Nolen Eart Goad



Nolen E. Goad, 77 of Floyd, passed away unexpectedly on February 26, 2019.

Nolen was a beloved father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He retired from the Lynchburg Foundry where he was an active Union member. He served in the Army and was a lifelong democrat. He served many years on the Electoral Board in Floyd and volunteered with RSVP. He loved spending time on the lake fishing with his family.

He is survived by his son, Eric Goad; daughter & son-in-law, Angela & Michael Duncan; grandchildren, Bethany Duncan & Fiancé Michael Delp and Hunter Duncan; sisters, Norell (Pete) Mason, and Merleen Reese; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019 at the funeral home. Interment will be held in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019.

James Ewell Harmon


James Ewell Harmon, 91 of Floyd, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 in his home surrounded by family.

Jim was born in Willis, VA to Edgar & Mary Harmon on June 9, 1927. He married Hilda Simpson on July 2, 1949. They raised four children above Harmon’s Store in Willis which Jim owned and operated from 1953 to 1978. He served on the Floyd County School Board for a number of years. After selling the store, Jim and his son, Jamie, distributed Esso and then Exxon oil and gas under the name of Harmon Oil Company. He eventually sold the business to B. Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda Harmon; son & daughter-in-law, Jamie & Debbie Harmon; daughters & sons-in-law, Sunny & Bob Popp, Cappy & Tommy Spangler, and Jolee & John Crawford; grandchildren, Angie (Tuff) Nichols, Jessica (Adam) Stebar, Ashley (Chad) Scott, Katie (Mike Disch) Popp, Maggie (Scooter Thweatt) Popp, Nathan Popp, Ben (Kristin) Johnson, Caleb (Rhiannon) Johnson, Conner (Jess) Johnson, Dakota (Tate) Stinnett, Austin (Katelyn) Spangler, Travis (Kristin) Crawford, Amanda Crawford, and Tucker (Nicole) Crawford; great-grandchildren, Shane, Shawn, and Emma Nichols, Chloie, Sydney, and Jemmasen Stebar, Hannah, Macy, and Ellie Scott, Harmon Disch, Karoline, Bjorn, and Lars Johnson, Maebel Johnson, Layla, Emry, and Penelope Johnson, Bella and Aspen Stinnett, Dayson Crawford, Alyssa Crawford, Sage and Wilder James Crawford.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Restvale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Sylvia Rorrer Hancock


Sylvia Rorrer Hancock, 92 of Floyd, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Hancock; son, Marvin Hancock; and daughter-in-law, Lois Hancock. Also preceding her in death were her parents, McKinley & Cora Rorrer; sisters, Recie Turner and Reva Belcher; brothers, Ervin, Claude, and Leonard Rorrer.

Survivors include her son & daughter-in-law, Samuel & Brenda Hancock; her daughter & son-in-law, Joyce & Steve Duncan; grandchildren, Stephanie (Steve) Link, Tracy Hancock, Stephen Hancock, Billy (Erica) Hancock, Susan (Ray) Sowers, Amanda Montgomery, and Heather (Steve) Higgs; 21 great-grandchildren; 9 great great-grandchildren; and brother, Sebert (Jean) Rorrer.

We would like to thank hospice and her main caregivers, Morganne McDowell and Brenda Hancock for the wonderful care they gave our mother in her final days.

Funeral service will be held at 2: 00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jason Pratt officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the funeral home.

Alma Phillips Ratliff


Alma Phillips Ratliff, 87 of Floyd, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, “Buzz” Ratliff; and son-in-law, Bobby Tate.

She was the head supervisor for 41 years at DonKenny. She was a member of Floyd Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters & son-in-law, Kim Ratliff Schwenk (Stephen) and Hilda Tate; grandchildren, Ricky Gillespie, Tammy Bowman (Steve), Tracy Moore (Christal), and Teresa  Hunt (Wayne); great-grandchildren; and sister, Ila Thomas.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Jacksonville Cemetery with Pastor Angela Carr officiating.
