Bartie Jay Staples, 90, of Willis went home to be with his Savior on Thursday, May 21, 2026. He is preceded in death by his parents, Solon Alexander and Ethel Mae Hicks Staples of Hillsville, Virginia.
Jay is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, June Turman Staples; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Renee Staples, of Willis, Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Skip Morgan, of Floyd, Virginia; sister, Nelligene Hollandsworth; brother and sister-in-law, JD and Elsie Turman; grandsons, Joshua Bond, Travis Staples, Jesse Turman, Cody Turman (Amanda); granddaughters, Kristy Staples Lemons, Heather Turman (Randy); great-grandchildren, Ariana Turman (Justin Kemp), Brandi Huff (Dustin), Caleb Turman, Dalanie Turman, Elijah Turman, Faiden Turman, Gemah Turman, Halona Turman, Israel Turman, Josiah Turman, Kamiah Turman, Lariah Turman, Colton Lemons, Brantley Lemons, Ava Hungate, Jonah Bond, Maci Turman, Ravin Turman, Lydia Turman, Hailey Staples, Takoda Staples; great-great-grandchildren, Shelby Staples, McKijah Kemp, Daustin Kemp, Jettison Kemp, Renley Huff, Emryn Huff, Reigner Huff; and special adopted family, Christie Falzone, Melissa Bailey, Lillie Barrett, and Brandon Hungate.
Jay was a character larger than life, a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. His relentless stubbornness, along with the hand of God and countless angels, brought him through impossible circumstances many, many times. A true craftsman and exceptional woodworker, he could make anything with his hands including horse trailers, houses, guitars and turned wooden bowls. Wearing his favorite bibbed overalls, Jay loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and he taught them to hunt, fish, drive, create special items, and basically, all about life but most importantly to attend church. He loved to pick on those he liked, and in his later years, everyone had to watch out that they stayed out of his way while he was on his Hoveround.
Jay loved Jesus and was ready to go home. The reunion happening in heaven with Pa walking, talking, counting his ten fingers and pain-free brings the family much comfort and peace. We would like to express our overwhelming gratitude to all who cared for and patched up PaPa Jay throughout the years, as he ran full throttle. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026 in the Turman-Cruise Cemetery, Dugspur. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026 Maberry Funeral Home Chapel prior to the service.
