Brenda Sue Via

 

Brenda Sue Via, 70 of Floyd, went Home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 26, 2020. She is preceded in death by her son, Brian Board; sisters, Connie West and Kathy Otey; and parents, Jerome, Sr.  & Lille Otey.

She is survived by her husband, Walker Via; children, Latonya Pollard (Allen), Richard Board, Sandra Board; grandchildren, Mike Board (Amanda), Shawn Board (Danielle), Chris Board, Brianna Board, and Alex Pollard; great-grandchildren, Avery Board, Alicia Board, and Laila & Luka Board; brothers, Jerome Otey, Jr., Larry Otey; sister, Romona Ross-Barlow; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Charlie Henry Hall

 

Charlie Henry Hall, 85 of Radford, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 27, 2020 with his family at his side. He was born to the late Charlie G. & Christina Montgomery Hall.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juanita; sons, Willie, Anthony (Debbie), Calvin (Tami), and Randy; grandchildren, Kriston & Amanda, Hayden & Eden; several great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Geneva Phillips, Treva Bugg, Helen Flinchum, and Jurlene Simpkins; and a special companion and friend, “Tippy”.

A private graveside service will be held.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the special friends and those that helped during this time.

William Guthrie Carte


 

William Guthrie Carte, 81 of Floyd, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rita Lou Carte; daughter, Kathy Carte Whittaker; and parents, William & Juanita Carte.

He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Carte Dickerson; grandchildren, David Dickerson, Randall Dickerson, Katrina Glatt, Michael Sumler, and Chasity Sumler; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Johnny Carte; and sister, Betty Ann Hall.

A private interment will be held in the Jacksonville Cemetery.

Irene Harris Marshall

 

Irene Harris Marshall, 99 formerly of Willis, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Quenton Milze Marshall; parents, Recy & Effie Harris; sisters, Geneva Maxwell and Marie Myers; and nephew, Michael Harris.

Irene was like a second mom to her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed spending time with them and taking them places. She was a dedicated member of the Rebekah Lodge #77, the Floyd Ladies Auxiliary P.M. #7, and the Homemaker’s Club as well as Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren and Topeco Church of the Brethren. She poured her heart into all that she did.

She is survived by her brother, Reecy Lenard Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Varner and Pastor Ted Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Archie Dean Montgomery

 

Archie Dean Montgomery, 64 of Indian Valley, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee & Alverta Montgomery; brothers, Kenny, Junior and Roosevelt Montgomery; sisters; Virginia Albert, Annie Phillips, Darlene Sue Montgomery, Zula Montgomery and Lassie (Cindy) Montgomery.

He is survived by his brother & sisters-in-law, Charles Montgomery (Georgia Mae) and Marie Montgomery; and several nieces and nephews.

As per Archie’s request, he was interred in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery.

Sylvia Ryman Waters


Sylvia Ryman Waters, 78 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Conway Waters, Jr.; son, James Conway “JC” Waters, III; and parents, Lewis & Elizabeth Showman Ryman.

Sylvia enjoyed spending time with family as well as traveling and volunteering. She also enjoyed flowers and yardwork.

She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Lori & Steve Summers and Melissa & Robert Spence; grandchildren, Josh Spence (Crystal), Aaron Summers (Meredith), Jeremiah Spence (Racheal), Adam Summers (Darla), Jacob Summers (Crystal), and Jonathan Spence; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Corben, Olivia, Owen, Mia and Lacey Spence and Palmer, Barrett, Julian, and Ainsley Summers; brother & sister-in-law, Cecil & Wilma Ryman; sister, Barbara Ryman; sisters-in-law, Sandra Weatherholtz (Shelton), Gwen Hinkle (Earl), and Kim Diehl (Dennis); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2020 the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Richard Leon Moran

 

Richard Leon Moran, 89 of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Marie Bowman Moran; and his parents, Aubrey & Nannie DeHart Moran.

He is survived by his sons, Bobby Moran and Dale Moran; grandson, Patrick Moran (Morgan); great-grandson, Daniel Moran; sister, Alma Yearout; brother-in-law, Edwin Bowman (Ann); nieces, Amy Lee, Annette Yearout, Janice Yearout-Patton, and Rebecca Eggleston; and special friends, Maude Hunter-Sloan and Larry Perkins.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor James Cockram officiating. The family will receive friends from Noon – 1 p.m. prior to the service at the cemetery.

Lorna Dare Conner



Lorna Dare Conner, 91 of Meadows of Dan, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 5, 2020. She is preceded in death by two husbands, Daniel Belcher and Arnold Conner; her parents, Rufus & Stella Mae Wood; siblings, Alden Wood, Claudine Belcher, and Joe Wood; and son-in-law, Buford Wood.

Lorna was a faithful member of Harris Chapel Church where she was the pianist until they could no longer have church inside. She had a strong Christian faith and desire to hear God’s word preached. She enjoyed tending to her chickens and her flower gardens.

She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Michael & Linda Fern Belcher; daughter, Rita Wood; grandchildren, Jodi Belcher, Jason Belcher, and Marcus (Alesa) Wood; great-grandchildren, Luke Hayes and Hannah and Kathryn Wood; brother & sister-in-law, Charles & Neleen Wood; and sister, Ruth Martin.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 in the Jonathan Conner Cemetery with Pastor Marcus Wood officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the cemetery.

Wendell Winston Poff

 

Wendell Winston Poff, 79 of Copper Hill, died Friday, September 4, 2020.

Born in Copper Hill, VA, he is preceded in death by his parents, Wythe Alsem & Iris Floy Van Buskirk Poff; and his wife of 54 years, Lelia Frances Pochick Poff.

He is survived by his son, Wendell Kevin Poff and daughter-in-law, Cynthia V. Poff of Roanoke; daughters, Kimberly E. Poff of Copper Hill and Karen P. Wilson and son-in-law James E. Wilson of Check; grandson, Cody W. Carico of Salem; granddaughter, Ashley P. Krawchison and grandson-in-law, Michael Krawchison and two great-grandsons, Cason and Easton Krawchison of Bent Mountain; grandson, A. Jordan Poff of Roanoke; sisters & brothers-in-law, Margaret Poff Wimmer (Sid) of Olympia, WA, Phyllis Poff Marks (Jim) of Vinton, and Lynette Poff Harmon (Mike) of Ferrum; as well as many nieces and a nephew.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and his cremated remains will be interred at Restvale Cemetery in Copper Hill in a private graveside memorial service.

Loveline McGrady, 82 of Indian Valley, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Columbus McGrady; parents, Howard & Gay Smith; and brother, Wayne Smith.

She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Carolyn & George Stein and Lois & William Dooley; grandchildren, Andrew (Katie) Passarelli and Jeremy Dooley; great-grandson, Caleb Passarelli; sisters, Wanda Phillips and Brenda Poff; several nieces and nephews; and many cherished neighbors and friends.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff at Skyline Nursing & Rehab for their kindness and compassionate care of our mom during her last few years.

Neva Trail Ratliff

 

Neva Trail Ratliff, 102 of Floyd, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020. She was born March 16, 1918 to William Harvey and Laura Turner Trail.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Worthland Ratliff; as well as 14 siblings: Odessa, Irma, Dorothy, Chester, Elsie, Anna, Eldridge, Izola, Virgil, Pauleda, Waneda, Marvin, Cluber, and Verna.

Surviving are sister-in-law, Marie Trail of Floyd; brother-in-law, Rev. Brown Radford of Daleville; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Jacksonville Cemetery with Rev. Murray Agee and Rev. Bill Schoenman officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the cemetery. Those wishing to pay their respects may also do so on Friday, September 4, 2020 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home.

Harvie Harrison Reed

 

Harvie Harrison Reed, 70 of Floyd, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2020, to his Eternal Home after a long battle with cancer.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Hubert H. & Velma W. Reed; brothers, Walter, Donald, and Major Reed; and a sister, Ines Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Amy K. Reed; his pride and joy son, Hubert Harrison Reed; brother, Denton Reed; sisters, Glada Luckadoo and Barbara (Dallas) Farmer; several nieces and nephews; a very special grand-dog, Daisy and two other fur babies Chip and Festus whom he loved all dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2020 at the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Pastor Dewayne Trout, Pastor Brian Turpin, and Pastor Dan Whitlock officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Otis Howell and Edward Epperly; parents, Albert & Gladys Dickerson; siblings, Wayne, Albert Junior, Howard, Jim, and Lucille; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Amber Marshall.

She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Sandra & Calvin Shortt and Elizabeth & Terry Thompson; grandchildren, John Shortt, Paul Shortt (Perry), Jennifer Marshall (Dale), and Judy Bennett (Jeff); great-granchildren, Colton, Ava, Michael, Evan, and Ruby; and brothers, Russell Dickerson and Roger Dickerson.
