Stanley Cleo Lorton


Stanley Cleo Lorton, 100 of Willis, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019. Stanley is the son of Joseph Lorton & Allie Slusher Lorton, now deceased. He was born in Radford, VA. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Eva Vaughan Lorton; wife, Ruby Vaughn Lorton; brothers & sisters-in-law, Willard & Alberta Lorton, Lawrence Lorton, and Jack  & Betty Lorton; and sisters & brothers-in-law, Vivian & Butch Breazeale, Earnestine & Robert Bond, and Mildred & Griff Griffith.

Stanley was a World War II Veteran that served overseas on the front lines as ammunition carrier for the Army. 

He is survived by his daughters & son-in-law, Carolyn Weddle, Linda Sauvageau, and Betty & Chris Perry; step-children, Frank Vaughn, Catherine Pauley, and Tom Vaughn; grandchildren, Lynn & Terri Weddle, Lee & Anette Weddle, Alan & Darlene Sauvageau, Ryan & Lindsey Etter, Cory Sauvageau, Mark Perry, April & Neal Bates, Amy & Jay Finch, Matt & Jessica Perry; step-grandchildren, Joel Vaughn, Robin Jones, Tina Vaughn, Sharon Quesenberry, and Lynn Coffey; great-grandchildren, Cassidy Sauvageau, Gabe Sauvageau, Cameron Sauvageau, Zach Weddle, Evin Finch, Austin Etter, Madison Sauvageau, Christopher Bates, Ethan Bates, and Cord Bates. He is also survived by two wonderful caregivers Marlene Johnson and Randy Swartz for the last five years.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Hylton-Vaughn Cemetery with Military Rites by the Army National Guard. The family will receive friends from Noon – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ledlie Velma Huff Quesenberry


Ledlie Velma Huff Quesenberry, 90 of Indian Valley, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 4th, 2019. She was preceded in death by infant grandson, Jamie Lafon Alley.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Foster F. Quesenberry; Four daughters, Barbara J. Marshall, Lois Morgan (Harold), Melinda Phillips (Kevin), Wanda Alley (Rocky), all of Indian Valley; Seven grandchildren, April M. Byrd of Christiansburg, Amanda Duncan (Shawn) of Indian Valley, Misty Alley (Elliott Johnson) of Roanoke, Grace Duncan (Christopher) of Indian Valley, Samuel Phillips of Indian Valley, Isaac Phillips of Indian Valley, and Faith Alley of Indian Valley; Three great-grandchildren, Luke and Lilly Duncan, and Nalani Johnson; Brother and sister-in-law, Rollie Zebedee and Velma Huff of Willis; Numerous special nieces and nephews. 
Ledlie, a lifelong resident of Indian Valley, was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and devoted Christian. She loved her family fiercely and liked nothing more than being surrounded by loved ones. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning & cooking, baking her famous “Ledlie Cake”, singing hymns, reading her Bible and playing endless games of Scrabble with anyone she could wrangle into a game. Ledlie had a kind, humble and gentle spirit that endeared her to everyone she ever met. Her presence will be terribly missed by all that knew and loved her. 
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. Interment will follow in the Cox Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
The family would like to thank Carillion New River Valley Medical Center, Radford Rehab and the Floyd County Fire & Rescue Station #4 for the care given.

Judy Faye Hylton Stanley


Judy Faye Hylton Stanley, 64 of Hillsville, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2019.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Stanley; mother, Belle Hylton; grandchildren, Joanna Carroll and Matthew Triplett; sisters & brothers-in-law, Bonnie & Robert Roten and Becky & Lewis Cox;  nephew, Robert Roten, Jr.; niece, Frances Triplett; and sister-in-law, Virginia Duncan.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at the Hylton Family Cemetery, Red Roof Ln, with Minister Dennis Trail officiating. illsHills

Jean R. Robbins

Jean Robbins, 89, formerly of Floyd, VA died peacefully in the early morning of June 21, 2019 in Owensboro, Kentucky.

She was the daughter of Tom and Lucy Rakes of Floyd VA.  She married the love of her life, Lawrence (Larry) Robbins on June 4, 1949 in Floyd Va.  The family lived in Lenoir, NC, Orlando Florida and West Palm Beach Florida. In 1972, the family returned to Floyd Virginia. She spent the last few years of her life in Owensboro, KY with her daughter, Lisa.

Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband Larry, parents Tom and Lucy Rakes, siblings Durward Rakes, Rodolph Rakes, and Lyndall Toms. 

Survivors include her children, Robbie Robbins, Floyd, VA, Gail Hunter, Aiken, SC, and Lisa Haynes, Owensboro, KY; grandchildren, Brian (and Susan) Hunter, Susan (and Kevin) Koski, Kaela Bailey, Taylor (and Nathan) Biondi, Will Hamilton, and Emma Haynes; and her great-grandchildren, Caroline Hunter, Samuel Bailey, Luke Hunter, and Kade Koski.  She is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews.

Jean (known to her grandchildren as Mom Mom) will be remembered as a creative, talented, caring, and generous person. She sought to bring beauty and kindness into her home and her community, and was keen to teach others to do the same. She was a gifted cook and baker, and loved teaching her family members to carry on all the family traditions. Jean was also active at the Floyd United Methodist Church and supported the Floyd Rescue Squad and several families on the island of Dominica through the non-profit FAIRS organization. Over the years, she made many beautiful Chrismon ornaments for Floyd United Methodist Church annual Chrismon tree.  Jean was also a gifted artist. She painted countless, beautiful items that now decorate the homes of her children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the Floyd United Methodist Church with Rev. Clarence Dishman officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Charlie David Rakes


Charlie David Rakes, age 79, went to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.  Charlie is the son of Harry Cleveland and Geneva Joy Rakes, deceased.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Ella May Kast Rakes; brothers, Lloyd Alfred, Oscar Otis, Albert Reed, and Ray (Tom) Everette; and sisters, Bonny Coy Rakes, Nellie Ree Hooker, Alma (Eunice) Bowman and Nancy Lula Rakes.

He is survived by sisters, Margie Ruth Gier, Ruby Joyce Keith (Eugene); daughter, Yolonda Sue Burrier (Randy); sons, Charles Darin Rakes and Charles Duston Leon Rakes; grandchildren, Lindsey Acuff Woolwine (Brandan), Cody Michael Burrier, Darianna Dawn Rakes, and Charles Darin Rakes, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Cymric Faith Woolwine, Jace Harding Woolwine, and Ian Decker Woolwine.

His years of helping others in his journey through life found him making stops at VDOT, Southern States, the Radford Arsenal, NAPA in Christiansburg, Virginia Tech, and countless farms and homes throughout the area.  Everyone that knew Charlie well, and even those who didn't, know of his love of making music and dancing.  Charlie never met a stranger he didn't know.

Friends and relatives of Charlie's are invited to gather at Maberry Funeral Home to celebrate his life from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2019.

Charles William Way


Charles William Way, 85 of Riner, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Hayes and Bessie Jones Way; brother, Bobby T. Way; and sister, Betty Jean Bailey.

He is survived by his brother, Daniel Way; sisters, Mary Gunter, Dolly Barlow and Phyllis Baker.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at New Hope Church of God with Pastor Mike Bond, Pastor Dwayne Martin and Pastor Leon Alley officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery with Military Rites by the Army National Guard.  The family will receive friends from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
