Bobbie Jean Poff Martin

Bobbie Jean Poff Martin, aged 89, of Floyd, peacefully passed away and joined her heavenly home on Thursday, September 7, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Beulah and Ewell Poff; as well as her infant brother. Bobbie was born in Willis, Virginia, on October 21, 1933. She had been a devoted member of the Topeco Church of the Brethren for over 50 years, actively participating as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, and serving on various committees. Her last role within the church was as the President of the Topeco Women's Club.

In 1950, she proudly graduated from Willis High School, where she played as a starting forward for the Willis Eagles. Bobbie later worked at Skyline Sportswear until its closure in 1985, after which she began a 25-year career at Walmart until her retirement. Following retirement, she devoted her time to assisting at Maberry Funeral Home. Amidst her work commitments, Bobbie consistently supported her children in all their endeavors, including the FCHS band and various sporting events. She played a pivotal role in establishing the Floyd County Booster Club, where she served as President. After her children graduated, she enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to support her grandchildren in their school activities and volunteered at their school.

For over two decades, Bobbie was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge, serving as both treasurer and President of the Association. Even after her tenure as President, she continued to be involved in the Lodge and was honored with the highest recognition during a pinning ceremony, with the assistance of her grandchildren.

Bobbie is survived by her beloved family, whom she cherished above all else. She leaves behind her daughter, Deborah Snellings of Floyd; and her son, Ervin Martin of Alexandria. Her legacy continues through her two grandchildren, Brandon (Krystal) Snellings of Richmond and Erika Snellings (Alyssa Castillo) of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Bobbie's great-grandchildren, Carson Snellings, Madelyn Snellings, and Olivia Snellings, all from Richmond, were a source of immense joy in her life. She shared a special bond with two close friends, Jo Ann Maberry, with whom she attended Lodge meetings and various children's activities - some even mistook them for sisters, and her cousin friend, Freeda "Pete" Harris, with whom she conversed two or three times daily. Additionally, she was a cherished member of the Harris/Poff family, receiving unwavering support from several nieces and nephews during her final days at home.

Marie Spangler

On September 2, 2023, Marie Spangler passed away peacefully at age 90 after a brief illness.

Marie was born, raised and had many wonderful memories of growing up with her family in Floyd Virginia.  She was born to her parents, Mary Catherine and Charles Spangler.  She was the youngest of three siblings, her brothers being Charles Jr. and Jack (Murray Jackson).

After graduating High School in 1951, at the age of 18, she moved to Washington DC to work for the FBI.  Five years later she moved to the Naval Research Laboratory where she worked thirty six additional years before retiring in 1992.

In 1963, Marie gave birth to her only son Ralph.  She raised him in a home filled with love and he is grateful that she was able to spend the last several years living with him and his wife, Julie in their home. Marie was a life-long crafter who enjoyed all forms of sewing, crochet, quilting and needlepoint.  After retiring she became a doll maker, producing dozens, perhaps hundreds, of hand-made porcelain dolls.  She was very proud of the fact that her dolls (or babies as she called them) began as mud and that she had a hand in almost every aspect of bringing them to 'life' - from pouring to firing, painting and finally creating custom outfits for each of them.  In her later years she also became a prolific quilter and was working on one the week before she passed.

Marie is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mary Cathrine (Yopp) Spangler; her brothers, Charles Jr., and Jack and his wife, Bessie.

Marie is survived by her son, Ralph Roland, his wife Julie Petrbok; and her sister-in-law Barbara Spangler.  She was also extremely close with all of her nieces and nephews, Sara Dulaney, Gary and Julianne Spangler, Janet Branch, Karen Black and David and Lydean Spangler.  There was a special place in her heart for all of their children and grand- children as well.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bob McLavey officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Floyd County Humane Society, P.O. Box 862, Floyd, VA 24091.

They would go on to share 72 years of marriage together that truly exemplified selfless, unending love. Her pride and joy was her family, and she enjoyed raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and countless others who may not have been related by blood, but were always welcomed in all the same. Patsy worked for most of her adult life at the garment factory in Floyd until her retirement in 1998. She served her church through activities such as Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, singing groups, and Christmas plays. She was an excellent piano player and in addition to time spent teaching and playing for family at home, she played at Tuggles Gap and Duncan’s Chapel Church during services for many years. She was very talented at crocheting, knitting, and quilting and was a fantastic seamstress. She enjoyed gardening and canning to provide for her family and whomever she could share with as well. She loved to read and kept a detailed library of important events of friends, family, and the community. As she aged and dementia and arthritis kept her from continuing the things she once loved, she still enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and doing word searches. Along with her husband Welby, she cared deeply for her friends, family, and neighbors and was always willing to offer a helping hand in any way she could, often putting others' needs before her own. Kind-hearted and forgiving, Patsy lived by and exemplified the saying, “Let your love be stronger than your pain”. A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Patsy will be deeply missed by all who knew her and her love, light, and all the important lessons that she shared will be cherished and carried with us always.
