne Turman; sons, Gary William Turman (Elizabeth Holland) and Danny Joe Turman (Kimberly); daughter, Sonia Turman Vest (Robert); grandchildren, Addison S. Vest, Joshua Kohlenberg, Brittney MacDougall, Lauren Turman, Olivia Turman, and Emma Turman; great-grandchildren, Hunter Kohlenberg, Lukas MacDougall, and Keegan Turman; sisters & brothers-in-law, Carolyn & Richard Thomas, Kathy & Kenneth Huff, and Diane & Charlie Stultz; and his faithful fur companion, Rusty.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Turman/Cruise Cemetery with Military Rites by The Army National Guard and Grover King VFW Post# 1115. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Disabled American Veterans.

Shelven Aaron (Sonny) Vest, 89 of Floyd, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Aaron Vest and Laura Hoback Vest; wives, Norma Gene Boothe Vest and Beulah Austin Whitlock Vest.

He is survived by his daughter, Annette Vest (Mike) Battle; sons, Darryl (Robin) Vest and John (Mary) Vest; step-daughter, Debra (Charlie) Statzer; step-sons, Daniel (Sabrina) Whitlock and David (Kathy) Whitlock; grandchildren, Eric (Amanda) Janney, Kimberly (Andrew) Nichols, Amanda (Joey) Belcher, Alexis Vest, Travis (Jessica) Boyd, Kenny Moore (Sarah Wyatt), and Brooklynn Underwood; step-grandchildren, Ethan (Jennifer) Whitlock, Waylon Whitlock (Emily Barker) and Will (SaZha) Statzer; great-grandchildren, Luke and Ava Janney, Aaron, Carleigh, and Ethan Nichols, Aubrie Grenier, Emmett Boyd, and Hayden Martin; and step-great-grandson, Elijah Whitlock.

Katherine Victorine Gardner


 

Katherine Victorine Gardner, 95 of Floyd, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022. She is predeceased by her husband, Bernard E. Gardner; parents, Edward Sanders Hull and Nancy Arlena Bolt Hull; brothers, Dixie D. Hull (Ava) and Rush Hull (Nancy).

She is survived by her daughter, Vicki S. Gardner; son, Donald R. Gardner (Joyce); grandchildren, Ashlee V. Gardner, Adam G. Gardner (Carrie); great-grandson, Nathaniel J. Gardner.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Timothy Hale and Pastor Richard Gregory officiating. The interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Priscilla June Smith Dillon

 

Priscilla June Smith Dillon, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2019, in Eustis, Florida.

June was born in Floyd County on June 9, 1942.

June is preceded in death by her parents, George Robert “Rob” Smith and Roxie Gaye Radford Smith of Floyd; sisters, Dorothy Gaye Smith of Floyd and Nina Christine Smith Blankenship of Christiansburg; and brothers, Jeff Willard Smith, Pete Marion Smith, and Bobby N Smith, all of Floyd.

June is survived by “son”, Scott Guy (Sandy) of Missouri; special “brother”, Jack Smith (Patsy) of Florida; special niece, Peggy Blankenship Carter of Virginia; special friend, Lanette Stanley of Florida and Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at the gazebo at Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd VA.

Dorothy Elizabeth Janney

 

 

Dorothy Elizabeth Janney, 98, of Copper Hill, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2022. Dorothy was born May 7, 1924 to the late Morris Allen and Ida Mae Cannaday Vest. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Willard Janney; brothers, Kyle A. Vest, Ralph M. Vest, David R. Vest.

She is survived by her sisters, Ruth V. Ingram, Marie V. Thomas (Bill); brothers, Paul L. Vest, Charles W. Vest (Loretta P.), James B. Vest (Katie S.); sister-in-law, Evelyn H. Janney. In addition to her siblings she loved and was loved and adored by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a graduate of Check High School. She was a long time employee of an overall factory later known as Imperial Reading. She was a vital part of the payroll department and the last employee to leave when the factory closed.  There is no way to express what a wonderful person she was, very loving, kind and giving. She made and gave away many afghans and was also known for her pound cakes and green beans.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jerry Hylton and Pastor Darren Landon officiating. The Interment will follow at the Stonewall Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Stanley Lee Weeks

 

Stanley Lee Weeks, 82 of Floyd, Virginia went peacefully to be with his Lord on June 17, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents; Ray & Goldie Weeks, siblings; Mitzi, Sheldon, Shirley, Harless, and Eugene, and a special grand-daughter; Amber. 

He is survived by his loving wife Joyce of 59 years, and children, Tammy (Gerald) Hylton, Danny (Julie) Weeks, Patricia (Lawrence) Whitlock, and Tracy (Jerry) Heinline, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. 

Stanley served in the National Guard for 7 years and retired from Hooker Furnishings in Roanoke, Virginia after 30 years. He was a faithful member and Sunday School Teacher at Beaver Creek Baptist Church. He held a special place in his heart for his cat Patches.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Shannon Hicks and Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Beaver Creek Cemetery with Military Rites by the Army National Guard.
