Orland Westley Phillips

Orland Westley Phillips, 104, of Willis, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leora Marshall Phillips; parents, Elbert and Nora Phillips; brothers, Eldon, Holly, and Delbert; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

He was a loving father to his four daughters. He was a World War II veteran and enjoyed photography and we have many photos of the birds on the feeders and the chipmunks playing on his front porch. He had the mind of an engineer and was always coming up with puzzles to be worked, and other inventions. He loved working in the woodworking shop and made many pieces of furniture. He made each of the females in the family a jewelry box.

Orland is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Reece McPeak, Jr., Mary and Roy Hodge, Nora and Roy Junior Bentley, and Paulette and Mike Gardner; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, special friends and neighbors that meant so much to him.

The family wants to thank the loving and compassionate caregivers that took such good care of him. We also want to thank Mountain Valley Hospice.

It was Orland’s wish to donate his body to science, so a celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 at New Harvest Ministries in Willis, Virginia, with Pastor Roy Junior Bentley officiating and Military Rites by the Floyd VFW Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a church or charity of your choice.
