Arnold Lee "Zeke" Duncan



Arnold Lee “Zeke” Duncan, 79 of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Vera Saw & Martha Radford; and brothers, Wesley Duncan & Fred “Chubby” Duncan.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce M. Duncan; daughter & son-in-law, Bonnie & Buddy Atkinson; granddaughter,  Becky Scott & husband David; sisters & brothers-in-law, Hazel Smallwood, Joyce & Garfield Underwood, Peggy Duncan, Verna June & Tom Pringle; brothers & sisters-in-law, John & Agnes Duncan, Kenneth & Anne Duncan, Curtis & Lillian Duncan; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Ihrig and Pastor Perry Lundy officiating. Interment will follow in the Rakes Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the funeral home.

Gertrude Childress Page


Gertrude Childress Page, 93 of Floyd, entered into her Eternal Life surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. She is preceded in death by her husband, Vivian W. Page; parents, Robert & Louise Owens Childress; infant son, Larry; daughter, Carolyn Boyd; five sisters; three brothers; and sons-in-law, Bobby Boyd and Pastor Robert Blackwell.



Mrs. Page was a longtime member of New Haven Baptist Church of Floyd and Tuggles Gap Baptist Church of Floyd. She made the best fried apple pies in the world. She loved and was loved by all who knew her.



She is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Vernon W. & Nancy Page, Teddy R. & Connie Page, Michael L. Page; daughters & sons-in-law, Patricia Blackwell, Brenda P. & Retired Judge John Apostolou, Deborah P. & Michael Agee, Connie P. & Bruce Shaw; grandchildren, Joe Blackwell, Kim Shively, Michelle Hanson,

Dr. Kelly Werder, Nicole Ray, Jay Wilmer, Amanda Elyard, Tessie Martin, Abe Agee, Kati Agee, Patrick Shaw, Elizabeth Sheets, Kinsey Page, Ethan Page; 16 great-grandchildren; special friends, Rose McDaniel, Joyce Reed, and Ralph Beran; and a large family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.



Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Tuggles Gap Baptist Church with Pastor Patrick Shaw and Pastor Michael Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2014 at Maberry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to benefit grandson, Patrick Shaw’s medical fund, c/o Joe Blackwell, P.O. Box 384, Floyd, VA 24091.


The family would like to extend a special thank you to Debbie Davis, Marie Lester, Becky Mengelt, and the rest of the staff at Human Touch Home Health, as well as Intrepid Hospice Services.

Gary Scott Hale


Gary Scott Hale, 54 of Floyd, went to join the Angels, on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Debra Weddle Hale; son, Randall Lee Hale; parents, Warren G. and Pauline Lawrence Hale; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra Hale Shank and Gerry, Carol Hale Ellis and Benny; nieces, Melissa Shank, Jennifer Shank, Angie Ellis, Amber Hardman; and great-nephew, Cory Hughes. Gary will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, and brother. He fought a brave and courageous battle during his illness. Rest in peace our precious angel.  A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Alan Terry and Pastor Marty Moyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Rd.; Suite 106, Roanoke, VA 24018, or to the Hospice group of our choice.

Betty Rose Spangler



Betty Rose Spangler, 77 of Floyd, formerly of Shawsville, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Spangler; infant child, Robert Jackson (Jackie) Jr.; parents, Eli and Rosanah Rose; sisters, Edith Coleman and Minervia Kell; and brother-in-law, William Kell.

Betty was born on August 11, 1936 in the coalfields of Eckman, West Virginia and made her home with her husband of 50 years in Shawsville, Virginia.  She was very proud of her many years as a security guard at Hills Department Store in Christiansburg before caring for her beloved patients at English Meadows Retirement Home later in life.  Betty made the most of her final year of life at Skyline Nursing and Rehab Center where she made many friends and became a passionate Bingo player.  She loved people and was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and friend.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Katie and Terry Slusher, Kenny and Tracy Spangler; grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Thornhill, Ashley and Tony Kendrick, and Katherine Spangler; great-grandchildren, Kalie, Haley and Justin Dakota Thornhill, and Maddyson Kendrick; sisters, Patricia Hall, Ruth Neece, and Susie Stamper; brothers, John Rose, Ralph Rose, Daniel Rose and David Rose; special friend and caretaker, Angela Jones. 

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Tim McGrady officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the funeral home prior to the service.
