Murry Jackson "Jack" Spangler

 



Murry Jackson “Jack” Spangler, 90 of Catonsville, MD, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022. He was born in Floyd County, Virginia on September 16, 1931 to the late Charles & Mary Katherine “Kate” Yopp Spangler. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Bessie Spangler; brother, Charles Spangler; and son-in-law, Mark Branch.

He was a 1948 graduate of Floyd High School and went on to graduate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1953. He served in the United States Army for two years. He worked for Westinghouse Defense Division in Baltimore for 41 years, pioneering and managing the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program for 28 of those years.

In retirement he authored historical books and worked in the Charlestown Retirement Community’s woodshop where he enjoyed making toys for “Toys for Tots.” He enjoyed historical and genealogical research, woodworking and traveling. 

He is survived by his four children, Janet Branch, Gary & Juli Spangler, Karen Black, and David & Lydean Spangler; sister, Marie Spangler; sister-in-law, Barbara Spangler; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd with Rev. Robert McLavey and Rev. Richard Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery with military rites by the Floyd VFW Post #7854 & American Legion Post #127. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Maberry Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toys for Tots, Floyd VFW Post # 7854, American Legion Post # 127 or the charity of your choice.
