William Marvin Kemp

William Marvin Kemp, 78 of Floyd, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Kemp; parents, Clarence & Evelyn Kemp; and sister, Pearl Bowman.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Flora Kemp; son & daughter-in-law, Jeffrey & Tamiko Kemp; and grandchildren, Alsu, Ivan and Timothy Kemp.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stewart Childress officiating. Interment will follow in the Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church, 2102 Childress Road, Willis, VA 24380.

Joyce Ray Huff


Joyce Ray Huff went home to be with the Lord on Dec 17, 2022. He finished the cancer battle well with faith in God’s plan for him. He is seeing the face of Jesus and reunited with the love of his life, Jean.

Joyce worked at Fabric Cutters in Floyd as a young man until its closing. He then worked at MicroMetrics until he retired. He served his church, Calvary Baptist, as a Deacon and in numerous other capacities. He raised cattle on his farm. He enjoyed woodworking and created many treasured pieces. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to others who needed his help repairing or building things.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents, Curby Lee and Gaynell Huff; and his siblings, Paul Huff and Shirley Sutphin.

He is survived by his children, Vicki Long (Dale), Julie Long (Daniel), and Daniel Huff (Crystal). He was blessed with five grandchildren who were the apple of his eye, Thomas (Jessica), Matthew, Sarah, Lindsey, and Dylon. He is survived by six brothers and sisters, Jordan Huff (Bea), Janie Stevers, Caroline Rue (Bob), Ann Choudhury (Sal), James Huff (Pat), and Silas Huff (Diane). He had so many cousins, nieces and nephews that he enjoyed and loved.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Agee and Rev. Graham Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. 

The family would like to thank the kind nurses and care professionals of Residential Hospice. The support and care that Susan, Jennifer, Tammy and Jenna provided is so greatly appreciated.

Donald Timothy Spence

 

Donald Timothy Spence, 51 of Stuart, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2022. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Roy E. & Hassaba Spence and Kenneth Ray Mabery; uncles, Larry Ray Mabery and Kenneth Thompson; and step-father, Douglas Dee Moore.

He is survived by his mother, Linda Gay Moore; father, Wayne A. Spence; grandmother, Kathleen Hylton Mabery; brother, Rick Spence (Mendy); twin-sisters, Kayden Chevey Anderson and Riley Ray Anderson; uncles, Terry Mabery (Debora Keith) and Michael Mabery;  aunt, Beatrice Thompson; nephew, Jared Spence (Mary); niece, Abigail Spence (Dylan Vest); and great-nieces, Brinley Spence and Aria Spence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Brent Carrick and Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in Willis Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Kenneth Houston Beckner

 

Kenneth Houston Beckner, 72 of Roanoke, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. He is preceded in death by his father, Houston M. Beckner; and brother, Donald Beckner.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Conner Beckner; daughter, Susan Meredith (D.K.); son, Rick Beckner (Chris); seven grandchildren; mother, Ida Bolt; sisters, Wanda Hale (Tommy) and Marsha Brown; sister-in-law, Becky Beckner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2022 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Buchanan officiating. Interment will follow in Restvale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Edna O. Harman Jarrell

 


On December 13, 2022, Edna O. (Harman) Jarrell died peacefully and went home to be with the Lord. Edna was born in Floyd County Virginia on June 16, 1931, to Stuart and Dada (Weeks) Harman.

She graduated from Willis High School in Willis, Virginia. She was a member of Baywood Wesleyan Church in Galax, Virginia. She enjoyed attending church and singing the traditional hymns. Edna had a special talent for sewing, crocheting and raising African Violets. Spending time with family and friends was a great joy to her.

Edna is preceded by her parents, Stuart and Dada (Weeks) Harman; husband, "Roy" Nelson Jarrell; son, Roy N. Jarrell, Jr and siblings, Sammy Harman, Billy Joe Harman, Virgie Nester, as well as 17 half brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her children, Brenda J. Young (William) of Salisbury, Nancy E. Mason (Ralph) of Glen Burnie, Julie Jarrell Sharma (Roop) of Hanover and Ronald B. Jarrell of Virginia; six grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022 in the Topeco Cemetery with Rev. Randy Watts officiating.

William Michael "Mike" Stump

 

William Michael “Mike” Stump, 67 of Copper Hill, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2022. He is preceded in death by his father, Newton Hoover Stump; and sisters, Katherine Yopp & Deborah Stump.

He is survived by his mother, Norma C. Hill Martin; children, Anton Stump (Maura) & Sidney Hossey (Bryan); grandchildren, Robert, Aida & Colleen Stump and Ethan & Aiden Hossey; sisters, Charlotte Goodwine & Rebecca Fell; and soul mate, Virginia Gail Bailey.

A private funeral service will be held.

Effie Mae Criner, 93 of Roanoke, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2022. She is preceded in death by her husband, Vivian Criner; granddaughter, Shannon Michelle Criner; parents, Rollie & Ocie Moore.

She is survived by her sons, Julian R. Criner Sr., Marlin G. Criner (Teresa), Carlin D. Criner (Lynn); grandchildren, Chelsea Criner, Heather Criner, Julian R. Criner Jr., Carrie Criner, Stephen Criner; brothers, Kirby Moore and Roy Moore (Linda).  

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at the Showalter Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating.

Alton "Dunk" Neal Duncan


 

Alton “Dunk” Neal Duncan, 73 of Indian Valley, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert & Ella Duncan; brothers, Paul & Tony Duncan; and mother-in-law, Irene Willard.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mayola Duncan; children and spouses, Melissa & David Lineberry, Shannon & Rodney Midkiff, Audra & Jody Hughes, Alton & Judy Duncan II, Nicholas & Angela Duncan and Bobby Gillenwalters; 16 grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren; his beloved fur baby, Kangee Irene and a special sister-in-law, Linda Duncan.

A memorial service was held Friday, December 2, 2022 at New Harvest Ministries with Rev. John Leek, Rev. Roy Bentley and Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.

The family would like to say a special thanks to the nurses and caregivers at Good Samaritan Hospice, Danielle Ogle, NP and Emily Turner, NP at Carilion Clinic Family Practice in Floyd, Virginia.

Nita Dawn Akers

 

Nita Dawn Akers, 80 of Floyd, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022. She is preceded in death by her parents, Delmer & Ocie Weddle.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Grover Harmon Akers; sons and daughters-in-law, Timmy & Renee Akers and Terry & Kim Akers; daughter and son-in-law, Shelby & Ricky Bolt;  grandchildren, Renee Conner, Laura Ann & Nick Yopp, Amanda & Will Dulaney, Travis & Ashley Akers, Zach Akers, Zoe Akers & Darien Ogundeji ; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Makenzie, & Cole Dulaney, Chase & Cooper Akers and Zenbriah & Ziamerion Ogundeji; and sisters, Darnell Marshall and Judy Akers.

A private graveside service will be held at Topeco Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.
