Chlonetia Martin Thompson




Chlonetia Martin Thompson, 92 of Floyd, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015.  She was predeceased by her sister, Treatise Webb; brothers, Elvin Martin and Benson Martin.

Remembered for her extraordinary cooking, she loved preparing meals for family and especially taking food to workers for her husband at the station and the hayfield.  She was loving and devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren.  Famously known as the “cake Lady” in her church family.   

She is survived by the love of her life for 76 years, Arlie R. Thompson,  whom she has been  married to for 73 years; children, Dale Thompson (Liz), Brenda Thompson Weeks, R.J. Thompson (Korene), Linda Diane T. Midkiff (Randal), Danny Thompson (Martha); sister, Mavin Steele (Jack); brother-in-law, Elmer L. Webb;sister-in-law, Corinne Martin;Seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 3, 2015  at Salem Primitive Baptist (Head of the River) with Elder Carl Terry and Elder Larry Hollandsworth officiating.  Interment will follow in the Restvale Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Mary Linda Boothe



Mary Linda Boothe, 65, of Meadows of Dan, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester A. and Bessie Marie Hylton. She is survived by her daughter, Angie Boothe; brother, William Henry Boothe; and her pet cats, Budger and Squealer.
Funeral Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 29, 2015 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dale Belcher and Pastor Marcus Wood officiating. The interment will follow in the Hylton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Mamie Phillips Vest


Mamie Phillips Vest of Floyd and Roanoke Virginia, entered into eternal rest November 19, 2015.  A native of Floyd County, she was born August 9, 1938, the youngest child of the late Deputy Sheriff William Lewis Phillips and Cordova Quesenberry Phillips. She was predeceased by her brother William Morris Phillips and wife Freeda , a sister Clarah Vae Phillips, brother-in-law, Elwood Mabry,  and infant brother and  beloved great nephew, David Schlosser.
Left to honor her memory are her best friend and husband of 56 years, Earl Stewart Vest.  She is survived by a great love of her life, granddaughter Sedona Marguerite Hanks who brought much joy and pride.  Surviving are sister and brother-in-law George and Ruth Heafner of Greensboro NC, Helen Mabry of Cherryville, NC;  sister-in-law, Barbara Vest of Maryland.  Also surviving are nieces Rebecca Heafner Schlosser (Michael) Greensboro, NC and Cathy Mabry Clonninger (Alan), Dallas, NC; nephews, Douglas Mabry (Tami) Cherryville NC, Michael Phillips(Barbara), Christiansburg, Stephen Phillips (Patricia), Christiansburg, Terry Phillips (Wanda), Eggleston and Jeffrey Phillips, (Jill) , Christiansburg.  Also surviving are many great- nieces, great- nephews and cousins.
Mamie enjoyed a long and vibrant career in advertising/design/public relations in Roanoke.  Her art career was launched with an internship at Delmar Studios in Charlotte. Returning to the area to marry the love of her life, she worked as a graphic artist for Roanoke Engraving followed by employment as Director of Art Services at Brand Edmonds Advertising.  At age 28, she established her independent business, Mamie Vest Associates.  In addition to her agency work, she served for several years as a legislative aide in both the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates.
She was appointed by Governor Linwood Holton to the Consumer Credit Study Commission; by Governor John Dalton to the Advisory Committee on Furnishing and Interpreting the Executive Mansion; and by Governor George Allen to the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. She served as Chairman of the Roanoke City Arts Commission and was an active member of the Roanoke City Sigh Ordinance Committee.  She also served as the Roanoke Valley Coordinator for the Virginia Bicentennial Commission.
During the 1970’s ‘80s and 90s , she created and directed advertising for over 80 local, state and federal Republican political campaigns.   She received the American Advertising Federation Silver Medal Award in Roanoke for contributions to the industry and community, the first woman to receive the honor in Virginia.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 22, 2015, followed by interment at Jacksonville Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 prior to the service.  Mamie requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad, PO Box 257, Floyd, VA. 24091 or a charity offering aid to those in need. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven; A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.

Monroe G. Gallimore



Monroe G. Gallimore, age 90, of Indian Valley, passed away Saturday, November 14, 2015.

Monroe is preceded in death by his wife Mabel Cox Gallimore; parents Hosie and Lizzie Phillips Gallimore.

He is survived by his nephews, Hiley Gallimore, Ramsey Gallimore and wife Lucille , and Bruce Gallimore; brothers-in-law,  Carl Cox, and  Joseph Cox; sisters-in-law, Muriel Hollandsworth, Kate Phillips, and Minnie Turman.  

A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery with Rev. Vinton Quesenberry officiating.

Julius Early "J.E." Bolt



Julius Early “J.E.” Bolt, 79, of Willis, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Oka Bolt, brothers, Hugh Bolt and Harold Bolt.

 He loved riding his Harley, talking with his CB buddies, his church family and he enjoyed farming.

 He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ilene Bolt; his dog Amos “Mussie”; sons and spouses, Steven Bolt, Scott and Erica Bolt, Stewart and Jennifer Bolt, Daniel and Stacie Bolt and Samuel Bolt and friend Angela; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother and spouse, Al and Sonia Bolt; sister, Helen Bolt Chun; 14 nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Durward and Nancy Beasley, Michael and BeBe Landsman.

 Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 16, 2015 at Maberry Funeral Home with the  Rev. Dr. Allen Cherry and the  Rev. Ricky Atkins officiating with interment in the Mabry Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Maberry Funeral Home.

John C. Gearhart, Jr.


John C. Gearhart, Jr., 95 of Floyd, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2015.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Magadeline Gearhart. 
John served in the US Army in the 1st Calvary Division as a Rifleman.  He was a faithful member at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, an avid hunter, fisherman and musician.  He enjoyed playing several instruments and attended the Friday Night Jamboree
He is survived by daughters, Maxine Kelly (Robert), Kathy Kidwell (David); sons, Earl Gearhart (Betty Jo), Johnny Gearhart (Sharon), Gary Gearhart (Christine); grandchildren, April Cochran, Doug Gearhart(Kena), Troy Gearhart, Maggie Gearhart, Carrie Hackett (Curtis), Kim Jackson (Mathew), Tracie Geiger(Bobby), Joel Benson (Beatrice); close friend, Ruth Weeks; brother, Gene Gearhart; sisters, Betty Jo Stockley, Helen Guthrie; several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren with Pastor Marvin Wade, Rev. Richard Thomas and Pastor Roy Turpin officiating . Interment will follow at Beaver Creek Cemetery with Military Rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post # 127.  Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Maberry Funeral Home
