Lillian Edith Quesenberry

 

Lillian Edith Quesenberry, 89 of Willis, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Giles and Clona (Huff) Showalter; husband, Buford Quesenberry; son, Jerry Quesenberry; brother, Easley Showalter; and sister, Carrie Duncan.

She is survived by her children, Donna Hall (Eddie), Randy Quesenberry, and Ricky Quesenberry; daughter-in-law, Peggy Quesenberry; sisters, Lorene Marshall and Effie Dalton; grandchildren, Michelle Johnson (Donnie), Johnny Quesenberry (Renee), Daniel Quesenberry (Brittany), Amy Sims (Patrick), Walter Hall (Michelle), and Jenny Hall; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 7, 2022 at the Indian Valley Church of God with Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. The interment will follow at Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Hillsville team at Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care.

Lou Emma Poff

 

Lou Emma Poff, 86, of Floyd, VA went to her heavenly home on Friday, February 4, 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Vesta (Smith) Hungate; and sister, Mary Alice Hungate

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 58 years, W. Clyde Poff; son, W. Ralph Poff (Angela); granddaughter, Shawnee Poff; grandson, Jeremiah Poff (Valerie); step-grandson, Lucas Graham (Kayla); two precious great-granddaughters, Valynn and Jolene Poff.

Lou was a nurse for over 50 years and is most remembered for her kindness and caring for others. She was a cherished member of Grace Baptist Church, where she attended, until her health declined.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Lackey and Pastor Clyde Bishop officiating, Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kathy Hall for her loyal care over the last several years and the staff of Kindred Hospice for all of their care and compassion for the past 22 months.

Manilla Phillips

 

Manilla Phillips, Floyd, VA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at the age of 103 ½.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Maudie Phillips; her first husband, Freeman Phillips; her second husband, Sinkley Phillips; sister, Dallas Turman; brothers, Freeman Phillips, Golden Phillips and Covie Phillips.

She is survived by her son, Douglas R. Phillips (Shirley) of Indian Valley and grandson, David Phillips, of Blacksburg, VA. Also surviving are her nieces, Reda Phillips Quesenberry (Wayne), Peggy Turman Ogle (Wayne), Irene Moore (Junior), Judith Huff, Elaine Bostwick (Don) and Glennice Martin; nephews, Mike Turman (Wanda), Glennis Phillips (Mary), Delwood Phillips (Nancy); and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2022 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Poston, Rev. Joe Cox and Rev. Mike Bond officiating. Interment will follow in the Douglas R. Phillips Cemetery, Indian Valley Road Willis, VA.

Visitation for family and friends will be held 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

I would like to thank the nurses and staff at Skyline Nursing and Rehab for their excellent care of my mother. A special thank you to Danielle Ogle for her visits at Roanoke Memorial Hospital while she was there and the nursing home afterwards. I appreciated her expertise when she gave updates.

 

Juanita Mae Adkins Hollandsworth

 

Juanita Mae Adkins Hollandsworth, 79 of Floyd, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Conway & Della Mae Mills Adkins; brothers, Gary C. Adkins, Ronald D. Adkins, and James W. Adkins; and one nephew.

She is survived by her husband, Foster Hollandsworth; daughter, Tracy L. Maraney; granddaughter, Payton Taylor Maraney; grandson, Jaden Foster Maraney; sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria & Leonard Holmes, Deborah & Barry Collins, and Kimberly & Sonny Nester; nine nieces, and four nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at the Indian Valley Church of God with Rev. Kenneth Poston and Rev. Mike Bond officiating. Interment will follow at Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Carrie Lou Davis Casteel

 

Carrie Lou Davis Casteel, 83 of Floyd, passed away on January 29, 2022.

She was born in Clay County, Kentucky on January 29, 1939 and lived in Floyd, Virginia for most of her life. She remained loyal to her Kentucky roots but loved her hometown of Floyd. Carrie and her husband Jim shared a love of Virginia Tech Basketball, the Great Oaks Country Club, and travel – having visited every state in the country, often alongside their lifelong friends. Carrie took immense pride in her home and enjoyed the company of the birds, deer and other critters who would visit the special piece of Floyd that she and Jim built together. Carrie served on the Floyd County Board of Elections for many years and was a long-time member of Floyd United Methodist Church.

Carrie was preceded in death by her dear husband of 62 years, James Warner Casteel Sr. and her parents, Charles Reed and Betsy Clark Goode. Survivors include her children James Jr. (Donna) Casteel of Goodlettesville, TN; Paula (Keith) Bolte of Blacksburg VA; and Clark (Amy) Casteel of Danville, VA. Her grandchildren John (Kristen) Casteel; Margaret Casteel; Juli Layne; Taylor (Lauren) Bolte; Ethan Casteel; and Jacob Casteel as well as five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Whitlow (Stewart) of Portsmouth VA; special niece Emily (Erik) Carl of Suffolk VA; and her very special Kentucky cousins, James Ronnie Johnson, Charles Johnson, and Betsy June Carroll. 

Carrie was a wonderful mother, granny, aunt, cousin and friend who had a wonderful smile and infectious laugh that her family and friends will long remember and cherish.

A private graveside service will be held in the Jacksonville Cemetery. 

The family offers a special thank you to her fantastic caregivers over the last several years, Wanda Lang and the staff at Commonwealth Senior Living and Kindred Hospice. 

In lieu of flowers, Carrie would like it if you said a special thanks to all the caregivers you know, got outside to plant things and feed the birds. But most importantly, spend some extra special time with your family telling stories and laughing. 

Roger Neil Hollandsworth

 

 

Roger Neil Hollandsworth, 64 of Floyd, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Rowena Albert Hollandsworth; brother, Don Wayne Hollandsworth; father-in-law, Elvin S. Reed.

Roger loved the Floyd County community. He was a graduate of Floyd County High School and Virginia Tech. He was an avid fan of Tech Athletics and FCHS Basketball. He worked to support the Chance Harman Memorial Fund. He was a life member of over 40 years of the Floyd County Rescue Squad where he was the treasurer for most of that time. He was the owner of the Floyd Xpress Market for 33 years.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jennifer R. Hollandsworth; son, Dustin N. Hollandsworth (Sabrina Schulze and her children, Shauna, Garrett, Kylie, Wyatt, Arick); granddaughters, Lilah and Emberly Hollandsworth; brothers & sisters-in-law, Ronald & Geraldine Hollandsworth and Randall & Reva Hollandsworth; uncle, Bo Albert (Audrey); mother-in-law, Velma R. Reed; brother-in-law, Darrel Reed (Helen); nieces, Stephanie Nelson (Dale), Hilary Hedrick (Patrick), & Amanda Hollandsworth; nephews, Zach Hollandsworth, Brannon Reed; great-niece, Averie Nelson; great-nephews, Brody Nelson, Corvin Hedrick; and special friends, Wayne Goff and Micky Hatcher. Roger's special friends are endless and each were so important to him.     

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the Topeco Church of the Brethren with Brian Harman officiating. The interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. Roger was a casual type person and his family requests everyone dress casual for his service.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, 2022 and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2022 at Maberry Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 257, Floyd, VA 24091.  

 

Walter Kenneth "Kenny" Koontz, Jr.

 

Walter Kenneth “Kenny” Koontz, Jr., 66 of Floyd, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Kenneth Koontz, Sr. and Elizabeth Gross Koontz.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Starkell Koontz; son, Walt William Koontz; 4 grandchildren, sister, Betty Lou Ross; nephew, Aaron Ross; niece, Beth Scott; step-children, Amanda Mills, Michael Mills, Debra Mills.

 No public visitation or service will be held.

Patricia "Patsy" Lynn Smith Altis

 

Patricia “Patsy” Lynn Altis, 69 of Copper Hill, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 22, 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Beulah Smith; granddaughter, Halie Yaunsem; sisters & brothers-in-law, Betty Louise “Tootsie” Smith, Jackie & S.L. Spangler, Calvin Lee Roberson, Bobby Walters and Jack Reynolds; brother, Doug Smith; niece, Andrea Smith; and nephews, Kenneth Walters and Tim Reynolds.  

Patsy always greeted everyone with a smile.  She was devoted to her husband, children and absolutely adored her grandchildren.  She was known for her generosity and loving nature. 

Pat was a mail carrier for the USPS for 22 years in the Copper Hill area of Floyd County.   She was cherished and loved by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Wayne Altis; son & daughter-in-law, Adam & Heather Altis; daughter & son-in-law, Ashley & Joe Yaunsem; step-son, Allen Altis; grandchildren, Kalyan and Amaleah Altis, Irelyn, Rafe and Tabius Yaunsem, Zayne Altis; great-grandchildren, Kehlina and Kayden Altis; siblings, Helen “Tommy” Roberson, Margaret “Totsy” Walters, Charles Smith (Gracie), Brenda Reynolds, Steve Smith; sisters-in-law, Christine Smith, Bonnie Johnson(J.B.), Sylvia Mullins; brothers-in-law, David Altis, Dave & Charlotte Crouch;  many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Private Family celebration honoring her life will be held at a later date.

Nancy Proffit Shelor

 

Nancy Proffit Shelor, born April 11, 1920 died January 15, 2022 age 101. Nancy was the third of five daughters of Winston Kelly Proffit and Esther Brame. Nancy was born and raised in Floyd, Virginia, her home for life. She attended Mary Baldwin College. Nancy and her husband William Henry Shelor, who predeceased her, had three children; Anne Shelor Hubbard, Rebecca Dudley Shelor, and William Henry Shelor, Jr. She was graced with seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The Shelor family members were active in the Floyd Presbyterian Church where Nancy taught Sunday school. She was a founding member of the Floyd Woman’s Club and also belonged to the D.A.R. Nancy was committed to the Floyd Community and took part in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts and occasionally was a substitute teacher at Floyd High School. She and Bill loved to entertain friends and family and they also enjoyed travel. Graveside services will be conducted at a later date.

 

Annie Betty Holden

Annie Betty Crowe Holden, 92 of Floyd, departed this earthly home Tuesday, January 18, 2022. She is predeceased by her husband, Nathan E. Holden (“Peewee”); parents, Jake & Albertha Crowe; four brothers, Bernice Crowe, Alfred Crowe, Arlie Crowe, and Deitz Crowe; and grandson Lucas M. Holden

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, J.C. Holden (Carolyn), Isaac Holden (Gail Hoback), Elwood Holden (Cathy), Larry Holden, and Milton Holden; grandchildren, Dixie, April, Sunshine, Charlie, and Paige; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Toni, Isaac, Sara, Rachel, Elizabeth, Eli, and Holden; great-great-grandchildren, Raylon, Raegan, Levi, Luke, Jaxon, Harrison, Kadesh, Finley, Rayden, Emerson, and John. Along with her cat Snowball

Annie spent most of her life as a devoted wife and mother. She was known for her large beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She worked hard and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She loved the Lord and enjoyed attending church. Her home was always filled with good food and she was the happiest when all five of her boys were home at the same time. She was ready to meet the Lord and talked of it often.

A very special thank you to Elwood and Cathy, along with Larry for making sure she was able to stay home and passed knowing she was indeed loved and treasured.
