Oakley Elvert Slaughter



Oakley Elvert Slaughter, 83, of Indian Valley, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2015.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Eva Slaughter; father, Willie Hylton and brother, 
Cullen Higgs.

He is survived by sons, Cody Slaughter, David Slaughter, Steve Battistella; daughters, Pam George, Cathy Heiser; six grandchildren, Kayla George, Chad George, Jarred George, Erica George, Joshua George and Shannon Slaughter; brother, Butch Higgs (Suzanne); sister, Darlene Harris (Glen); Mother's of his children, Betty Slaughter, and Terry Lewis.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Maberry Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Floyd with Mr. Bill Fenwick officiating. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday March2, 2015 in the Slaughter Family Cemetery.

Liddie Ellen Weeks


Liddie Ellen Weeks, 73, of Willis, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 26, 2015.  She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ralph E. Weeks; Son & Wife, Duane and Sheila Weeks; Daughter & husband, Sandra and Ronny Dalton; Grandchildren; Whitney & Nathaniel Viers, Cody & Amber Weeks; Great-Grandson, Ryker Lee Viers; Brother; Roy & Mitzie Quesenberry; Sisters, Sadie & Edward Underwood and Mattie Compton. Numerous nieces, nephews and her beloved dog “Molly”.

Funeral service to be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015 at The Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Joe Cox officiating. The interment will follow in the Simpkins, Phillips, Turpin, Quesenberry Cemetery. No visitation prior to service.

Rita Mae Morgan Woolwine Loan




Rita Mae Morgan Woolwine Loan, 64 of Blacksburg, left to early in this life time to be with the angels on Monday, February 23, 2015.

She is preceded in death by her parents; John Sr. and Mary Morgan.

Survivors are daughter; Angela Dawn Woolwine, grandson; Dakota Jacob Cumbee, brothers; Ronald Ray Morgan and John William Morgan Jr., two closest friends; Sandra Collins & Peggy Jones Roop, special caretakers; Phillip Scott Taylor, Jr., Cassie Marie Simpkins, Kristina Riggins, special friend and care giver Elizabeth Linkous Palmer, several uncles, aunts, nieces & nephews.  Special angels to be blessed in her life she considered as her other grandchildren; Ryan Dale Simpkins, Saleen Marie Akers, Derrick Palmer, Davy & April Blankenship.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Bible Holiness Church, 611 South Franklin Street, Christiansburg, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 with Pastor Dwayne Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Verlie Mae Hollandsworth

Verlie Slaughter Hollandsworth, 93, from Indian Valley, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 25, 2015.  She was born September 20, 1921 to Jesse Crockett & Mary Ellen Slaughter.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer W. Hollandsworth, daughter Opal H. Harris, granddaughter Cheyanne Angle, six sisters and two brothers.

Surviving is a son, David W. Hollandsworth and wife Debbie of Springfield, VA; daughters, Christine H. Hollins and husband Ronnie of Riner, Carol H. Miles of Radford.  Seven grandchildren; Joe Harris, Jeff Harris, Cathy Angle, Angela Clifton, Michael Hollandsworth, Matthew Hollandsworth, Amy Miles; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Mabel Hollandsworth of Indian Valley; sister-in-law Bertha McAlexander of Dugspur; host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Special thanks and appreciation to Heather Belcher and the staff on “C” and “A” wings at Skyline Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A celebration of Ms. Verlies’s life will be Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Poston and Rev. Danny Newman officiating.  Interment will follow at the Slaughter Cemetery, Indian Valley.  The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m.   Friday, February 27, 2015 at Maberry Chapel.

Columbus McGrady



Columbus McGrady, 85,  of Indian Valley, passed away Monday, February 23, 2015. He is predeceased by parents Ebb and Mellie McGrady as well as 11 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Loveline McGrady. Daughters and Sons-in-Law; Carolyn and George Stein, Lois and William Dooley. Grandchildren; Andrew and Katie Passarelli, Jeremy Dooley and Great Grandson; Caleb Passarelli. Brother; Martin McGrady of New York. Sisters-in-Law; Ruth McGrady, Nancy McGrady from Christianburg and Virginia McGrady of West Virginia. Several nieces, nephews and cousins, along with many cherished neighbors and friends. Special thanks to his Medi-Home Hospice team, especially Sherry and Doris, and staff  of Skyline Nursing and Rehab.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Maberry Chapel with Rev. James Walker and Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Maberry Funeral Home.

Gertha Alderman Aldridge






Gertha Alderman Aldridge, 97, formerly of Floyd passed away February 15, 2015 at The Berkshire Health and Rehabilitation Center, Vinton, Virginia where she was a resident for more than five years.  She was the oldest child born to John E and Almeda Sowers Alderman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stant, and her daughter, Carol Aldridge Mabery; her brothers, Edgar and William; sisters, Freeda A. Gragan, Elizabeth A Sowers, Ruby A Gray, Alice Alderman, and infant sisters Shelby Jean and Hazel Marie.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Aldridge Conner and her husband Jack, Bedford County; granddaughter, Kathryn Conner Holland and her husband, Gregg, Salem; grandsons, Michael Kevin Mabery and his wife, Susan, Roanoke; J Clay Conner and his wife, Christi, Georgetown. KY; great-grandsons, Adam Gregory and Grayson Conner Holland, Michael Christopher and Kevin Edward Mabery; great-granddaughters, Olivia Carol and Campbell Grace Conner.  Her sister-in-law, Lorraine Alderman, her son-in-law, Edward Mabery and his wife, Doris; several nieces and nephews in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey; special friends Margie and Roger Shortt, Hansel Robertson, Robert and Lucille Miles also survive her.


The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon, Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, with service immediately following with the Reverend Darlene Marshall officiating.  Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery.

The family profoundly thanks the staff at The Berkshire; especially the members of Unit 3, whose compassionate support and care of our loved one will never be forgotten.
