Effie Cox Higgs



Effie Cox Higgs, 92 of Willis, passed away February 26, 2016.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Pouge and Jessie Cox; husband, Troy A. Higgs; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Higgs; brothers, Russell Cox, Coleman Cox, Phillip Cox; sisters-in-law, Eunice Cox, Bessie Cox; brother-in-law, Esker Wade.

 She is survived by her sons and daughter, Jewell Higgs, Douglas and Brenda Higgs and Dianne Criner; brothers and sister-in-law,  Bernard Cox, Allen & Geneva Cox; sisters and brother-in-law, Reba Wade and Glenda & Arnold Dehart; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren.
 She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all that knew her.
 Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Kenny Wurzburger officiating, with interment at Capt. George Quesenberry Cemetery.  Family will receive friends 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Lucy Howard Hale



Lucy Howard Hale was called home Saturday February 20, 2016, while in  the presence of her loving and devoted sons, Vergil and Roy, beloved daughter and granddaughters , Betty, Shian, Chelsea, daughter-in-law, Mae Hale and devoted caregiver, Cheryle Barrett.

 Lucy was a longtime active member of the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church.  Her and her late husband George enjoyed working with children and drove a church bus full of grandchildren and neighborhood children to services.  Lucy and George were responsible for many people hearing the Lord’s word.  One of Lucy’s greatest joys was seeing her entire family in church
 Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Nellie Jewell Howard; loving and devoted  husband, George Tyler Hale; daughter Schelena Cox ; beloved  granddaughter, Kerrie Cox Goad; sisters, Stella Kozar, Melba Kozar, Shirley Reed, Sandra Gibson, Maxine Miller; brothers, Charlie Howard, Early Ray Howard.
 She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Vergil and Wanda  Mae Hale, Charlie Roy Haley, Carlton Leo Haley; daughters and sons-in-law, Dixie Tolley and Pete, Wanda Culverhouse, Melita Stuart and Sonny  and Bettie and Eric Frazier; sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Richard Caldwell; sisters-in-law and spouses,  Francis and Galen Huff, Etheline and Milton Duncan; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; special friends, Judy Dickerson, Richard Standford,  Dovie Jordan  Clinton Price and special companion “Scruffy”.
 Graveside service will be held at 12:30 Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at the Hale Cemetery with Pastor David Hurd officiating.  Family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to Noon, Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church prior to the service.

 A special acknowledgement to Pastor David Hurd and wife Debbie.  Lucy and George considered them as their children.

Irvin Wayne Vest

Irvin Wayne Vest, 86 of Roanoke, formerly of Floyd County, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Louella Vest.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Corrine Peters Vest; twin daughters, Darlene Vest of Roanoke and Charlene and husband Daniel Hayth of Troutville; one grandson Justin and wife Erica Hayth of Roanoke; one great granddaughter, Skyler Hayth; one brother, Billy Vest of Radford.
He served in the Army in the Korean War.  He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, gardening and working on his farm.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating with interment in the Vest Cemetery with Military Rites by the Army National Guard.  Family will receive friends 11:00 a.m.  to 1:00 p.m.,   prior to the service.

Hubert Lee Sutphin


Hubert Lee Sutphin, our loving father, went to be with his heavenly father, Jesus Christ, his wife Virginia, his grandson, Joshua Sutphin, son-in-law, Dennis Hamm, and special nephew, Donnie Sutphin, on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at the age of 87. 
He is survived by his children, Barbara Hamm, Vera & William Sutphin, Mary & Ricky Surrantt, Roger Sutphin, Bobby & Lori Sutphin, Randall Sutphin; grandchildren, Richard Hamm, Robert & Shea Hamm, Sandy & Dennis Huff, Brian Sutphin, Shane & Laura Burnette, Greg Thomas, Brandon & Tabatha Thomas, Cody Sutphin; sisters, Violet Brown, Elvia Moles; brothers, Elmer Sutphin , Lonnie & Hazel Sutphin; nine, great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Joyce Greene and Co-Pastor Ronnie Greene officiating,  with interment in the Alderman Cemetery.   Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Evie Board Wilson


Evie Board Wilson, 94 of Check, departed this life on Tuesday, February 9, 2016.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin Trig and Claudia Poff Board; husband, Charles E. “Charlie” Wilson; son, Melvin E. Wilson; sisters, Attaway Conner & Vennie Peters; brother, John Henry Board.
She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Charles Linwood & Carolyn M. Wilson; grandchildren, Charles L. Wilson, Jr., and James E. Wilson and his wife Karen.
Funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m.,  Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Hebron Quesenberry officiating with a private burial at Wilson Cemetery at a later date.  Family will receive friends 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, February 12, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Cletis Lawson Thomas


Cletis Lawson Thomas, 83, of Floyd, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, February 7, 2016.  He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Macie Thomas  and  brother and sister-in-law,  Laurel Edward and Hazel  Thomas.

He served in the Army as a medic from November 1952 to November 1954 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.  He also was a long time member of the Little River Baptist Church.  He will be missed very much by his loving wife, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean Yates Thomas; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan D. and Mary Ellen Harmon; grandson, Josiah Harmon; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Bill) and Marie Thomas; sisters and brothers –in-law, Claudine and Chester Sowers, Barbara and Sheldon Vest; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. , Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Cecil Brown officiating with Military Rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127 with Interment to follow in the Wilson Family Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6:00pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Noah Lee Akers


Noah Lee Akers, 57 of Floyd, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Friday, February 5, 2016.  He was well loved by his family and cared for his mother until her death.
He is survived by his sisters & brother-in-law,  Alice Altizer, Katie Sutphin, Brenda & Larry Hale, Phyllis Akers; brothers & sisters-in-law,  Roy Akers, Henry ”James” &Dallas Akers, Denton & Dianne Akers , Steve & Shelby Akers , George & Jeanette Akers, Wayne & Faye Akers;  numerous nieces & nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 8, 2016 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Wesley Conner officiating. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. prior to the service.

George William Shelor



George William Shelor of Floyd, Va passed away on February 3, 2016 after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his wife, Doris Elaine Scales. He is survived by his children, Beth Shumaker (Bruce) Richmond; Carl Shelor (Cherie), and David Shelor; both from Floyd. There are five grandchildren and one great grandchild. George was a retired farmer and millwright and served in the Army during WWII. A memorial service will be held on May 14, 2016 at the Floyd VFW Post 7854, 186 Epperly Mill Rd., Floyd, VA 24091 at 11:00 a.m. Special thanks go out to the staff members at Warm Hearth in Blacksburg where George resided for the past few years.
