Winnie Alleene Martin Goad


 

Winnie Alleene  Martin Goad,  90 of Floyd, passed away Monday, November 30, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Hite and Beulah Edna Simmons Martin; brothers, Talmadge Martin, James Martin, Travis Martin; sister, Anna Martin; nephew, Curtis Martin.

She is survived by her loving husband, Hugh Wade Goad; brother, Nelson Ferman Martin (Bonnie); sister, Elrica Kate Dalton (C.C. Dalton, Jr.); sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Martin, Rita Martin; Numerous nieces and nephews and special niece and caregiver, Julie Hubbard.

A Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Charles Hubbard officiating. Interment to follow in the Pleasant Hill  Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service. Due to Covid 19 the family requests you wear a mask during services.

Marvin Gordon Bishop

Marvin Gordon Bishop, 77 of Willis, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020. He is preceded by his parents, Troy & Verna Bishop; sister, Reva Scaggs; and brothers, Nelson and Marlin Bishop.

He is survived by his sister, Zelwood Weddle and friend, Gene Vaughn; brother & sisters-in-law, Jerry & Iola Bishop, and Vera Bishop; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2020 in the Big Sand Cemetery with Pastor James Bradley officiating. Masonic Services will be held by Masonic Lodge #329.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad, Station 4, P.O. Box 257, Floyd, VA 24091.

Nelson Ray Bolt

 

Nelson Ray Bolt, 89, was born in Christiansburg, VA. He enjoyed cattle farming, stock car racing, tending a large garden, making copper kettle apple butter with his family, traveling to Myrtle Beach and to the Smokey Mountains, deer hunting and trout fishing.

Nelson retired from the Radford Pipe Shop where he was a longtime employee. He was a member of the Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church in Willis.

He is the father to his sons and their wives, Alton Bolt and Gail of Troutville, and Donnie Bolt and Linda of Willis. He is grandfather to Jennifer Hicks and Matt; and great-grandfather to Waylon Walker Hicks, of Castle Hayne, NC.

He is also survived by his brothers and their spouses, Lance Bolt and Doris of Willis and Michael Bolt and Penny of Willis; sisters and their spouses, Nelda Sue Baker of Willis, Alma Faye Dalton and Geraland of Hillsville, and Gloria Jane Branscome and Jerry Ray of Pinnacle, NC; sisters-in-law, Sally Bolt of Snowsville, Patty Mae Bolt of Roanoke; brother-in-law, Victor Spangler of Hillsville.  

Nelson is the son of the late Dellas Lee Bolt and Alma Lee Alderman Bolt of Willis. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Vivian Magdalene Bolt; son, Gary Lane Bolt; and siblings, Doug Bolt, James Bolt, Maynard Bolt, Coy Bolt, Alton Junior Bolt, Cora Lou Goad, and Iris Spangler.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 in the Willis Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the Willis Cemetery, PO Box 612, Floyd, VA 24091, 540-745-4549.

In this difficult time of the COVID-19 outbreak, it is requested that masks be worn and social distancing observed. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided at the cemetery by the family.

Lora Maxine Shearing

Lora Maxine Shearing, 80 of Floyd, passed away on Monday, November 23, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Claude Shearing; father, Lonnie Forren; grandparents, Alex Forren and Sally Knapp; and sisters, Janet Ayers and Margie Lilly.

She is survived by her sons, Mark Farley, Henry Farley, Joseph Farley, Johnny Farley, and Timothy Shearing; daughters, Bonnie Winter, Teresa Huff, Kathy Hopkins, Connie Goad, and Rose Shearing; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Mae Bolen; and special friend, Dottie Matthews.

Graveside services will be held at Noon on Monday, November 30, 2020 in the Laurel Branch Cemetery with Pastor Roy Bentley officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. - Noon prior to the graveside service.

Jeffrey Mark Reed, Sr.

 

Jeffrey Mark Reed, Sr., 59 of Floyd, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kala Reed Shaw; and parents, Oris & Lucille Reed.

He enjoyed working on cars and hunting and had a love for Snoopy.

He is survived by his wife, Sheena Reed; children, Jeffrey Reed, Jr. (Ashley), Christina Reed (Brad Jardine), Johnathan Brown, and Stormey Brown; grandchildren, Collin Shaw, Elizabeth Reed, Haleigh Reed, Anna-Lee Corke, Ava Jardine, Jake Jardine, Haven Brown, Chase McNeil, Freya McNeil, Madeline Brown, and Phaedra Brown; aunt & uncle, Jean & Hubert Hubbard.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2020 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Rev. Richard Thomas officiating.

Raymond Emerson Myers

 


Raymond Myers, 77, of Floyd, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2020. He was born in Bland County, VA to Jessie Mae and Ellis Myers, the 10th of 11 children. He was preceded in death by sisters; Loretta Welsh, Nina Jane Saunders and Gaye Burton and by brothers; Byron, William, Richard and Daniel.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane Burton Myers and sons; Tony (Heli) and Russell (T.J.). He is also survived by a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Faye Burton and Judy Acors (Wayne). He is an uncle to many young men and women, and touched the lives of many friends and neighbors.

He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and was known for entertaining with his jokes and hunting stories.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2020 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Chaplain Robbie Vance officiating.

Rita Quesenberry Sweeney

Rita Quesenberry Sweeney, 70 of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents; Fuster & Zena Quesenberry; and brother, Toby Quesenberry,

She is survived by her husband, Elwood Sweeney; son & daughter-in-law, Tracy & Jennifer Sweeney; grandchildren, Austin and Chyenne Sweeney; and brother, Fuster Lee Quesenberry.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.

Frank James Tomlinson, 71 of Willis, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred & Aileen Tomlinson.

He is survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Dana & Erik Builes of New York; grandsons, Logan and Roman Builes; granddaughter, Laila Builes; sisters & brother-in-law, June & Rick Syx of Willis, and Susan Tomlinson of Arizona; nephews, David Arno, Adam Arno, Ricky Syx; and nieces, Jaimie Lindsay and Chelsea Syx.

Per Frank’s request, there will be no services held.

James Graden "Buddy" Haney

 

James Graden “Buddy” Haney, 72 of Riner, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. Buddy was born November 24, 1947 to James Burton and Annie Elizabeth Haney of Blacksburg, VA who precede him in death. He is also preceded in death by brother-in-law, Harry Alls; and an infant son.  

Buddy was a long-time faithful employee of Poly-Scientific (currently MOOG Components) in Blacksburg where he worked for more than 45 years as Shipping Supervisor before retirement in 2015. He served nine years in a local Virginia National Guard unit and later held membership in Stuart’s Horse Artillery Camp #1784, SCV on the service of his great-grandfather Thomas Davis.  

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Aldridge Haney; sons, Chris Haney of Roseland, VA and Alex Haney of Denver, CO; sisters, Mary Alls of Blacksburg and Ella Sue Moore (Albert) of Mechanicsville, VA; nieces, Wanda Alls of Christiansburg, Deborah Moore of Mechanicsville and Diane Alexander (Brian) of Richmond; nephew, Randall Alls (Becky) of Pilot, VA; and great-niece, Crystal Wharton (Jerry) of Blacksburg, as well as his Aldridge family.  

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Ryan Gentzler and RN Kelly Phillips of the Emily Couric Cancer Center Hematology and Oncology Department at the University of Virginia whose special care of Buddy facilitated a 5-year battle with cancer. We would also like to thank Dr. Heather Brooks and the nursing staff at Lewis-Gale Blue Ridge Cancer Center for their special care during his treatments. Also, we are thankful to Cindy’s Companion Service for the helpful care given to Buddy in his last few days. 

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 in the Restvale Cemetery with Pastor Kenny Farley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. 

Flowers are appreciated, although donations to the Floyd County Rescue Squad or American Cancer Society would be appreciated as well.

Due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 virus, masks are required inside of the funeral home for those wishing to attend services. Please remember that seating is limited. The family has also requested that masks be worn at the graveside service.

Clonia Agnes "Aggie" Dalton Dalton Ramey

Clonia Agnes “Aggie” Dalton Dalton Ramey, 77 of Radford, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Isaac & Mary Dalton.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Ramey; children & their spouses, Conrad & Tammy Dalton, Steve Dalton, Gary Dalton, and Sherri & Harry Collins; step-children, Melody & Charles Forbes, and Michael Ramey, Jr.; grandchildren, Austin Huff, Colin Huff, Matthew Dalton, and Taylor Marshall; step-grandchildren, Brianna Ramey, Allison Ramey, Carl Forbes, and Lyndsey Forbes; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; sister & brother-in-law, Nancy & Eunice Harris; and several nieces & nephews.

A private graveside service will be held.

Jane Slusher Williams

 

Jane Slusher Williams, a resident of Floyd County since birth, with the exception of several years in Garrett Park, Maryland, and more recently Snyder Nursing Home in Salem, passed away on November 3, 2020 at the age of 85.

Jane is survived by her brother & sister-in-law, Lane & Mina Slusher of Kansas; special sister-in-law, Nadine Slusher of Floyd; son & daughter-in-law, Michael K. & Jackie Williams of Canton, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Teresa W. & Eddie Worth of Floyd; grandchildren, Jason M. Oury of Newport, TN, Jessica K. Oury Kellogg (David) of Floyd, Jacob Estrada, husband of the late granddaughter Jordan Oury Estrada of Newport, TN, Aaron Williams, and Claire Williams of Canton, GA; great-grandchildren, Colton Ryder Oury and Aurora Jane Estrada of Newport, TN. She was also blessed with many nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, George & Callie Slusher; husband, Deward T. Williams; brother, Maurice T. Slusher; and sister, Betty Mannon.

In younger days, Jane was a bank manager, a Camp Bright Star cook, nurse, and mom to a lot of summer camp kids that missed their parents. More recently, Jane was a devoted volunteer at Angels in the Attic, a hard working gardener and yard perfectionist, proud grandmother, and still a great cook!

Jane enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren with her baking, as she was always baking, and whatever activities they wanted to do. She enjoyed making crafts including growing her own gourds to create beautiful bowls, making quilts, learning how to make shaker wooden baskets and even painting. She loved a craft show.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2020 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society and are greatly appreciated.
