Madeline Spence Bayne

 

Madeline Spence Bayne, 93 of Roanoke, passed away at her home on Friday, December 24, 2021. She was born in New York City on May 17, 1928.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Adele Brockman; first husband, Kenneth Spence; second husband, Jack Bayne, Sr.; sister, Lorraine Murphy; brother, Henry Brockman; daughter, Linda Spence; and step-granddaughter, Kendall Bayne.

Madeline is a longtime member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. She taught Kindergarten at Floyd Elementary School and worked as a teacher’s assistant at Indian Valley Elementary School. She was an extraordinary person, meetings life’s challenges by getting her teaching degree at 54 years old while working as a teacher’s assistant. She always put family first, loved gardening, and was an avid reader and Showtimers Theater patron.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Rakes Cooper (Joe) and Sue Ford; grandson, Brandon Rakes (Rachel); great-grandchildren, Kendall & Carson Rakes; step-children, Jack Bayne, Jr. (Diana) and Jere Bayne (Andrea); step-grandchildren, Lauren McAllister (Dylan), Michael Beaudoin (Melissa), and Conner Bayne; step-great-grandchildren, Micah McAllister, Malachi, Judah, Deacon, Abel, and Magnolia Beaudoin; sister-in-law, Barbara Brockman; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, Roanoke, VA, with Monsignor Patrick Golden officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022 in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Willis, VA.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Visiting Angels for their compassionate care that allowed her to reside in her home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, 2505 Electric Rd, Roanoke, VA 24018, the American Heart Association, or plant a seed to celebrate her life.

Anita Marie Quesenberry

 

Anita Marie Quesenberry, 91 of Indian Valley, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Hubert Quesenberry; parents, Taswell & Ocie Hollandsworth; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Turman & Gladys Quesenberry; sisters, Winnie Dalton, Beulah Gallimore, Nina Browning, and Lilas Webb; and granddaughter, Betty Quesenberry.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons & daughters-in-law, Darel & Patty Quesenberry, Garrett & Aileen Quesenberry, Andrew & Lynda Quesenberry; daughter & son-in-law, Deborah Sutphin (Luis Izaguirre); grandchildren, Billy & Christy Quesenberry, Bobby & Candace Quesenberry, Brandon & Sheena Quesenberry, Jennifer & Brian Sutphin, Heather & Jonathan Gallimore, Brandey & Casey McPeak and Elizabeth & Logan Shepherd; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; step-grandchildren, Renie & Megan Gates and Maggie & Zoey Snavely; two step-great-grandchildren, sisters & brothers-in-law, Irene Gallimore, Vada Cox, Brenda & Russell Howell, Josephine Alderman, Wanda & Dwayne Grubb, Martha & Jimmie Bower; brother, Ren Hollandsworth; brother-in-law, Connie Browning; and sister-in-law, Lillian Quesenberry.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2021 in the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Lowell Hopkins and Elder Carlton Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Indian Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from Noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.


Margie Ellen Stutler Phillips

 

Margie Ellen Stutler Phillips, 87 of Willis, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 24, 2021.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Earl & Marble Margie Carte Stutler; husbands, Eugene Kelley Phillips, Sr. and Douglas Burdette; sons, Paul, Tommy, and Roger; daughter, Virginia Conner; brothers, Bob, Tom, Dick, and Dallas Stutler; sister, Shirley Mae Hughs; and six grandsons.

Margie loved spending time with her family. In her last few days on earth, family came to visit and made cherished memories with her. She had many hobbies over the years. She loved baking cakes for weddings, birthdays, and many more occasions. Photography was another passion; her photo albums of family were amazing. She also liked to paint pictures and give them to family.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons & daughters-in-law, Eugene “Gene”, Jr. & Linda Phillips, Walter Phillips, Joseph “Joe” & Darlene Phillips, Pamala Phillips, and Gaye Phillips; son-in-law, Garland Conner; sisters & brothers-in-law, Barbara & Richard Jones and Geneva & Taby Lacy; grandchildren, Kelley III, Annie, Ginger, Missy, Lynn, David, Taylor, Jessica, April and Joseph “Joey” II; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank her dear friend, Brenda Dalton, for being there for her for all these years.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor Stanley Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

A special thank you is extended to Kindred Hospice for the care that they gave Margie.

Roy Randolph Altizer

 

Roy Randolph Altizer, 89 of Riner, passed away at home surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy & Avis Altizer; and sister, Ruth Altizer.

Randolph was married to his high school sweetheart, Frances, for 64 years. He was a dairy farmer for 40 years before changing to beef farming. He was an avid Yankee’s baseball fan. He was a devoted member of Riner Grace Brethren Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Bower Altizer; sons & daughters-in-law, Russell & Leann Altizer, Oakley & Lisa Altizer, Jeffrey & Karen Altizer, and Samuel Altizer & fiancée Suzanne Mayo; and granddaughter, Kayla Altizer & fiancé Hunter Davis.

Funeral services will be private with interment in the St. Matthew Cemetery with Military Rites by the Floyd VFW Post #7854, American Legion Post #127, and Army National Guard. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2021 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel where the family will not be present to greet the public.

Glenn Thomas Dulaney

 

Glenn Thomas Dulaney, 72 of Floyd, went to his Heavenly Home on December 18, 2021. He was born on December 24, 1948. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Lucy Dulaney. He will be missed by all his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Spangler Dulaney; sisters, Arlene (David) Radford and Shelby (James) Slusher; brothers, Ellis, Jr. (Shelby) Dulaney and Gary (Dreama) Dulaney; mother-in-law, Barbara Spangler; and several nieces and nephews.

Glenn was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Floyd. He always had a smile for everyone and started Dulaney’s Greenhouses in 1980 where he enjoyed working until 2019 when he retired due to health issues and his wife, Sara, took over the business.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to C-wing at Skyline Nursing and Rehab for their care and kindness.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.

Sandra Lee Maynard



Sandra Lee Maynard, 71 of Floyd, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Estill & Delores Robinette; brother, Dennis Robinette; and niece, Cassie Robinette.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Dean Stepp (Amy); grandson, Jimmy Duncan Stepp; brothers, Teddy Robinette, Danny Robinette, Sonny Robinette, Eddie Robinette, and Duane Robinette; sisters, Connie Morgan, Dreama Dulaney, and Pam Meyers; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Vaneta Willard and Missy Coble; and family pets, Mandy, Baby, and Sam.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Betty Hollandsworth Sutphin


Betty Hollandsworth Sutphin, 81 of Indian Valley, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, December 17, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hurshel & Eulala Hollandsworth; daughter & son-in-law, Teresa Sutphin Young & Dale Young; brother, Early Hollandsworth; and sisters, Geraldine Shelor and Phyllis Martin.

Betty was a faithful member of Indian Valley Church of God. Her love for the Lord and her family was evident in all she did. Betty loved and cared for her Grandson, Travis Dale Young from the young age of five years old. He held a special place in her heart. Betty also loved spending Saturdays with her sister, also known as her best friend, Barbara Quesenberry. Betty enjoyed all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visiting and eating meals at her house. Her garden was full of devoted labor and she enjoyed working in it all the time.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Aaron Nevains Sutphin; sons & daughters-in-law, Lloyd & Vicky Sutphin, Larry “Moe” & Rhonda Sutphin, and Michael Lytton (Jessie Cromer); grandsons, Rusty Sutphin and Travis Young; granddaughters, Tonya (Jeff) Thompson, Nikki (David) Caldwell, Ashton (Darryl) Clark, Carley Lytton, and Kaylee Wood; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Thompson, Reid Thompson, Kasen Clark, and Raylinde Sutphin; brother, James Hollandsworth; sister, Barbara Quesenberry and Carolyn Warner; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 20, 2021 at the Indian Valley Church of God with Rev. Kenneth Poston and Rev. Joe Cox officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

While our hearts are grieving here on Earth, she is in a place of God’s beauty. No tears or earthly cares, only peace and joy forever with love beyond compare. If you trust in Jesus, the promise is you will get a hug from Betty someday on Heaven’s Golden Shore.

Donald Eugene Hylton

Donald Eugene Hylton, 85, of Floyd, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a devoted husband to the love of this life, Brenda Slusher Hylton, for 51 years.  He was a loving father and papa and cherished his family dearly.  He was loved and respected by everyone that knew him, and will be remembered for his firm handshake and loving hugs that he shared with everyone he met.  Donald was a faithful member, head usher, and Deacon of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, and also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Beaver Creek Cemetery.  

Donald was born July 5, 1936, in Floyd County, VA. After graduating in 1955, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served for two years. Following his service, he worked in Northern Virginia on heavy equipment with his younger brother Olen for ten years.  He then returned home and started his backhoe experience with Archie Moran.  That experience led him to start his own business in 1969, Donald Hylton Ditching Contractor. Donald spent over 35 years plowing cable for Citizens Telephone Cooperative as an independent contractor.  In addition, he did backhoe work throughout Floyd County where he made many lifelong friends.  He enjoyed farming, and assisted his father in maintaining the family farm for many years.  He helped organize the first Hylton Family Reunion in 1985 and there have been 11 reunions over the years which were attended by families from many states.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard Gilbert Hylton and Edith Reed Hylton; brother, Olen L. Hylton; brother-in-law, Dale A. Bukkila. 

Donald is survived by his wife, Brenda Slusher Hylton; his children, Donna (Danny) Smith, and Karen (Mark) Via; five grandchildren, Angela (Mike) Myers, Patricia V. Moore, Laura Lee (Brandon) Allen, Jacob Smith, and Emma Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Trevan (Chloe) Via, Kaylee Myers, Ashby Moore, and Addison, Nash, Tucker, and Sada Allen; sister, Iva H. Bukkila; brother, M. Wayne (Darlene) Hylton; sister-in-law, Lavene M. Hylton; nieces, Mary Elizabeth “Buffy” Roop, Christa Hylton; nephews, Eric Bukkila, Todd Hylton, Adam Hylton, and Chad Hylton.  He also had many faithful friends and neighbors that he loved as family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, Floyd, with Pastor Marvin Wade, the Rev. Richard Thomas, and the Rev. Clyde Hylton officiating.  Interment will follow in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.

Jennifer Treadway Hollandsworth


 

Jennifer Treadway Hollandsworth, 45 of Willis, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021. She is preceded in death by her Grandma, Grace Goddard; Pop Pop, Bob Goddard; Grandpa, Hank Maaser; and brother-in-law, Chad Hollandsworth.

She is survived by her husband, Scott E. Hollandsworth; parents, Jimmy & Marcella Treadway; brother & sister-in-law, Jimmy & Melody Treadway; sister & brother-in-law, Malinda & Matthew Peters; nieces & nephews whom she loved as her own children, Dylan Peters, Elias Peters, J.T. Treadway, DeSiree’ Peters, Harmony Treadway, and Jazzmyn Treadway; great-nephews, Aiden Simpkins, Michael Simpkins, and Dylan Peters; and mother-in-law, Connie Hollandsworth.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Clergyman Jimmy Treadway officiating. Interment will follow in the Greasy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
