Larry Dean Howell


Larry Howell, 74 of Floyd, passed away February 26, 2018.  He was born February 22, 1944 and was a longtime farmer in Floyd County.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Alice Howell; sisters, Ruth Landers, Callie Landreth and Lilli Witt; brother, Joe Howell.

He is survived by his wife Mary Howell; brothers, John Howell and wife Danah, Kurtz Howell; sister, Lou Alice Baker; many nieces and Nephews; many good friends.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2018 at Maberry Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Wilson Cemetery in Check, VA. Flag presentation by Floyd VFW Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Glenna Moles Mabery



Glenna Moles Mabery, 91 of Willis, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmond Mabery; sons, Glen Dale Mabery and Gary Wayne Mabery and five siblings.



She is survived by her daughters, Lois Mabery of Willis, Shirley Moran of Willis, and Rachel Goad of Patrick Springs; grandchildren, Dena Nester (Jeff), Mark Mabery, Vickie Moxley, Karen Roberts, Stacy Moran (Hillary), Jamie Mabery, Tiffany Wilkenson (Adam), Amber Goad, Haley Goad; 12 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; brother, Alvin Moles (Frances) of Meadows of Dan; special friend and deeply loved caregiver, Jami Handy; many nieces and nephews.


Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Nathan Montgomery and Pastor Mindy Chaffin officiating with interment in the Willis Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Lillian "Lynn" Gillespie



Lillian “Lynn” Gillespie, 77 of Floyd, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018. 
She is survived by her sons, Bobby Gillespie (Candy) and Ernie Gillespie (Teresa); brothers, Clyde Marshall, Clinton Marshall, Charles Marshall; sister, Muriel Ratcliffe; grandchildren, Ricky, Conner, Bradley, Brandon, Caitlyn, Tanner.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Floyd United Methodist Church with Rev. Whitey Taylor officiating with interment in the Cannaday Cemetery.  Family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Vernon Alvin akers (Jackrabbit)





Vernon Alvin Akers (Jackrabbit), 76 of Hiwassee, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018.  He was born to Perry and Ollie Akers of Riner March 1941. Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews.

He worked for Fred Thompson of Riner from his youth for many years driving a dump truck and working on the farm.  Later he went to work for Sisson & Ryan Quarry in Shawsville driving a truck where he worked up until his passing.

He loved his extended family at Sisson & Ryan and the people at the shooting matches in Floyd.  A very special thank you to Priscilla (Cookie) Patrick for being such a great friend to not only Vernon but to all of us at Sisson & Ryan.

To cherish his memory are his wife Marna; daughter, Donna Alice Akers Lazenby; many friends and family.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating with interment to follow in the White Rock Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers you may make donations to your local animal shelter in Vernon’s name.

Glenn Thomas Moles

Glenn Thomas Moles, 72 of  Floyd , passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents Arlie Geneva and William Wyatt Moles.

He is survived by his sister, Janie Catherine Weddle; niece, Julie Weddle; uncles, Ray Midkiff and Grant Midkiff.

Funeral service will be held at Noon, Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Floyd Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Hudgins officiating.  Interment will follow in the Harris Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to Noon prior to the service.
