Zelma Mae Thompson Spence



Zelma Mae Thompson Spence, 83 of Floyd, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley & Matte Clarice Moles Thompson; husband, John Paul Spence; and son, Gary Paul Spence.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons & daughter-in-law, Dwight D. Spence, Robert W. & Melissa W. Spence; daughters & sons-in-law, Velva S. & Garry Lineback, Reva Kay & Bobby Pack; sister, Nellie Thompson; brother, Marvin Thompson; grandchildren, Joshua Spence, Isaac Spence, Jeremiah Spence, Stevie Bowman, Jennifer Lineback, Amanda Bertelsen, Jake Altizer, Jonathan Spence; great-grandchildren, Kiley Bowman, Chloe Spence, Corben Spence, Natalee Spence, Thomas Bowman, Olivia Spence and Lukas Bertelsen; special cat, Little One.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday July 9, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bobbie Henley and Rev. Emory Tarpley officiating.  Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday July 8, 2014 at the funeral home.

Max Earl Sweeney

Max Earl Sweeney, 81, of Floyd, passed away Thursday July 3, 2014. Max was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in the Korean War. He is survived by his loving wife; Shirley Sweeney, sons; David, Randy and Darrell Sweeney, grandchildren; Mikayla Sweeney, Rhiannon Leebrick, Sarah Newton, Aaron Sweeney and Liam Sweeney, great grandchildren; Maebel Johnson and Wyatt Newton, sisters; Daphine Sowers and Cindy Eanes, brothers; Bruce, Barry and Doug Sweeney. Max had countless friends and loved ones in the local music community. The family would like to thank the doctors and all the staff at Springtree Health and Rehab Center for their excellent care. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 6, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Doug Sweeney officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery with Military Rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. The family will receive friends from noon to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Joanne Francis Buckner


Joanne Francis Buckner, 73, of Pulaski, passed away Thursday July 3, 2014. She is survived by a daughter; Trudy Crowe, grandchildren; Matthew, Kristi and Larry Crowe, and Shaina Via, great grandchildren; Dustin Browning, Emily, Abby and Alxis Crowe, and Ethan Lawson. There will be no visitation or services.

Charidy Lee Anders


Charidy Lee Anders, 70 of Willis, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Charidy was a loving wife, mother and doting grandmother and friend to all. She was a truly fine person and the flowers are a tribute to her hard work in the gardens at the Jacksonville Center. In addition to her work with the flowers she worked in housekeeping and helped coordinate special events.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband; Jimmie Frank Anders, Sr., sons & daughters-in-law; Jimmie Frank & Marlyn Anders, Martin Lee & Ruth Ann Anders, daughter & son-in-law; Sherrie Lynn & Richard Mager, grandchildren; Michael Lee Anders, Ronnie Wayne Keith, Jr., Jimmie Frank Anders, III, James Richard Frederick Mager, Gaylin Robert Mager, Ian Nathanel Anders, Charles Jacob Anders, Mason Robert lee Anders, great-grandchildren; Hunter Lee Anders, Michael Lee Anders, Jr. Laykin Chelsi Ann Anders, nephews; Dylan Alan Anders & Cody Alan Anders.

A Celebration of Life will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday July 7, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Frank Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Charles B. Spangler, Jr.




Charles B. Spangler, Jr., 85 of Floyd, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday July 1, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents; Charles B. Spangler Sr. and Mary Y. Spangler. Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years; Barbara Thomas Spangler, daughter and son-in-law; Sara S. Dulaney and Glenn, brother and sister-in-law; M. Jack and Bessie Spangler, sister; Marie Spangler; special nephew; Richard W. Thomas Jr. and wife Sheila and children, brother’s-in-law; Rodney C. Thomas and Richard W. Thomas Sr. and wife Carolyn, numerous nieces and nephews. Charles retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company and was a life time member of the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department. Charles was a Charter member of the Floyd Rescue Squad. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Floyd for 58 years where he served as Elder and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of The American Legion Post # 127 and Honor Guard and served as Commander for 3 years. He served as President of Board of Directors at Great Oaks Country Club. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Charles enjoyed music, traveling, woodworking and making musical instruments. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday July 3, 2014 at The Presbyterian Church of Floyd with Rev. Tupper Garden officiating. Interment to follow at Jacksonville cemetery with Military Rites by the Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post # 127. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday July 2, 2014 at Maberry Funeral Home.
