Carl Buford "Bear" Cox


Carl Buford “Bear” Cox, 84 of Indian Valley, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. He is preceded in death by two brothers, five sisters, 13 brothers-in-law, and four sisters-in-law.

Carl was a professional truck driver for over 40 years. He took great pride in all of his family.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Vada Hollandsworth Cox; sons & daughters-in-law, Lynwood & Janet Cox, Gerald & Dorothy Cox, Ricky & Molly Cox, and Anthony & Julie Cox; daughters & son-in-law, Susan Cox, and Cindy & Zeke Ratcliffe; grandchildren, Miranda (Jamie) Cooper, Ashley (Jamie) Huff, Matthew (Janelle) Cox, Levi (Sabrina) Cox, Trent (Hannah) Cox, Deirdre Hand, Conor (Charline) Hand, Adam Cox, Laura Ratcliffe, Kaci Ratcliffe, and Robert Ratcliffe; 16 great-grandchildren; brother & sister-in-law, Joseph & Glenna Cox; sisters, Muriel Hollandsworth, Kate Phillips, and Minnie Turman; sisters-in-law & brothers-in-law, Linda Cox, Irene Gallimore, Anita Quesenberry, Josephine Alderman, Brenda Howell (Russell), Wanda Grubb (Duayne), Martha Bower (Jimmie), Ren Hollandsworth (Sonja), and Connie Browning.; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Indian Valley Church of God with Rev. Jeff Dalton & Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. Interment will follow in the Hollandsworth Cemetery on Sumpter Road, Indian Valley. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2019 at the church.

Joyce H. Duncan


Joyce H. Duncan, 66 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents, Reginald & Sylvia Rorrer Hancock; and brother, Marvin Hancock.

She is survived by her husband, Steven Duncan; daughter & son-in-law, Heather & Stephen Higgs; grandchildren, Dustin Higgs, Stephanie Higgs, Dominick Higgs, Hunter Higgs, and Caitlyn Higgs; brother & sister-in-law, Samuel & Brenda Hancock; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the Topeco Church of the Brethren with Pastor Jason Pratt officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Peggy Anne Sowers Howard


Peggy Anne Sowers Howard, 78 of Radford, passed away on November 3, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, Granville M. “Marty” Howard; father & mother, Albert Lee & V. Mae Sowers; and brother, Willie Lee Sowers.

Peggy was a member of the Radford Church of Christ and a graduate of Radford High School.

She is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Greg & Sandy Howard and Tony & Pam Howard; daughter & son-in-law, Diane & Brian Stanley; grandchildren, Brandon Stanley & girlfriend Hailey Hobbs, Debra & Jared Bourne, Allyson Howard & boyfriend Ryan Blose, Hollee Howard, Grayson Howard, Alex Howard, and Autumn Howard; great-grandchildren, Brody Stanley, Meredith Wills, and Henry Blose; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Radford Church of Christ with Mr. John Croft and Mr. Rudolph Shelburne officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
