Russell Eugene Brown


Russell Eugene Brown, 71 of Floyd, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019. He is preceded in death by his son, David King; and his parents, Gene & Lillie Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Brown; children, Jessica Brown, Steven Brown, Kelly Brown, Scottie Brown and wife Barbara; four grandchildren; sisters & brother-in-law, Patty & John Duncan, and Brenda Goad; and sisters-in-law, Gloria Radford and Sylvia Radford.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Cecil Brown officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Palmer Rakes McPeak



Palmer Rakes McPeak, 94, of Meadows of Dan, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin H. and Effie Boyd McPeak; son, Randy Jay McPeak; grandson, Rusty Lee McPeak; great-grandson, Jayvion Reid Hylton; sisters, Violet McPeak, Kathleen McPeak; and brothers, Wesley McPeak, Marvin McPeak and Wiley McPeak.

He is survived by his sons, Allan Rex McPeak, Robert Wayne McPeak, Timothy Mark McPeak; daughters & son-in-law, Lori Candice & Doug Easley, Cynthia “Cindy” Dawn McPeak; grandchildren, Jennifer “Nicki” Nicole Hylton, Palmer Blake McPeak, Kayla McPeak, Paige McPeak, Casey Mabery, Megan Mabery; great-grandchildren, Kalix Aiden Smith, Parker McPeak, Alden Patrick Gorman, John Branson Gorman and Nate Joseph Gorman; brothers & sister-in-law, Clifton & Ruby McPeak , and Ross McPeak; and the mother of his children, Mary R. McPeak.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Wolfe-McPeak Cemetery with Rev. Nathan Montgomery officiating and Military Rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post # 7854 and American Legion Post # 127. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – Noon prior to the service at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Mildred Lester Memitt


Mildred Lester Memitt, 83 of Riner, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, William I. Memitt; parents, James & Zell Lester; granddaughter, Jennifer Memitt; brothers, Jimmy Lester, Curtis Lester, and Benny Lester; and sisters, Audrey Underwood and Ann Morgan.


She is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Bill & Sandra Memitt, Ralph & Vickie Memitt, and Ted & Pamela Memitt; grandsons, Eric Martin, Matt and Colby Memitt, and Daniel Memitt; granddaughters, Skyler Quesinberry, Jessica, Ashlee, Tiffany, Maegen and Abigail Memitt; great-grandchildren, Tristen Bond, Briana Martin, Sheila Memitt, Levi Sutphin, Mason Caldwell, and Willow Quesinberry; brother & sister-in-law, Ronnie & Betty Lester; sisters & brothers-in-law, Barbara & Kenneth Kenley, Janice & Claude Miles, Iris & Dean Sowers, and Joyce & Lloyd Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at Noon on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Fellowship Baptist Church, Riner, VA with Pastor James Bradley and Pastor Russell Gordon officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Cemetery on Broad Shoals Road. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Irvin Hampton Waldron


Irvin Hampton Waldron, 95 of Copper Hill, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 10, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Betty K. Waldron.

He was a World War II Veteran and was the owner and operator of Mountain Ditching Corp. for many years.

He is survived by his children, Glenn (Joyce) Waldron, Alice Waldron, and Mark (Donna) Waldron; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Dewey Cleveland Waldron; and sisters & brother-in-law, Carnell Poe and Jill & Tommy Jones.

Funeral service will be held at Noon on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Mount Union Church of the Brethren with Pastor Greg Fleshman and Pastor Gary Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Kefauver Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the church.
