Herman Lester (Les) Blevins, 99 of
Floyd, formerly of Appalachia, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019. He is
preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty Banner Blevins; parents,
Samuel J. & Parthena Blevins; two sisters, Eula Blevins and Lola Farmer;
and granddaughter, Danielle Scott.
He is survived by his son, Terry C.
Blevins (Joyce) of Floyd, VA; daughter, Connie McAfee (Steve) of Cincinnati,
OH; three grandsons, Kevin Blevins (Stephanie) of Floyd, VA, Daniel Blevins
(Amanda) of Afton, VA, and Andrew McAfee (Emily) of Cincinnati, OH; three
great-granddaughters, Larah, Dezi, and Sabrie Blevins of Floyd, VA.
He was a WWII Veteran and served with
the 4th Armored Division in Europe and received a Purple Heart. He
was a Life Member of the Masons Lodge 229 in Appalachia, VA, the Sons of the
Confederate Veterans and the Stuart Horse Artillery Camp 1784, Floyd, VA.
He worked for the Interstate Railroad
for 12 years as a Boilermaker. He was a member of the UMWA for 66 years and
retired from Westmoreland Coal Company having worked in maintenance.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00
p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2019 in the Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, VA with
Rev. Robert McLavey officiating and Military Rites by the Army National Guard
and the local VFW. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be
made to the charity or church of your choice.
