Elvin "Zeb" Richard Harman

Elvin “Zeb” Richard Harman, 81 of Floyd, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alreta Dean Harman; daughter & son-in-law, Dawn & Paul Hill; brother & sister-in-law, Benjamin Dale & Joan Harman; sister, Rita Louise Lawson; brother-in-law, Eugene Helms; special friends, AJ & Joan Boyd; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 in the Harman Cemetery (Fairview Church Road) with Pastor Jason Pratt officiating.

Masks should be worn when attending services at the graveside.

Larry Nowlin Hollandsworth


Larry Nowlin Hollandsworth, 78, of Little Montgomery, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020 and is now asleep in Jesus. He was born in Floyd County, Virginia on June 6, 1942.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sandra; their children, Christine & husband Bobby, Christopher, Sarah & husband Greg, Andrew & wife Sherry, and Deborah; their grandchildren, Kyle & girlfriend Michelle, Heather & husband Collin, Dylan & wife Emily, Jazmine, Troy, Preston, Andrew Douglas, Elizabeth, Cameron, and Brock; their great-granddaughter, Aurora; sisters, Ardith, Joyce, and Joan; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert Clive and Ruby Alma; sisters, Ruth, Bessie, June and Majella; and brothers, Herbert, David, Newton, and Randolph.

His life was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. He was a member of Old Union Primitive Baptist Church, in Floyd County, for 50 years. Elder Larry was the moderator of the Smith River Primitive Baptist Association.  He humbly and faithfully served as Pastor to seven Primitive Baptist Churches: Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Crossroads (Gills Creek) Primitive Baptist Church, Glenwood Park Primitive Baptist Church, Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church, Laurel Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Paynes Creek Primitive Baptist Church, and Old Union Primitive Baptist Church in Floyd County.

Larry graduated from Willis High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. He courageously served his country for four years during which he met the love of his life, his sweetheart, Sandra.

Larry grew up on a dairy farm in Willis which blessed him with the knowledge to cultivate numerous crops each season and raise livestock on the land he worked so tirelessly to obtain. By doing whatever it took to provide for his family, his children learned the lesson of hard work and determination.

Larry was a humble man, but he was proud of the simple life he lived on Little River, sharing his dreams with his beloved, Sandra, raising their children with both faith and love.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Alan Terry, Elder Carl Terry, and Elder Mark Terry officiating. Interment will follow in the Hollandsworth Cemetery and Military Rites by the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.  

Masks are required at all times when attending services inside of Maberry Funeral Home, Inc. Please keep in mind that seating is limited due to the restrictions of COVID-19. Masks should be worn when attending services at the graveside as well.

Oscar L. "Tony" Bolt


Oscar L. “Tony” Bolt, of Montvale, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the age of 80.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cephas and Ida Bolt; brothers, Luther, John Lewis, and Olie (Page); sisters, Goldie Swedenhjelm and Evena Sutphin.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy D. Bolt; daughter, Tammie and husband Darryl Bryant; son, Tony and wife Tonya Bolt; grandchildren, Ashley Lolley, Kristen Camper, Carrie Bryant, and Cody Bolt; and great-grandchildren, Austin Lolley, Beau and Autumn Camper. 

Tony proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Tony was self-employed in construction and plumbing.  He enjoyed collecting and refurbishing antiques and musical instruments. He also enjoyed hunting and bluegrass music. 

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 in the Alderman Cemetery with Rev. Troy Mays officiating.

Douglas Wayne Cox


Douglas Wayne Cox, 76, formerly of Indian Valley, departed this life on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at the Memory Care Unit in Commonwealth Senior Living, Hillsville, where he had been a resident since December 2015.


Doug was born on January 10, 1944 and was preceded in death by his mother, Blanche “Ethelene” Cox Hankey; his grandmother, Mattie Phillips Cox, in whose home he grew up; uncles Marvin, Richard, and Carl “Bear” Cox; Arby Harris, Monroe Gallimore, James “Turk” Talbert, Bill Hollandsworth, and Benny “Ray” Phillips; and aunts, Avis Cox Goad, Gertrude Cox Harris, Mabel Cox Gallimore, and Ruth Cox Talbert.


Survivors include one uncle, Joe (Glenna) Cox; aunts, Muriel Cox Hollandsworth, Kate Cox Phillips, Minnie Cox Turman, Linda Morgan Cox, and Vada Hollandsworth Cox; special first cousin, Sandra Cox Lytton, with whom he was raised; and many other relatives and friends.


Doug attended Franklin School in Indian Valley, Indian Valley Elementary School, and Willis High School and worked at various places, including the Christiansburg Stock Pen, Salem Tie Yard, Burlington Industries, Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and Roanoke Electric Steel, before becoming a long-distance truck driver. Locally, Doug drove for Willis Trucking and Bassett Furniture before taking a job with Overnite Corporation. Doug was employed by Roadway Express and based in Youngstown, Ohio, and Buffalo, New York for nearly twenty-five years before retiring to the Youngstown area in 2009. Doug enjoyed telling stories about the doings and sayings of interesting people he had known or heard of throughout his life, and will, himself, be remembered for his love of a good story, great sense of humor, and loud, infectious laugh.


Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2020 in the Moten Cox Cemetery with Rev. Joe Cox officiating. The family will gather from Noon – 1 p.m. at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel prior to the service.


The family thanks Commonwealth Senior Living in Hillsville and Medi Home Health and Hospice for taking good care of Doug. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make donations to the charities of their choice.

Steven Posey Weeks

 


Steven Posey Weeks, age 66, formerly of Floyd, passed away at his home in Greenwood on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.

After graduating from Floyd County High School in 1972, Steve began his career in the construction business and worked until his retirement earlier this year.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dianna, of Greenwood; and parents, Posey and Frances Weeks, of Alum Ridge.

Survivors include his two sons, Steven (Allison) Weeks, of Riner and Andrew Weeks, of Troutville; two grandchildren, Mason and Silas; and a sister, Marilyn (Randy) Gallimore, of Floyd.

Services will be private.

Herbert Benson Markle


Herbert Benson Markle, loving husband and father, passed away at age 94, on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 in Newington/Lorton, Virginia.

Herb was born on September 13, 1926 in Willis, Floyd County, VA to the late Curtis Brown, Sr. and Cynthia Eleanor Weeks Markle. He went to Floyd County High School. On August 5, 1960, Herb married Aldeen Leah Burton and raised one daughter, Leah. He worked as an Electronics Technician for Melpar, Inc. In 1961, Herb joined the Army DOD Center for Night Vision & Electro-Optics, retiring from the Air Systems Division in 1987. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea serving in the Army Air Core as well as in the Air Force.

He had a passion for aviation, electronics, optics and an insatiable curiosity of all things. He was always learning, studying, experimenting and inventing. One of his hobbies was photography where he would try to catch that perfect picture of a flower, bird, butterfly or bee. Herb was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 186, Manassas, VA, VFW Post 7327, and the American Legion Post 176, both of Springfield, VA.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Curtis Markle, Jr. (wife Oveda), Ralph Markle (wife Vera), Charles Markle (survived by wife Wanda); and sister Elizabeth Markle Kish (husband George).

He is survived by his wife, Aldeen; daughter, Leah Grossi (husband Chris); grandson, Giovanni Grossi; brother, Robert Markle (wife Elnora); brother-in-law, Joseph Dillon; many loving nieces and nephew; and many more great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2020 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Pastor Jerry Hylton officiating and Military Honors by the Seymour Johnson Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel prior to the graveside service.

Due to COVID-19, masks must be worn inside of the funeral home.

William "Bill" Curtis Hayden

 

William (Bill) Curtis Hayden was born on September 11, 1925 in Floyd, VA to the late Wise Hayden Jr. and Clara Beaver Hayden. A WWII Vet and member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Bill served in the Navy where he was honorably discharged in 1946. Shortly thereafter, on December 19, 1946, he married Constance (Connie) Hayden at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

A resident of Floyd for most of his life, he served as one of the founders of Floyd’s first rescue squad where he went on to become Captain. As a community leader, he had many friends and family and devoted himself to raising his 6 daughters: Deborah, Marsha, Melinda, Natasha, Monica and Melissa who went on to marry John Helm, Greg Beatty, Johnny Walker, Ramon Stewart, Lewis Stuart and Christopher Bryant. Bill was married to the love of his life, Connie Hayden for 73 years.

A true leader, Bill took on many roles in the community where he was well-known and admired by many. He worked as a brick mason and bricked many homes in Floyd and the surrounding areas, worked at Maberry Funeral Home, served as the first Black Supervisor of Floyd County and President of the Floyd County NAACP, was an Elder at Mt. Zion Christian Church and was a 32 degree Shriner and Mason.

His friends and family will remember him for his calm demeanor, strong faith in God and love for his family. While we will all miss him dearly, we are in awe of the legacy he created and how it will live on through 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 6 daughters, his wife and the many relatives and friends who loved him.

Due to COVID there will not be funeral services at this time. A memorial service in the Spring of 2021, to be determined.

Marvin Boyd Eanes, Jr. 56 of Floyd, passed away Friday, December 4, 2020. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Eanes.

He is survived by his daughter, Mykayla Eanes; father, Marvin B, Eanes, Sr. (Janet); sister, Debbie Olmo (Richie); significant other, Mardella Poff; uncle, G.C. Spangler (Rhonda); aunt, Glenna Turner; numerous extended family and special friends.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the Wilson Cemetery with Mr. G.C. Spangler as the speaker.

Alva Mae Harman


 

Alva Mae Harman, 88 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Nannie Harman; husband, Coy Harmon; siblings, Juanita Harman, Jerry M. Harman, Jr., Marie H. Williams; nephew, Dean A. Williams.

Alva Mae was a member of the Topeco Church of The Brethren, she worked at The Bank of Floyd for 40 plus years as a Book Keeper and she was a Fun Loving Aunt.

She is survived by her nieces, Annette W. King, Lynne H. Haskins (C.W.); nephew, Gregg Harman (Cathy); great niece, Stacie M. King; great nephews, Chad King (Kay), Mac Harman (Victoria), great-great nieces, Callie Eanes, Emma King; great-great nephew, J.D. King.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Topeco Church of The Brethren with Pastor Ted Turner officiating. The interment will follow at the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Maberry Funeral home.
