Dixie Lee Mitchell

 


Dixie Lee Mitchell, 83, of Willis, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024. She is preceded in death by her son, Lonnie Allen Mitchell.

Dixie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and a devoted Christian.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Otto Richard Mitchell; son, Richard Mitchell (Brenda); daughters, Christine Snider (Lacy, Sr.) and Connie Stollar; grandchildren, Seth, Kay, Jennifer, and Lacy, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Ben, Audrey, Kolbi, and Coleson.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2024 in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Foster Freelin Quesenberry

Foster Freelin Quesenberry, 94, of Indian Valley VA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 24th, 2024. He was preceded in death by infant grandson, Jamie Lafon Alley; and his beloved wife of 69 years, Ledlie Velma Huff Quesenberry.

Foster was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was known far and wide for his uncanny ability to fix anything that had a motor. His self-taught knowledge of cars and trucks, especially his beloved Fords, rivaled any mechanic in the world. He worked diligently for many years keeping various businesses equipment running and was well known to be quick with a good story…most that were true! Foster was a simple man, who never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand. He was larger than life and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to cross paths with him. They truly don’t make them like him anymore.

Left to cherish his memory are his four daughters, Barbara J. Marshall, Lois Morgan (Harold), Melinda Phillips (Kevin), Wanda Alley (Rocky), all of Indian Valley; seven grandchildren, April M. Byrd of Christiansburg, Amanda Duncan (Shawn) of Indian Valley, Misty Johnson (Elliott) of Roanoke, Grace Duncan (Christopher) of Indian Valley, Samuel Phillips (Audrey) of Christiansburg, Isaac Phillips (Kim) of Willis, and Faith Harris (Isaac) of Floyd; seven great-grandchildren, Luke and Lilly Duncan, Nalani and Miles Johnson, Tinley and Ariella Duncan, and Hazel Harris.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Poston and Pastor Rocky Huff officiating. Interment will follow in the Cox Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like extend a special thank you to the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center Staff, Floyd County Rescue Squad, and to Kelly Hill for going above and beyond with her compassionate care. We are grateful to all that visited and called Foster, he cherished everyone.

In lieu of flowers, per Foster’s request, please do something good for someone in need.

Harold Jabe Hollandsworth


Harold Jabe Hollandsworth, 88, of Christiansburg, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 with his family by his side.

He was born on March 27, 1936 to Fred Howard and Augusta Sutphin Hollandsworth, both of whom precede him in death. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin Hollandsworth and Kirby Hollandsworth; and sisters, Delphie Quesenberry, Bertie Cox, and Elizabeth Hollandsworth.

Harold proudly served in the United States Navy.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Phyllis Smith Hollandsworth; loving daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Tommy Smith; grandchildren, Annabelle Smith and Tom Smith; brother, Foster Hollandsworth; special brother-in-law, Mike Smith; and nieces and nephews, Brian, Tracy, Richie, Danny, Becky, Joe, and Lavoy. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2024 in the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Lowell Hopkins, Elder Carlton Brown, and Elder William Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery with Military Rites by the United States Navy Funeral Honors.  The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Uldine Dickerson Duncan


 

Uldine Dickerson Duncan, 99, of Willis, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Albertie Dickerson; son, Joseph Duncan; two brothers and four sisters.

Uldine was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was an avid seamstress and made over one thousand quilts, some of which she donated to the Willis Fire Department to auction off. Uldine was full of kindness and compassion for everyone she met.   

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ellen Maxwell; and grandson, Joseph Maxwell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2024 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor Brian Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Greasy Creek Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Shelby Earl Hilton Jr.

Shelby Earl Hilton Jr., age 77, of Floyd, Virginia formerly of Glade Spring and Russell County passed on Thursday, November 7, 2024.  He was born on December 29, 1946 to the late Shelby Sr. and Bonnie Hilton.  After graduating from MCV Medical College of Virginia, Shelby worked as a clinical pharmacist until his retirement.  He was also a talented pilot, welder, competitive shooter, author and handyman.

Shelby was an active church member and participated in foreign mission trips and many community projects.  In his own words, sitting in a pew is not enough.  Even in his last years after suffering a brain stem stroke he continued to share his faith with others.  He served admirably as President of the Resident Council at Skyline Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past several years.

His love, kindness and humor will be sorely missed by his wife Sandra Hilton of Floyd, Virginia; his children Wade and Misty Hilton of Eldorado, Arkansas; Ben and Susan Hilton and their son Jacob of Belfast; John Johnson and his children Eli and Isabelle of Floyd; Dana Johnson of Fort Washakie, Wyoming; Amy and Robert Ingram of Floyd; his sister Lynn and Scott Conyers of Lyndhurst. He was preceded in death by his son Jonathan Hilton.

The family would like to thank Pastor Paul Robertson and the staff of Skyline Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  Memorial contributions can be made to Skyline Nursing and Rehabilitation Center c/o Activities Department, 237 Franklin Pike SE, Floyd, VA 24091.

Per Shelby's wishes there will be no funeral service.  A memorial will be planned at a later time.

Shirley Christine Quesenberry

Shirley Christine Quesenberry, 87, of Floyd, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, November 8, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Blaine Quesenberry; and her son, Troy Donald Quesenberry.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a pillar of strength, always putting the needs of her loved ones first. She grew up on a farm where she worked hard and had a love of horses and the outdoors. She took pride in her gardening and enjoyed reading.

Shirley is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Vida Quesenberry, Ellen & Jackie Akers, and Vicky & Todd Via; daughter-in-law, Josie Quesenberry; grandchildren, Christy Vaught, Tracy Bartley (Jason), Brenna Rakes (Mike), and Callie Keesee (Chad);great-grandchildren, Tyler Vaught, Dylan Vaught, Kane Whitlock, Brooke Whitlock, Riley Whitlock, and Hollie Rakes; step-great-grandchildren, Mitchell Rakes, Mason Rakes, Matthew Rakes, Maggie Rakes, and Stephen Keesee.

The family will gather privately at a later date to celebrate Shirley’s life and share cherished memories. In the meantime, they invite friends and loved ones to hold Shirley in their hearts, remembering her love of family and joy found in the beauty of the outdoors.

Granville Eugene Spicer, 100, of Galax, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2024. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mae Etta Spicer.

He is survived by his son, Rex Spicer; daughters, Betty Chester, Margaret Morrow and Lucille Goad; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private graveside will be held.

David Lynn Sowers

 


David Lynn Sowers, 64, of Floyd, went to his Heavenly Home on Friday, November 1, 2024. He is preceded in death by his father, Curtis B. Sowers; sister-in-law, Cathy Sowers; and father-in-law & mother-in-law, Arbie C. & Colene Q. Gallimore.

David attended Floyd County High School. He worked for Moog in Blacksburg for 43 years until his retirement in 2021. He was a wonderful and faithful husband, daddy, and papa, always putting their needs above his own. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed shooting sporting clays. No matter the weather, he would spend time walking and praying in the mornings on their property. David was always willing to lend a helping hand and was a patient teacher of life skills and anything having to do with sportsmanship. He would spend his vacation time taking his family to church camps multiple times a year. He faithfully attended Haven of Rest Bible Church in Galax.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rhonda G. Sowers; mother, Wilma Corine Sowers; daughter & son-in-law, Tonya & Leroy Yoder; son & daughter-in-law, Brian & Breanna Sowers; grandchildren, Blake, Wyatt, Landon, Carter, Lottie, and David “Davey” Yoder (on the way); and brothers & sister-in-law, Rodney & Sharon Sowers and Wendell Sowers. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Jeanne Thompson “nanny” for her special care during his illness and Darlene Rice “head nurse” for all of her support and care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 in Beaver Creek Church with Pastor David Spivey officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Matthew Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at Beaver Creek Church.
