Geneva Wood Belcher, finished her race on April 7 and now rests in victory with her Lord Jesus Christ. Preceding her in death are her husband of 59 years, Carl Isaac Belcher; son-in-law, Ricky Lane Boyd; parents, Arthur and Elree Hancock Wood; and sister, Ardena Wood Pratt.
She is survived by her daughter, Alicia Boyd; sons, Alan and wife Lisa Agee Belcher and David and wife Lee Ann Smith Belcher; sister, Gertrude Wood Vipperman; and brother, Dwight and wife, Sarah Terry Wood. She is also survived by six loving grandchildren, Amy Boyd, Lori Boyd Phillips, Arthur Boyd, Malory Belcher, Isaac Belcher and Brenna Belcher. The twinkle in her eye for the later years of her life are three great-grandchildren, Aiden Boyd, Jonathan Phillips and Emily Phillips. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and their children who adored their sweet “Auntie Gee”.
Born in a hollow atop Rock Castle Gorge, Geneva learned life-values from hard working parents and maintained the work ethic throughout her life. She graduated Valedictorian from Floyd County High School in 1958. She held various private and public positions over her professional career which ended with the rewarding assignment of being the Administrator for the Lions Club of Virginia.
Geneva never allowed her career to interfere with her priority of being a loving wife and mother. She fashioned a wholesome and happy home for her family and always prioritized a commitment to the Bible, the Church and our Savior. She joined Slate Mountain Presbyterian church as a charter member in 1950. Geneva had great appreciation for music and was a natural alto, could play piano and learned to read music from her father at an early age. For a time she carried on his tradition of instructing others in the reading of shape note music, a vanishing art form.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jeff Dalton and Pastor Floyd Dodson officiating. Interment will follow in the Slate Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
