John Glendel Conner



John Glendel Conner, 71 of Elliston, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Daniel & Gladys Burnett Conner.



John had a B.S. in Biology from Lynchburg College and a Master’s Degree in Science Education from the University of Virginia. He taught the Earth & Physical Science classes for over 33 years for Roanoke County Schools at Northside.  Throughout his teaching career he attended and made presentations at science conferences, workshops, and NSF institutes. After retirement, John became a “hay farmer” and supplied neighbors with hay for their horses. In his spare time, John continued to pursue his lifelong hobbies of gunsmithing, knife making, and leatherwork for both guns and knives. A perfectionist at heart, he created beautiful pieces. He also had a love for the outdoors. He was a Ham Radio Operator with the call sign of KI4MGB, member of the Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club, and a Farm Bureau member.



He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Donna Ann Conner; son, Craig Conner; daughter & son-in-law, Kelly Conner & Jim Nist; grandchildren, Annalee Nist, Floyd Nist; brother & sisters-in-law, Garland & Ruth Conner; aunt, Helen Hylton; nieces, Carolyn Conner, Melinda & Lonnie Lemons; nephews, David & Jamie Conner, Kyle Berry; great-nephews, Jonathan Lemons, Michael Lemons; cousin, Dianne & Danny Hamm; and sisters-in-law & brothers-in-law, Dean & Sharon Berry, Diana Berry & Steve Marshall.


Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Granville Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in the Shelor Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue/Bob Hope Road, Miami, Florida 33136-1494.

Thomas "Pat" Boyd



Thomas “Pat” Boyd, 71 of Floyd, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2014. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly B. Farmer; mother, Ocie Dickerson Boyd Keith; father, Thomas Frank Boyd; two brothers, David Boyd and Ray Boyd; one sister, Carol Jean Setliff.

He was retired from Hollingsworth & Vose and enjoyed the last five years as a bus driver.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hylton Boyd; son & daughter-in-law, Jason & Rhonda Boyd; son-in-law, Kim Lee Farmer; grandchildren, Travis Farmer & wife Danielle, Brice Farmer & wife Beth, Caleb Farmer, Courtney Farmer, Dylan Boyd, Matthew Boyd, Katie Boyd; great-grandchild, Kyleigh Ann Farmer; sisters & brothers-in-law, Sue & Richard Howell, Martha & Larry Turpin, Margaret Keith; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 22, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Goins and Pastor Ronald Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Shelor Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at the funeral home.

Eva Bray Howard

Eva Bray Howard, 103 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2014. She is preceded in death by her husband Kent S. Howard, Sr. She was a native of Tennessee and the daughter of the late George Harrison and Nancy Dalton Bray. She was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. She was employed by VA Tech as an Extension Agent and coordinated programs for Floyd County until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of the Floyd United Methodist Church, and was a charter member of the Floyd County Woman’s Club. She held life membership in Extension Eplison Sigma Phi, a state and national organization, and membership in the Retired Teachers Organization.

Surviving are her son, Kent S. Howard, Jr. of Winchester; daughter & son-in-law, Nancy & Whitney Wagner of Clear Brook; two grandchildren, Teague & Tatsiana Wagner of Stephens City, and Tiffany & Greg Buhrman of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and two great-granddaughters, Eva Jane Buhrman, and Eliza Rae Buhrman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Johnny Ray Marshall




Johnny Ray Marshall, 47 of Willis, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2014. He is preceded in death by his father, John L. Marshall.

He is survived by his mother, Mary R. Marshall of Willis; sister & brother-in-law, Sandra & Timmy Phillips of Indian Valley; brother & sister-in-law, William & Heather Marshall of Washington, D.C.; and nephews, Brandon Phillips, Cole Marshall, and Chase Marshall; Randy Phillips whom he loved like a nephew; and many special friends.
