Mildred Lester Memitt

Mildred Lester Memitt, 83 of Riner, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, William I. Memitt; parents, James & Zell Lester; granddaughter, Jennifer Memitt; brothers, Jimmy Lester, Curtis Lester, and Benny Lester; and sisters, Audrey Underwood and Ann Morgan.

She is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Bill & Sandra Memitt, Ralph & Vickie Memitt, and Ted & Pamela Memitt; grandsons, Eric Martin, Matt and Colby Memitt, and Daniel Memitt; granddaughters, Skyler Quesinberry, Jessica, Ashlee, Tiffany, Maegen and Abigail Memitt; great-grandchildren, Tristen Bond, Briana Martin, Sheila Memitt, Levi Sutphin, Mason Caldwell, and Willow Quesinberry; brother & sister-in-law, Ronnie & Betty Lester; sisters & brothers-in-law, Barbara & Kenneth Kenley, Janice & Claude Miles, Iris & Dean Sowers, and Joyce & Lloyd Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at Noon on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Fellowship Baptist Church, Riner, VA with Pastor James Bradley and Pastor Russell Gordon officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Cemetery on Broad Shoals Road. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel.

Irvin Hampton Waldron

Irvin Hampton Waldron, 95 of Copper Hill, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 10, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Betty K. Waldron.

He was a World War II Veteran and was the owner and operator of Mountain Ditching Corp. for many years.

He is survived by his children, Glenn (Joyce) Waldron, Alice Waldron, and Mark (Donna) Waldron; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Dewey Cleveland Waldron; and sisters & brother-in-law, Carnell Poe and Jill & Tommy Jones.

Funeral service will be held at Noon on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Mount Union Church of the Brethren with Pastor Greg Fleshman and Pastor Gary Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Kefauver Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the church. Donald (Don) James Weeks, Sr.

Donald (Don) James Weeks, Sr., 88 of Willis, passed away on Thursday, March 07, 2019 after a short battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Lura Altizer Weeks; twin brother, Douglas Weeks; sister, Louise Barger; and son, Aubrey Dalton.

He was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa. He worked many years for the Floyd County School System and retired from Hollingsworth & Vose after 15 years.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years, Melva Dalton Weeks; son & daughter-in-law, Donald (Donnie), Jr. & Candace Weeks of Shawsville; daughters & son-in-law, Linda Dalton of Woodlawn, and Darlene & Joe Phillips of Willis; grandchildren, Tyler Weeks, Derek Blevins, Caleb Blevins, Greg Williams, Anita Williams, Rocky Dalton, Rodney Dalton, April Gardner, and Joey Phillips; eight great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ralph Barger; and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Kindred at Home and New Century Hospice.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Greasy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the funeral home.

David Lewis Gardner

David Lewis Gardner, 75 of Floyd, passed away in his home on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents, Guy & Martha Gardner; and brother, Kenneth Gardner.

David loved the Lord and lived a Christian life. He loved his church family at Topeco Church of the Brethren and was an active member.

He was always a farmer at heart. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Education in 1965 and his Master’s Degree in Vocational Education in 1971, both from Virginia Tech. He retired as the Unit Coordinator and Extension Agent for the Virginia Cooperative Extension in Floyd County in 2002.

David is survived by numerous cousins, church family, and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Mike Varner and Brother Ted Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Katie Mae Stuart

Katie Mae Stuart, 90 of Copper Hill, went Home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 4, 2019 in Garner, North Carolina. She was born on January 9, 1929 to the late Lewis Jacob and Sophia Banks Stuart. She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Matthew A. Stuart who passed away on December 7, 1994; two sons, Paul A. Stuart and Mark A. Stuart (infant); ten brothers; and two sisters, including her beloved sister, Irma Jean Walker Hanson.

She enjoyed trying new recipes, reading, and gardening. She will be remembered for her sense of humor. She attended Harris-Hart School.

Katie joined Little River Missionary Baptist Church at age 13, a church family which she loved, serving in many capacities including Senior Choir, Board of Trustees, Treasurer of the Building Fund, and the Willing Workers Club. She often referred to Little River Missionary as “the bridge that brought her over.” She remained an active member until her health no longer permitted and relocated to North Carolina with her daughter and son-in-law.

She leaves behind a devoted daughter, Jill Stuart Hill (Andrew, Jr.) of Garner, NC; three grandchildren, Kevin L. Stuart of Roanoke, Andrew J. Hill, III of Durham, NC, and Brittany R. Hill of Charlotte, NC; great-grandson, Kevin, Jr. of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Annie Mae Stuart of Washington, D.C.; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2019 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Clinton Crump officiating. Interment will be held in the Stuart Family Cemetery with repass to follow at Little River Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
