E. Ruth Bonanno (1921 – 2014)
Edna
“Ruth” Hatcher Bonanno was born in Floyd, VA, on August 7, 1921, to Lillian and
Albert G. Hatcher (both deceased) of Floyd. She died peacefully on November 3,
2014, at age 93, in Fredericksburg, VA.
Having
grown up in Floyd, she moved to Washington, DC during the war, where she
married Antonio C. Bonanno. They were both active with the Appalachian Trail
Club for many years, hiking and mountain climbing, and she was well known in
her younger years for her amazing homemade birthday cakes and spectacular
holiday gingerbread “villages,” but she is perhaps best remembered by her
grandchildren for her basketball skill, getting more baskets into the hoop than
the younger folk, even at age 80!
In
the 1960s, she and her family moved to Fredericksburg, VA, where she opened
Bonanno’s Antiques in downtown Fredericksburg (originally known as “Ye Cobble
Shop”) a business she ran for over 40 years with her son, Kenneth Bonanno. She
was also active for many years with the Soroptimist Club of Fredericksburg.
She
is survived by six children – Anthony (Tony) J. Bonanno of Santa Fe, NM;
Antoinette Leonard Matlins of Woodstock, Vermont; Beth Rosine Honeycutt of
Floyd, VA; Kenneth E. Bonanno of Fredericksburg, VA; Karen Ford DeHaas of Land
O’ Lakes, FL; and Kathryn Bonanno Patrizzi of New York City and Flumet, France;
five grandchildren—Dawn Leonard of Spotsylvania, VA; Gregory Duncan of
Leesburg, VA; Christopher Duncan of Marshall, VA; Michael Ford of Rangeley, ME;
and Jeffrey Ford of State College, PA; and 6 great-grandchildren: Ashley Ford,
of Land O Lakes FL; Bryn Huxoll of Spotsylvania, VA; Mason Ford of State
College, PA; Nicholas Duncan and Nathan Duncan of Leesburg, VA; and Joel Duncan
of Marshall, VA; and brother Preston Eugene Hatcher of Roanoke and formerly
of Rocky Mount.
The funeral will be held on Friday, November 7th at 2:00 p.m. at the Topeco Church of the Brethren with J. C. Holden
officiating. Interment will follow at Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive
friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at Maberry Funeral
Home.
