Clarence Hale Huff


Clarence Hale Huff, 72 of Indian Valley, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents, Argel & Bessie Huff; and sisters, Connie Goad and Ricky Huff.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Phillips Huff; son, Bradley Clarence Huff (Teresa); daughter, JoCinda Phillips (David); grandchildren, Cole Phillips, Torie Huff (Josh), Felicia Huff, Dillon Huff, Blaine Phillips, Addison Fegley, and Ethan Fegley; step-granddaughter, Tiffany Moore (Joey); great-grandchildren, Weslyn, Declan, Aiden, Aubrey, Angelica, and Isaiah; sisters & brothers, Juanita Quesenberry (Reidell), Katherine Marshall (Kim), Dewey Huff (Rosa), James Huff, Roger Huff (Betty), and Ruby Simpkins (Rollie); numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Abigail.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Poston and Rev. James Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the Caswell P. Kidd Montgomery Memorial Cemetery with Military Rites by the Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Roger Shortt






















Roger Shortt, 94 years old, departed this life on May 13, 2019.  Roger was born in Floyd, Virginia, on January 7, 1925, to Amos Benjamin and Callie Barton Shortt.  Predeceasing him were his parents, his son Roger Ward Shortt, and his brothers and sisters-in-law Wilson and Ola Shortt, Ward Shortt, Jack and Madeline Shortt, and Diamond Shortt. 

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Margie Sweeney Shortt, sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Betsy Shortt of Bowling Green, Virginia, James and Stephanie Shortt of Floyd, Virginia, and daughter and son-in-law Ann-Margaret Shortt and George Slusher of Floyd, Virginia.  Also surviving are grandchildren and spouses Scott and Theresa Shortt, David Shortt, Samuel and Lindsay Shortt, Jonathan Shortt, Jameson Shortt, Reuben Slusher and Daisy Slusher, and great grandchildren  Addison, Jozef and Atlee.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law Sylvia P. Shortt and many nieces and nephews.

Roger was a 1943 graduate of Floyd High School and served in the U. S. Army Combat Engineers Division from 1943 to 1946 in England, Germany, and France.  He was employed by General Electric for 30 years and was a member of Little River Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Superintendent of Sunday School.  Roger leaves behind many cherished memories for those who loved him in the Roger Road community, Little River Baptist Church membership, the Floyd VFW and the American Legion.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019 at the Little River Baptist Church with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor Bradley Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Military Rites by the Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854, American Legion Post #127, and the Army National Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Iva Moles Gardner


Iva Moles Gardner, 80 of Pulaski, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bethlehem & Lucy Moles; son, Ronnie Gardner; and brothers & sisters, Marvin Moles, Sr., Harris Moles, Laura Moles Linkous, Mae Moles Page, and Lois Moles Edmonds.

She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Michael L. & Paulette Gardner; grandchildren, David Gardner, Philip Gardner & wife Heather; great-grandchildren, Leora Gardner, Sawyer Gardner; brother & sisters, Neva Eversole, Nelcie Compton, Clyde Moles & wife Marsha, Shasta Sue Moles, Frances Worrell, and Beth Moles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Bentley officiating. Interment will follow in the Bishop Gardner Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Bruce O'neil Eanes


Bruce O’neil Eanes, 60 of Check, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents, Archie Gordon & Iva Gladys Eanes; and brother, Earsel Garland Eanes.

He is survived by his wife, Dreama McNeill Eanes; son & daughter-in-law, Bradley & Jennifer Eanes; daughter & son-in-law, Angela & Tyler Boyd; granddaughter, Adriana Boyd; brothers & sisters-in-law, Gerald & Rita Eanes and Darrell & Lisa Eanes; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Herman Lester (Les) Blevins



Herman Lester (Les) Blevins, 99 of Floyd, formerly of Appalachia, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty Banner Blevins; parents, Samuel J. & Parthena Blevins; two sisters, Eula Blevins and Lola Farmer; and granddaughter, Danielle Scott.

He is survived by his son, Terry C. Blevins (Joyce) of Floyd, VA; daughter, Connie McAfee (Steve) of Cincinnati, OH; three grandsons, Kevin Blevins (Stephanie) of Floyd, VA, Daniel Blevins (Amanda) of Afton, VA, and Andrew McAfee (Emily) of Cincinnati, OH; three great-granddaughters, Larah, Dezi, and Sabrie Blevins of Floyd, VA.

He was a WWII Veteran and served with the 4th Armored Division in Europe and received a Purple Heart. He was a Life Member of the Masons Lodge 229 in Appalachia, VA, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the Stuart Horse Artillery Camp 1784, Floyd, VA.

He worked for the Interstate Railroad for 12 years as a Boilermaker. He was a member of the UMWA for 66 years and retired from Westmoreland Coal Company having worked in maintenance.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2019 in the Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, VA with Rev. Robert McLavey officiating and Military Rites by the Army National Guard and the local VFW. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity or church of your choice.

Margaret Ann Smith



Margaret Ann Smith, 88 of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd & Annie Smith; and brother & sister-in-law, Pat & Nancy Smith.

She is survived by her nephews & their wives, Scott & Susan Smith, and David & Wanda Smith.

Margaret was a retired teacher from Martinsville City Schools. She was a member of the Floyd Historical Society, Daughters of the Revolution, and the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville.

Funeral Services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Agnew officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 - Noon prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Floyd County Historical Society, PO Box 292, Floyd VA 24091.

Ralph Junior Hale


Ralph Junior Hale, 77 of Check, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife, Cobina “Dee Dee” Hale; parents, Ellis & Margaret Hale; and siblings, Francis Gillispie, Mildred Moore, Paul Hale, Lucy Brizendine, and Virginia “Gay” Witt.

Ralph was the owner and operator of Ralph’s Auto Body and Repair for more than 30 years where he served many. He was an avid golfer and loved Myrtle Beach.

He is survived by his daughters, Ginny Hale, and Chris Hale (Kenny); grandchildren, Jeffrey Hale (Sheena), Damian Nimmo (Abigail), and Anna Hale (John); great-grandson, Waylon; great-granddaughter, Chloe; and brothers and sisters, Mamie Austin, Author Hale, Lee Hale, Rose Dooley, and Charlotte Brizendine.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daniel Whitlock officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery with Military Rites by the Floyd V.F.W. Post 7854 and American Legion Post 127. Melvin Edward Weddle


Melvin Edward Weddle, 91, has gone from this life to be with the Lord on April 23, 2019. He was born in Willis, VA on November 22, 1927 to Hayden A. & Laura Keith Weddle. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Lorene.

He is survived by his step-daughter, Roberta Chadwick and husband Ron from Tybee Island, GA.

Mr. Weddle was a career Army Veteran who served tours in Germany, Hawaii, Texas, Korea, Vietnam, and Georgia. He served in many church congregations with his final place of worship at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren. He spent his final years at the Veterans Care Center in Salem, VA. Needless to say he will be missed by numerous nephews, nieces, church friends, and anyone who knew this wonderful man.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Marvin Wade officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in the Hillandale Memorial Gardens, Lithonia, GA on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

Reba Lawrence Jones


Reba Lawrence Jones, 83 of Pilot, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Delano Jones; parents, Noah Buford & Vedia Conner Lawrence; brothers, Raymond and Allen; and sisters, Dorothy, Garnet, and Mary.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Jane Jones; grandsons, Terry & Amanda Poff and Adam & Deborah Poff; great-grandchildren, Gavin Poff, Aiden Poff, and Tressa Poff; sister, Ilene Lawrence; sister-in-law, Opal Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Kingrea officiating. Interment will follow in the Huffville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the funeral home.
