Lois Marie Poff

Lois Marie Burks Poff of Glen Arm, MD, passed away in her home with family at her side on October 9, 2025. She was born May 11, 1940 in Kimball, WV, on Burks Mountain. She lived all of her adult life in Floyd County, Virginia, until she moved to Baltimore in 2022. There, she lived in the Glen Meadows Retirement Community.

She was the daughter of the late Alex Burks and Ida Sizemore Burks. Lois was a devoted wife and mother of two children. She loved her family especially her children and tried to raise them to be happy, healthy, and productive individuals. She wanted her children to love God and to follow him.

Lois loved reading, sewing, and traveling. She served the Lord and loved her church family. In her former church she taught Sunday school for 30 years. She was church treasurer for 20 years. At Glen Meadows, she volunteered on the Chapel Committee, enjoyed having dinners with and visiting with her friends, going to Bible study, and playing Thursday night bingo. She also helped make thousands of cookies for a charity bakery and helped make baby blanket Christmas gifts for Santa’s Helpers Anonymous. Giving to others and lending a hand to people in need was something she was always looking to do.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Cathy Poff (husband, Jim Obert) of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Emily Obert (husband, Alan Hejl), and the newest love and joy of her life, great-granddaughter, Nora, all of Ferndale, Michigan. Also surviving is one sister, Maggie Moody; two sisters-in-law, Betty Burks Blevins, and Judy Burks; and special friend and companion, Lewis Beckner and his family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025 in the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Graham Mitchell officiating. A meal will follow the service at the church. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Willis Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

A Memorial service will also be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 in the Chapel at the Glen Meadows Retirement Community located at 11630 Glen Arm Road, Glen Arm, MD 21057. A reception will follow the service.
