Loveline McGrady

 

Loveline McGrady, 82 of Indian Valley, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Columbus McGrady; parents, Howard & Gay Smith; and brother, Wayne Smith.

She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Carolyn & George Stein and Lois & William Dooley; grandchildren, Andrew (Katie) Passarelli and Jeremy Dooley; great-grandson, Caleb Passarelli; sisters, Wanda Phillips and Brenda Poff; several nieces and nephews; and many cherished neighbors and friends.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff at Skyline Nursing & Rehab for their kindness and compassionate care of our mom during her last few years.

Neva Trail Ratliff

 

Neva Trail Ratliff, 102 of Floyd, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020. She was born March 16, 1918 to William Harvey and Laura Turner Trail.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Worthland Ratliff; as well as 14 siblings: Odessa, Irma, Dorothy, Chester, Elsie, Anna, Eldridge, Izola, Virgil, Pauleda, Waneda, Marvin, Cluber, and Verna.

Surviving are sister-in-law, Marie Trail of Floyd; brother-in-law, Rev. Brown Radford of Daleville; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Jacksonville Cemetery with Rev. Murray Agee and Rev. Bill Schoenman officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the cemetery. Those wishing to pay their respects may also do so on Friday, September 4, 2020 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home.

Harvie Harrison Reed

 

Harvie Harrison Reed, 70 of Floyd, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2020, to his Eternal Home after a long battle with cancer.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Hubert H. & Velma W. Reed; brothers, Walter, Donald, and Major Reed; and a sister, Ines Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Amy K. Reed; his pride and joy son, Hubert Harrison Reed; brother, Denton Reed; sisters, Glada Luckadoo and Barbara (Dallas) Farmer; several nieces and nephews; a very special grand-dog, Daisy and two other fur babies Chip and Festus whom he loved all dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2020 at the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Pastor Dewayne Trout, Pastor Brian Turpin, and Pastor Dan Whitlock officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Helen Marie Dickerson Howell

 

Helen Marie Dickerson Howell, 89 of Floyd, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Otis Howell and Edward Epperly; parents, Albert & Gladys Dickerson; siblings, Wayne, Albert Junior, Howard, Jim, and Lucille; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Amber Marshall.

She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Sandra & Calvin Shortt and Elizabeth & Terry Thompson; grandchildren, John Shortt, Paul Shortt (Perry), Jennifer Marshall (Dale), and Judy Bennett (Jeff); great-granchildren, Colton, Ava, Michael, Evan, and Ruby; and brothers, Russell Dickerson and Roger Dickerson.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sepetember 3, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Hudgins officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann Nece

It is with profound sadness, we announce Shirley Ann Nece, age 82, gained her wings and entered Heaven’s gates to be with her Heavenly family on August 19, 2020.

She is survived by one daughter, Stacey K. Duke and her husband Robert, of San Antonio, TX.

She was born to the late H.P. and Margaret Jennings, April 16, 1938, in Marion, Virginia. Shirley grew up in Floyd, Virginia and graduated from Floyd High School in 1956. In 1960 she received a degree in Education from Radford College, focused in Health and Physical Education. In 1998, she came to San Antonio where she worked at SeaWorld for twenty years and enjoyed speaking with guests from around the country. Shirley enjoyed reading, crocheting and needlepoint. She loved to watch University of Alabama college football and San Antonio Spurs Basketball.

Shirley was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured and embraced every moment with her family. She especially loved and treasured her role as Nana to Damian, Devin, and Desmond. She was an active lady and enjoyed watching her grandsons in swimming and karate competitions.

Shirley will be laid to rest next to her mother in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg, Virginia, at 11:00a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2020.

Frances Dulaney Grim

 

Frances Dulaney Grim, 90 of Floyd, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kermit L. Grim; parents, Fred W. & Thalia Horton Dulaney; brother, Bill Dulaney; and son-in-law, Bruce Mannon.

She is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Andy L. & Gay Grim, Mark L. & Myra Grim; daughter & son-in-law, Anita & Charlie Smith; grandchildren, Amy Grim, Beth Grim, Aaron (Kim) Grim, Sarah (Aaron) Scyphers, Matthew (Vashti) Grim, Daniel (Morgan) Grim, Eli (Amber) Mannon, Adria (Bill) Dillon, Ethan (Bethany) Mannon; great-grandchildren, Dakota Cain, Jocelyn DeHart, Jake and Daylie Umbarger, Brandy, Peyton, and Kaine Grim, Isaac and Hannah Scyphers, Evelyn, Lewis, Ruth, Virginia, Gloria, Rochelle, Rylah, Charis, and Avery Grim, Lydia Mannon, Eva and Violet Dillon, and Ander Mannon; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Shirley Dulaney.

Funeral Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Topeco Church of the Brethren with Pastor Ted Turner, Pastor Matthew Grim and Pastor Mike Varner officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 – 5 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Weather permitting, services will be held outside the church, so the family requests that you bring your own chair.

Fenton Darrah Quesenberry

 

Fenton Darrah Quesenberry, 93 of Indian Valley, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020.

He was born in Coalwood, WVA. He was the oldest of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Custer and Stella Quesenberry; brother, Glennis Quesenberry; sisters, Maxine Jones, Paulita Quesenberry; beloved grandson, Tracy Darrah Bunn.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty Marshall Quesenberry; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne Holder and Donnie; special grandson, Brandon (Amber) Bunn; great grandson (his pride of joy), Levi Austin Bunn; great granddaughter, Jansen Darrah Bunn; special brother and wife, Chester (Janet) Quesenberry; sisters, Deloris Mills, Verta Owens, Vera Maude Quesenberry, Sandra (Ronnie) Holder, Dorcas (Myron) Sprinkle, several nieces and nephews.

Fenton was a member of the V.F.W. and was proud to have served his country in the US Army. He accepted Christ in 1947 and joined the Mitchell Chapel P.H. Church where he served as trustee, deacon, S.S. Teacher and Men’s Fellowship Leader. He loved his church and church family. He was happy when he was in the woods cutting timber and at the sawmill where he was a sawyer for many years.

Robert Judson Goddard

Robert Judson Goddard, 83 of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on August 16, 2020.  He was surrounded by his loving family who adored him.

He was born on April 4, 1937 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Helen Agnes Duffey and John Goddard.  

He was preceded by his beloved wife, Grace; his daughter, Arlene; and his mother and father. 

Robert (Pop pop) was a proud grandfather and loved all his grandchildren.  He worked many years as a painter and spent his later years living at the Pine Ridge apartments in Floyd where he made many friends. 

He is survived by his brother, Raymond; sisters, Carole and Helen; daughters, Kathleen, Charlene, Marcy, Carole, and Cathy; his sons, Michael, Henry, and Bobby; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. His granddaughter, Jennifer Hollandsworth (Scott), was a special granddaughter who spent her Saturdays taking him shopping and helping him with anything he needed. Ryan Maaser (Jessica) was so special to him he loved him dearly and thought of him like a son. Malinda Peters was his granddaughter who he loved dearly and who helped take care of him.  

Special thank you to Skyline Nursing and Rehab for taking such good care of our Pops they called him Pop pop and took care of him as if he was their own and he loved them very much. 

Dallas Leon Hubbard, Sr.

 

Dallas Leon Hubbard, Sr, 79, of Floyd, passed away on Saturday, August 15 after a lengthy series of illnesses. Dallas was born on April 2, 1941, and was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Ruby Hubbard; a grandson, Enoch Hubbard; and nephews, Scott and Lyndon Hylton; as well as special dogs, Prissy, Oreo and Cookie.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Margaret Harman Hubbard; sons, Dallas “Leon” Hubbard, Jr. (Annette) and Terry Harman Hubbard (Mariellen); and grandchildren, Jamie, Kyle, Caleb, Bethany, Ryan and Quinn Hubbard, who were his pride and joy; sister, Darlene Hylton; niece, Trina H. Minter (Steve); great-niece, Meredith; and numerous other great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dallas graduated from Willis High School in 1959 and began working in his father’s lumber company. Together they formed Hubbard Lumber Corporation. In 1991 he retired from working with timber and returned to his first love, which was farming and working with cattle.

He was a longtime member of Topeco Church of the Brethren having joined at age 14. He was a member/chairman of several committees. He was selected to be a deacon and served in that capacity until his illness prevented it. He enjoyed being the church “Candy Man.”

He was noted for his dry sense of humor, his love of laughter, and his generosity. When he heard of a need he was always willing to help. He had a heart for young people, and employed, mentored or otherwise encouraged several over the years who became like additional children or grandchildren to him.

Due to the current virus threat the family will be holding a private graveside service with Rev. Ted Turner and Rev. Mike Varner officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Topeco Church of the Brethren, Camp Bethel (Fincastle, VA) or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The family would like to thank all the caregivers who helped out over the past several years.

Richard "Rick" Dale Weeks

 

Richard “Rick” Dale Weeks, 65 of Floyd, passed away on Monday, August 11, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cline & Eula Weeks; brother, Gary “Charcoal” Weeks; and brother-in-law, Harden Davis.

He is survived by his daughter, Kelli Chaffin and husband Gary; grandson, Braden Chaffin; granddaughter, Emma Chaffin; brothers and sister, Roger Weeks & wife Diana, Linda Weeks Davis, and Larry Weeks and wife Janice; three nieces and three nephews; and special friend, Frank Keith.

A private graveside service will be held in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Mack Darrell Montgomery, Sr.

 

Mack Darrell Montgomery, Sr., 58 of Willis, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Calvin & Goldie Montgomery; and sister, Arlene M. Collins.

He is survived by his wife, Sheree Montgomery; children, Matthew Montgomery & wife Erin Yearout-Patton, AshleyLachell Young, Mack Montgomery, Jr., and Arlene Montgomery; grandson, Malachi Montgomery; brother & sister-in-law, Colen “Monte” & Alice Montgomery; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Dalton officiating.

Annie Belle Hale Goad Slaughter

Annie Belle Hale Goad Slaughter, 82 of Floyd, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 5, 2020.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Billy Goad and Waitman Slaughter; parents, Carlis Cebert & Algie Annie Conner Hale; son, Larry Goad; sister, Ollie Mae Trail; and brother, Ralph Hale.

Ann lived her life loving and caring for her four sons and living a Christ-like example before her family. She had many friends from her 34 years at Floyd Garment and 15 years at Skyline Nursing & Rehab. She was a friend to all and showed her Christian love to those she met.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Goad (Audrey), Ricky Goad (Kim), and William Goad (Connie); grandchildren, Frances Dalton (Vernon), Julie Winkey (Shannon), Shawn Shearing (Jodie), Dustin Shearing, Brianna Goad (Austin), and Jayden Goad; great-grandchildren, Emma, Lydia, Dawson, Zaine, and Elias; brothers, Edgar Hale (Vannie Sue), Carlis Hale, Larry Wayne Hale (Brenda); sister-in-law, Effie Montgomery (Cecil); several nieces & nephews; step-children, Lonnie Slaughter (Joyce), and Judy Young (Leon).

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Charlie Spencer and Brother Mark Spencer officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurel Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Ina Christine Martin

Ina Christine Martin, 80 of Floyd, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Covy Melvin and Elverna Mamie Harris Sowers; sister, Melva Stuphin.

She is survived by her husband, Owen Roscoe Martin; daughters and son-in-law; Ina Whitlock (Roy), Patsy Martin; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Martin (Brenda); brother, Roy Sowers; grandchildren, Jerry Whitlock, Tabitha Whitlock (Chris), Gina Turner, Shane Martin, Owen Martin, Wayne Martin; great grandchildren, Tegan Alexis Whitlock, Blandeon Dean, Juliet Grace Vest, Desiree Whitlock, Cheyenne Whitlock, C.J. Whitlock, Alayna Martin, Zayden Martin.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wesley Conner officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Donald H. Semones

Donald H. Semones, 84 of Salem and formerly of Floyd County, went to be with his wife after a hard fought battle with several chronic illnesses on the morning of July 16, 2020.

Don served his country during the Korean War in the Navy and got to travel the world. He came home, met the love of his life and was married on February 15, 1958.

Don is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Hallie; one daughter, Kathy Dawn; and his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Left to mourn his loss are daughters, Vicki Mabery and Kathy M. (George) Bell, of Salem; one grandson, Jake (Maria) Mabery; and one brother, Curtis Semones.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020 in the Topeco Cemetery with Pastor Howard Nester officiating.

Mary Spence Turman

Mary Spence Turman, 78 of Riner, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jacob Fred & Wetah Snow Spence; siblings, Charles Benny Spence and Lula Mae Boyd; and nephew, Ricky Spence.

She is survived by her husband, Walter J. Turman; sons, Kenneth Turman and Donnie Turman; grandchildren, Josh Graham, Jacob Turman, Kendra Turman, and Justin Turman; great-grandchildren, Preston, Maddie, Hunter, and Caleb; sister & brother-in-law, Martha & Charles “Billy” Altizer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ted Farmer officiating. Interment will follow in the Willis Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serafina Mackian

Serafina Mackian, 83, died on Thursday, July 2, 2020 in Floyd, Virginia. Born in Bosnia on September 7, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Rose & Ivan Kajic. She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 10 years, Gerald “Paddy” Mackian. 

She is survived by one son, Tony Mackian; three daughters, Eli Velickovic & husband Bora, Bozana Young & husband Robert, and Emily Pucelj; seven grandchildren, Ivan and Sergio Velickovic, Milan and Adriana Pucelj, Samuel and Sara Mackian, and Alessandra Young; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by former son-in-law, Edvard Pucelj and former daughter-in-law, Cheryl Mackian.

Serafina established her faith early on in life. She held her faith dear to her heart and passed down through the generations, to her children and grandchildren. She was known for supporting her family through prayer. Her children say her firm Catholic beliefs helped shape them into the people they are today. When asked to describe Serafina, her children said she was the definition of strength, a constant in this ever changing world. 

She has always provided comfort in times of need. Regardless of what was going on around them, she played her role as mother. Her children say they always had her providing them love and security in time of need.

Serafina spent most of her life living in Eastern Europe providing for her family. She moved to America when she was 49. On top of being a loving mother,she was the kindest grandmother. Her grandchildren say they will miss her Serbian mac and cheese and her famous bread.  Those who were closest to her, refer to her as “Baba,” Serbian for grandmother.

Serbian was Serafina’s predominant language, as she spoke very little English. Her family says for a woman who didn’t speak English, she made America feel like home. Her caring nature and passionate heart will be truly missed. The family she leaves behind says she brought out the goodness in the world and gave them strength to face difficult situations and overcome them. 

A private graveside service consisting of family will be held in the Jacksonville Cemetery.

Serafina will truly be missed, but her family is glad she is finally at peace in the arms of her loving Savior.

Warren Taylor Williams

Warren Taylor Williams, 67 of Galax, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie & Estelle Williams.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Diane Williams; son & daughter-in-law, Brad & April Williams; daughter & son-in-law, Karla & Wesley Smith; grandchildren, Austin & Matthew Williams, and Kylie & Seth Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at the St. Matthews Cemetery with Rev. Randy Key officiating.

Nelderee Reynolds

Nelderee Reynolds, 78 of Willis, passed away on July 2, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Bud & Tillie Moles Spence. She is also preceded in death by her husband, James Reynolds; sister, Belva George; and brothers, Milton, Allen, Maurice, Naven, Trenton, and Nelson Spence. 

She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Lorie & John Bolt, Penny & Michael Bolt; grandsons, Andrew, Dereck, and Matthew Bolt; great-granddaughter, Alice Bolt; step great-granddaughter, Klair Davis; sister, Corina Dougill; step-grandson and family, Mickey (Marcia) Bolt and Sierra, Samantha, and Adam; and her special family, DJ, Heather, Avery, Emery, and Marly Chaffin.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jeff Dalton officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lou Alice Howell Baker

Lou Alice Howell Baker, 83 of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2020. She was born May 17, 1937 to the late Calvin Asa & Eliza Alice Burges Howell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Edgar Baker.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Winona Baker; Darryl and Lisa Baker; grandchildren, Stacy Lawson and husband Mitch; Andrea Sehen and husband Allen; Colt Baker, Ryan Baker and wife Kelly; great grandchildren, Trent Sehen, Evan Sehen, Tulson Baker; brothers and sisters-in-law; Kurtz Howell, John and Danah Howell, Mary Howell, Becky Howell.

A Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Topeco Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.

LeMan Hope Dobrenz, Jr.

LeMan H. Dobrenz, Jr., 55 of Floyd, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee (LeMan, Sr.) & Ellie Dobrenz. 

LeMan was a friend to many. He devoted many years to his work serving at Ray’s Restaurant and recently with The Bread of Life. 

He is survived by his cousins, Chris Hale, Ginny Hale, Cindy Domenico, and Jason Domenico; as well as numerous other cousins and friends.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2020 in the Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends of LeMan are encouraged to come and share a memory of him.
