Peggy Keith Bishop

If you were from Floyd County Virginia and ate one of the over 1,000,000 hot dogs sold at Midway Grocery, you knew Peggy Keith Bishop. “Peg” was the one with the smile on her face always making you laugh, perhaps pumped your gas when she was in her seventies, and always served her customers whom she felt was part of her family, with pride, respect, and a warm greeting. Peggy’s family regretfully informs you all that Peggy has left this earth but happily, we know she went to be with her Lord and Savior on her 83rd birthday, June 24, 2023.

Peggy is going to join her beloved parents, Kerry & Bula Keith; sisters & brothers-in-law, Shirley & Ralph Duncan, Iva & Palmer Tolbert; brothers, Elmer Keith and Mike Keith; brother-in-law, Tapp Weddle; and her loving husband, Harold Alderman.

Peggy is survived by many who will miss her dearly including her brother & sister-in-law, James & Doreda Keith; sister, Edna Weddle; numerous nieces and nephews, and her best friend of many years, Marie Montgomery.

Even though Peggy never had children, she was a mother to her nephews, Steve, Eugene & Angie, Brian, and Glen & Susan Duncan, who she called her personal nurse. They grew up beside or with her, depending on who’s house had their favorite meal! Peggy was an aunt, great-aunt, and great-great aunt to many nieces and nephews whom she truly loved. Her nephew Shawn & Amanda had her in their home for all of the holidays during her last years in life.

Peggy loved basketball that she played at Floyd High School where she graduated from. She continued to play later in life on the Alumni team until she had her right thumb broken! She continued watching basketball while nephews and nieces played.

After high school, Peggy worked in the sewing factory in Floyd until she moved to Martinsville. She then returned to Floyd where her father built her a solid home that she was very proud of. She was co-owner of the famous Midway Grocery, making biscuits starting at 3:00 a.m. so her customers could enjoy a good breakfast on their way to work. Peggy continued working at Midway Grocery until she became ill with Covid at the age of 81.

In the last 1 ½ years of her life, she so enjoyed her family especially playing with Lilly & Luke and telling the stories of her life that we will all miss hearing no matter how many times we heard them. Peggy was a faithful Christian reading her bible daily and was a member of Auburn Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am. on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Stanley “Shake” Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the many medical providers and nursing staff at CNRVMC who tried to keep Peggy with us a little bit longer but let her pass comfortably, peacefully with dignity and respect when it was apparent that Peggy needed to go to her Eternal Home, Heaven.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Auburn Baptist Church, 3840 Riner Rd, Riner, VA 24149.

James Weldon Belcher

James Weldon Belcher, 78 of Meadows of Dan, passed away at home with his wife and daughter by his side on Saturday, June 17, 2023. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jodie Marie Belcher; parents, Thomas & Della Bolt Belcher; and siblings, Paul Belcher, Clara Puckett, and Louise Frazier.

Jim retired at the rank of Major from the Air Force after 26 years, having served in both Vietnam and Desert Storm.   Upon retiring, Jim returned home to the Blue Ridge Mountains and began his second career as a Sawmill man with the Turman companies.

Once he officially retired, he would have withered without a project.  As such, an assortment of ponds and trails and other surprises have been left as reminders that “Jim was here”. He had a habit of acquiring tractors, drinking merlot, and giving generously of his time, laughter and resources.   His greatest legacy is deep well of friends and expansive family.  Jim’s ability to make friends and keep them is evident in that even in the last weeks of his life he was still chatting with friends from each of the eight decades he spanned.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Belcher; daughter & son-in-law, Rebecca & Benjamin Osborne; grandchildren, Oliver Osborne and Winston Osborne; sisters & brother-in-law, Connie Nester, Dorothy Cruise, and Mabel & Douglas Puckett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Marcus Wood officiating and Military Honors performed by the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Interment will follow in the Jonathan Conner Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
