Daisy Marshall McPeak


Daisy Marshall McPeak, 89 of Indian Valley, passed away on January 7, 2019.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Cavilla Herbert McPeak; son, Stevie McPeak; parents, Floyd A. & Bertie E. Wright Marshall; brothers, Alvin Marshall, Kenneth Marshall, Ezra Marshall, and Fountain Marshall; and sister, Mollie Marshall.

She is survived by five nieces; one nephew; and many relatives and friends.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery with Rev. Vinton Quesenberry and Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. – Noon prior to the service at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Don Hansel Harter, 82 of Woodlawn, formerly of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Claude & Bessie Harman Harter.

Loretta Duncan Miller


Loretta Duncan Miller, 78 of Riner, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie B. & Vina Elizabeth Dulaney Duncan; brothers, Jasper Duncan, Hasker Duncan, Esley Duncan, Alpha Duncan, and Roland Duncan; sisters, Esma Akers, Alma Hammond, and Vina Drucella Duncan (infant); and brother-in-law, Loman Smith.

Loretta loved her children and was known as “mom” to many. She worked for the DMV and loved gardening, crafting, crocheting, and sewing. She was an excellent seamstress. She had a love for antiques. She will be missed by many.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Sonny Lee Miller; children and their spouses, Pamela Ingram (Robert), Garret Miller (Sally), Nathan Miller (Tracey), Lydia Thomas (Michael), and Gregory Miller (Sharon); grandchildren, Devon Lunsford, Ethan Miller, Treavor Miller, Stella Miller, Simon Thomas, Jessica Harman, Jonathan Miller, Kerrie Miller, India Eanes, and Philip Stuart; great-grandchildren, Dalton Thomas, Madison Thomas, Ezekiel Eanes, and Landon Stuart; special sister, Lorraine Smith; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved pet, Sundrop.

Funeral service will be held at Noon on Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stanley “Shake” Smith. Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. - Noon prior to the service.

Alreda W. Southall

On January 2, 2019, Alreda White Southall, 92, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, formerly of Indian Valley, Virginia, passed away.  Alreda was born on November 25, 1926, in Indian Valley, to the late Gracie and Leonard A. White.  She earned her Master’s Degree in Business from North Carolina State University and then went on to own an Antique Store in North Carolina.  While living in Raleigh, Alreda was very involved in many community activites and her church, The Church of Christ.  She enjoyed gardening, doll dealing & collecting, and art collecting.

Alreda was predeceased by her devoted husband, Lt. Col. Russell M. Southall, a decorated American Hero, and her cherished son, Leonard Southall.   She is survived by her beloved sisters, Eunice Green and Hazel Perdue; and many nieces & nephews.  She was infamous for her beautiful smile.

Graveside service will be held at Noon on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery with Rev. Joseph Cox officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. prior to the service at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Emma Mae Bailey Moles


Emma Mae Bailey Moles, 87 of Willis, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Moles; daughter, Janet Moles; son, Ronnie Moles; sister, Arbutus Stone; granddaughter, Sheila Hunley; great-grandsons, Michael & Cory Hunley; and son-in-law, James Hunley.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Moles; daughters, Diane Hunley and Rebecca Hylton; grandchildren, Lisa Roscoe (David), Amanda Walker (Michael), Vicky Hunley, Lori Hunley, Brad Hunley, Sammy Moles (Ashley), and Lenny Moles (Kelsey); 21 great-grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren; brothers & sister-in-law, Sherman & Rosemary Bailey and David Bailey; sisters, Evaline Sharp and Addalee Sheets; brother-in-law, Alvin Moles (Frances); and many loving friends and family including nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside Service will be held on at Noon on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Harris Cemetery (Buffalo Mountain Road) with Rev. Clyde Bishop officiating.

Janet Higgs Harman


Janet Faye Higgs Harman, 63 of Willis, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018. She is preceded in death by her brother, Roger Higgs; father, Edward Higgs; and brother-in-law, Dale Wade.
Janet loved everyone. She put everyone else first and was thoughtful and always thankful. She had a special bubbly personality.
She is survived by her husband, Maurice Harman; son, Eric Harman; mother, Mary Moran Higgs; sisters, Dana Higgs Kitchens (Bob), Dona Higgs Hall (Chuck), Shirley Higgs Wade; nieces and nephews, Stacey, Avery, Jordon, Austin, Seth, and Jessica; great-nephew, Eli; and extended family and friends.
Funeral Service will be held on at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dale Belcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Phyllis Ora Fleming Keith, 81 of Willis, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018. She is preceded in death by her husband, H.E. Keith, III; and grandson, Wil F. Whitsett.

She was a wonderful mother and loved her children and grandchildren very much.

She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Linda & Kevin Vaughan; sons & daughter-in-law, Glenn & Valerie Whitsett, William Whitsett; step-children, Michael & Sharon Keith, Carol & Michael Poff, Patricia & Johnnie Carter; brothers, Richard Fleming, Keith Fleming; sister, Marlyn Haynes; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service will be held on at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Willis Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Dalton officiating.
